I loved Greyhound (5 stars) and am halfway through Fugue State (3 stars so far). Piper's novels are much better than his poetry as I only gave this book of poetry 2.5 stars. I auditioned it for two of my courses which explore the theme of apocalyptic poetry. The best poems were "During the Apocalypse," "John Wayne," "Switch," and "I Believe I Have an Answer." I also chuckled at the Winona Ryder references in the Instruction Set poems (especially because I teach Heathers in my film class and the ending was all I could think of--not sure if that is what Piper was going for though). "My Weiner Dog" was also funny. Hmm. Now I feel like I should change my rating to 3 stars. Maybe I will. I will definitely use some of the apocalyptic poems in my courses. Overall though, the poems as a whole did not do it for me. I did like how the apocalypse theme came back in the end of the book. I did not like the poetic address in many of the poems ("bro," "shitbird," "all you broke dicks," etc.) as this technique got old real fast and made me feel like Piper was trying too hard to be edgy and cool. Nevertheless, he IS cool without trying in his novels.
