लेखक ने बड़ी तहज़ीब से अपने ख़यालों को परोसा है। वे जितनी मोहब्बत से ज़िन्दगी और रिश्तों को लफ़्ज़ों में समेटते हैं, उतनी ही शिद्दत से सिनेमा और समाज पर पड़ रहे एक दूसरे के असर को उकेरते हैं। उनका मानना है की समाज का जो फ़िल्मों पर असर है, उससे उन्हें काफ़ी दिक़्क़त है। आम तौर पर रुझान रहता है की फ़िल्में समाज को बिगाड़ रही हैं पर जावेद साहब के विचार इससे उलट जान पड़ते हैं। वो एक सफ़ल शादी की नींव दोस्ती में देखते हैं, जीने के लिए ख़्वाबों की बेख़ुमारी देखते हैं, कुछ कर गुज़रने के लिए दीवानेपन को ज़रूरी मानते हैं।

एक काफ़ी प्यारा अनुभव था उनके ख़्वाब के गाँव में उतरना।

How beautifully he wove the emotions, social philosophy in these short poems and illustrations! How soulful is the book!
You might have different political ideologies but do read this once. I recommend this book to everybody.

These days its become a trend to published old work into new book with some new work offers nothing new but an opportunity for the author and the publishers to milk the growing interest in the genre. एक छोटी, कलात्मक लेकिन भावनात्मक रूप से गहरी किताब जो शायरी, विचार और तजुर्बे के ज़रिये ज़िंदगी, समाज और सिनेमा पर जावेद साहब की नज़र को बेहद सलीके से सामने रखती है। 

रूप और प्रस्तुति:
तकनीकी रूप से यह पारंपरिक कविता-संग्रह नहीं, बल्कि एक मिनी कॉफी-टेबल बुक है जिसमें छोटे-छोटे अशआर, नज़्मों के अंश, इंटरव्यू की पंक्तियाँ और तजुर्बाती टिप्पणियाँ सुन्दर हिंदी कैलीग्राफी और स्केचों के साथ सजाई गई हैं। फ़ॉन्ट, लेआउट और चित्रकारी किताब को पढ़ने से ज़्यादा देखने और महसूस करने का अनुभव बनाते हैं; कई पाठक इसे “हर पन्ने पर बुकमार्क लगाने का मन करने वाली किताब” बताते हैं, जो इसकी विज़ुअल अपील और कोटेबल लाइनों को अच्छी तरह पकड़ता है।

थीम: ज़िंदगी, समाज और फ़िल्म
जावेद साहब यहाँ महज़ गीतकार या शायर नहीं, बल्कि एक संक्षिप्त-फॉर्म के दार्शनिक की तरह दिखते हैं। किताब में बार-बार लौटने वाले बिंदु हैं – अमीरी–ग़रीबी का फासला, सत्ता-संरचना, रिश्तों में बराबरी, और यह शिकायत कि फ़िल्मों पर समाज के बुरे असर की चर्चा बहुत होती है, पर समाज के पतन का असर सिनेमाई कंटेंट पर कैसे पड़ रहा है, इस पर कम बात होती है।

ज़बान की सादगी, ख़याल की गहराई:
अशआर और पंक्तियाँ बहुत आसान ज़बान में हैं लेकिन उनके भीतर की कड़वाहट और सच्चाई देर तक चुभती रहती है – जैसे: “ऊँची इमारतों से मकान में घिर गया, / कुछ लोग मेरे हिस्से का सूरज भी खा गए”, जो वर्ग-असमानता और स्पेस–छिन जाने की तकलीफ को दो पंक्तियों में पकड़ लेता है। इसी तरह, “क्यों डरें ज़िंदगी में क्या होगा / कुछ न होगा तो तज़ुर्बा होगा” वाली लाइनें इस किताब के मोटिवेशनल, लगभग life-coach टोन की मिसाल हैं, जिनकी वजह से कई पाठक इसे “philosophy of life” वाली किताब कहते हैं।

राजनीतिक–सामाजिक स्वर और ‘कम्युनिस्ट’ झुकाव:
टेक्स्ट में जगह-जगह पर पूँजीवाद, असमानता, और सत्ता-संरचना पर आलोचनात्मक दृष्टि झलकती है; कुछ पाठक साफ़ तौर पर इसे जावेद साहब के “कम्युनिस्ट साइड” का परिचय मानते हैं। यह राजनीतिक स्वर कभी–कभी सीधे नारेबाज़ी की तरफ़ बढ़ता है, पर अधिकतर जगहों पर यह व्यक्तिगत अनुभव और सूक्ष्म टिप्पणियों के ज़रिये आता है, जिससे वह सूखा प्रोपेगेंडा नहीं, बल्कि निजी–सामूहिक चिंता की तरह महसूस होता है।

कमज़ोरियाँ: पुनरावृत्ति और ‘नया’ कितना?
जो पाठक पहले से जावेद अख्तर के इंटरव्यू, टॉक शो और पुराने संग्रह (जैसे तरकश) पढ़ चुके हैं, उन्हें इस किताब में काफी सामग्री “पहले सुनी–पढ़ी” लग सकती है; कुछ रिव्यू इसे साफ़-साफ़ “पुराने काम की री–पैकेजिंग” और बढ़ती लोकप्रियता को भुनाने की कोशिश कहते हैं। किताब बहुत छोटी है, लगभग 45–60 मिनट की रीड; कुछ पाठकों को शेर–ओ–शायरी की मात्रा कम और “विचार / बातें” ज़्यादा लगती हैं, जिससे hardcore poetry lovers के लिए यह थोड़ा पतला अनुभव बन जाता है।

किसके लिए उपयुक्त?
अगर आप जावेद अख्तर को पहली बार पढ़ रहे हैं, तो यह किताब उनकी भाषा, सोच और सामाजिक दृष्टि का बेहतरीन, आसानी से ग्रहण करने योग्य परिचय है – खासकर हिंदी में। पुराने पाठकों के लिए यह “essential new material” से ज़्यादा एक खूबसूरती से डिज़ाइन किया गया सार-संकलन है, जिसे आप shelf पर सजाकर, कभी–कभार खोलकर दो–तीन पन्ने पढ़ेंगे और किसी लाइन पर ठिठकेंगे।

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐✩✩ (3.0/5) — आइडियाज़ और इमेजरी दोनों स्तरों पर खूबसूरत, पर आकार और मौलिकता की सीमाएँ इसे “greatest hits–style” कैलीग्राफी बुक बना देती हैं, न कि एक संपूर्ण नया काव्य-संग्रह।

The volume is more of a mini coffee-table book than a conventional poetry collection, combining couplets, snippets from interviews, and commentaries with elegant Hindi calligraphy and sketches, making it as much a visual and tactile experience as a reading one.

Thematically, Akhtar appears less as just a lyricist and more as a compact-form philosopher, returning repeatedly to class inequality, power structures, gender equality, and the mutual influence of society and cinema. The language is simple but the ideas bite deep, with lines about lost sunlight in crowded cities or turning fear into experience capturing social pain and resilience in just a few words.

A clear left-leaning, anti-capitalist, and egalitarian tone runs through the text, though it usually emerges through personal anecdotes and subtle remarks rather than dry sloganeering, which keeps it humane and relatable. For long-time followers, some material will feel familiar—much of it echoes thoughts from earlier interviews and works—so the book can read like a beautifully packaged “greatest hits” rather than a wholly new collection.

For new readers, however, it offers an accessible introduction to Akhtar’s voice and social vision in Hindi; for old readers, it is a handsome, browsable keepsake to dip into occasionally and pause over a line or two.

We recently moved to a new place, and I made a new friend who was delighted to know about my book collection and reading habit, And as I shared few of my favourites with her as well invited her to take as many from me, she returned the favour by offering me four of her favourites too, the first of which was this one. I must confess that I am not much of a poetry guy, till I picked this one up from Javed Saab, which totally worked for me. This was more of a random rambling from him on today’s situation of our society and world at large in his own unique Hindu / Urdu way. The book was hardly 70 odd pages, with beautiful poetry, illustrations and meaningful ramblings from the legend. His words are seriously magical and have so much depth, at times I had to read the verses multiple times to actually understand them and thanks to the publishing team who have done efforts to offer meanings of some tough Urdu words at the bottom of the page which helped a lot. His thoughts on how a book reader is almost as good as a movie director were outstanding; the way he explains the whole process was like an eye-opener. The imagination of a reader is way better than the imagination or delivery of a director; hence, most of the time we always say that “The book was so much better”. In his own way, he talks about the Copyright Act that he was fighting for with the government and also about RTI and equal rights for all. It was totally terrific, the way he wants us Indians to learn foreign language(s) but promote our own proudly too. Couldn’t believe that this gem of a little book had so much in it.

Picked kindly after 3 months to find this book lying unread and what a book. There is an inherent beauty with proficient writers. They add layers to even normal conversations. This is one such example. Must read.

This is the first poetry book that I've read in hindi and experience was so good. This book is all about the philosophy of life. In this tiny book, the mixture of social, political and cultural emotions are beautifully presented. Explanation of different language and it's beauty is wonderfully written and sketches drawn on each page with calligraphy is the soul of book. Poetry on life is really touched my heart because in this modern and busy world all we need some kind of punch lines that give us energetic vibes and I think that it works for everyone. While reading this one, I imagine the colours of india and that was most special moment with this lovely book. Recommend to everyone to read this super informative book.

This was my first book by Javed Akhtar and a good short read of about 45 minutes, though the poetry in this book is not usual!
This is more on a deep philosophical side highlighting some experiences of Akhtar sahab's life. There are some poems about the life, some on film industry and his point of view and some on deep affections.
Overall, you'll definitely get the punch of reading a renown poet!
