Desire pulses within...

With a strange and powerful type of elemental magick, Claire isn't destined to be a demon's handmaiden. Yet this has been her fate since she was six, when her warlock mother brought her to Eudae. Now an adult, she's about to discover her true power—and how far others are willing to go to take it away.

As part of a Coven mission, Adam Tyrell rescues Claire from her enslavement—and finds himself immediately taken with the beautiful witch. But this charming playboy soon learns that it's easier to steal Claire from demons than win her heart, for her life as a servant has ravaged her spirit. But Adam's determination to protect her from the warlocks who want to harness her magick for evil begins to weaken Claire's resistance—and in the heat of danger they find themselves surrendering to the lure of their deepest desires.

Anya Bast is the author of numerous works of romantic fiction, mostly all paranormal and mostly all scorching hot. She lives in the country with her husband, daughter, eight cats, a dog, and an odd assortment of rescued animals.

She grew up in Minnesota and still favors the colder climates. After high school she moved to the southeast United States where she attended college. While in graduate school she sold her first book and decide to pursue her lifelong dream of writing instead of a career in psychology.

Somewhat reclusive by nature, she can be drawn out with a good bottle of red wine, classic movies, or good music. When she’s not writing, she can be found trying to grow organic vegetables, shopping in thrift stores for that perfect piece of clothing, or dreaming about travel to some faraway country.

She’s hard at work on a brand new series for Berkley Sensation right now, while winding up her national bestselling Elemental Witches quartet.

Boy, it's just not my week. I set aside Witch Heart so I could start on Big Bad Wolf and I guess I got what I deserved. The only thing is, I didn't like Witch Heart a whole lot more than I liked Big Bad Wolf. It's too bad, really. Enough to turn a girl off Paranormal Romance for a while. Kidding!

I knew going into this book that I wasn't reading the first book in the series. I was prepared for missing puzzle pieces and not being able to connect to certain characters in the novel. Unfortunately, that wasn't Witch Heart's biggest weakness. I think my main struggle with this book was that it suffered from the thing that turns most people away from Romance novels: the hero and the heroine go from zero to sixty in as many pages. I hate that. I like the instant attraction storyline--but I don't like it when the main characters hurry into bed together as though the author is chasing them there with a chainsaw. Sexual tension is at its most delicious when there's time for said tension to build. Bast doesn't give us that with Jack and Claire and that's the major flaw in this book.

Let me tell you a little about the plot. In Bast's world, there are witches, warlocks and demons. There's also a demon world. Occasionally, the two worlds intermix, and not with good results. Demons and warlocks are the bad guys. Witches are the good guys--and in Bast's universe, even males are called witches. I admit that tripped me up every time I ran across it. The hero of Witch Heat is Jack. Jack works as the bodyguard (I think) of Thomas, the leader of his coven. In what I assume was a previous book, Thomas was sent into the demon world, where he met our heroine, Claire. Claire's mother dragged her into the demon world when she was five. After Claire's mother died, Claire was never able to return to Earth--so she has lived the last 25 years of her life as handmaiden to the demon Rue. Claire met Thomas and developed a crush on him in the last book (again, I'm assuming) and helped Thomas escape back to Earth. Then, Rue (who had been tampering with her magick for years), forced something called an elium into Claire and shoved her through a portal that left her stranded on Earth.

The witches of Bast's world have powers that are linked to the elements: air, water, fire and earth. Claire is an earth witch, but because of Rue's tampering, she has access to the powers of the other elements. The elium inside of her is also a dangerous source of power. If extracted from Claire's "seat" of power, the elium could be used as a weapon. This makes Claire the target of some power-hungry demons. The main thrust of the plot is twofold: hiding from the demons trying to find Claire and figuring out how to extract the elium from her.

On Earth, Claire seeks the help of the Coven. Thomas, who is now married, brings Jack to rescue Claire. When the two meet, Claire still hasn't gotten over her infatuation with Thomas--but don't worry. A few more pages will take care of that little detail. It'll be forgotten like it was never there. Claire is supposed to be the outsider in the story. She's lived on another plane for most of her life. Her understanding of modern slang and pop culture comes and goes. She's also lived in an emotional vacuum. She lived among demons who did not much care for her and the only demon she thought did (Rue) forced the elium on her and shoved her, alone, through a portal to Earth. Furthermore, Claire's one and only romantic relationship ended in tragedy. So she begins the novel as a cold, closed off character.

It's the hero's job to "warm" Claire up. Jack is a playboy, or he has been since the death of his wife. Though he's slept around a lot since her death, Jack likes to keep it casual. Which is why his attraction to Claire goes unacted upon for about sixty pages. I personally never bought Jack's grief over his wife's death. He seemed like he felt more guilt than grief. She certainly never gets any personality. Jack professes to miss being married, but we never learn a single personal detail of their life together. Does he miss the way she took all the closet space? The fact that she never rinsed the sink after brushing her teeth? I don't know because Jack never tells us. The same goes for Claire's dearly departed ex. They're both faceless, personality-less and therefore, it's hard to buy into either Claire or Jack's grief. Who would miss two such nondescript people?

The other thing that I didn't like about this book was lack of follow-through and consistency. Characters were constantly contradicting each other and themselves. At first Claire doesn't want to endanger anyone. Then she's suggesting that the most expendable witches come with her. First she's in love with Thomas but then she remembers that he's married and, anyway, here's this hot fire witch who'll do just as well. Sometimes it's best if Claire stays away from the Coven. Then they're driving to get to it. Jack doesn't want to sleep with Claire because it'll feel too much like cheating on his wife. Then, in the next scene, they're doing it and all feelings of betrayal vanish in the afterglow.

Then there's the fact that this book is basically made up of three different kinds of scenes:

Claire insisting that she doesn't want to put anyone in danger. Thomas insisting that his wife, Isabelle, would kill him if he didn't save the woman that saved her husband. Jack insisting that he and the other witches can take care of themselves.

Claire and Jack having sex.

Claire and Jack fighting off demons with things like: the ginormous explosion of the elium, Jack's fire magick, the four threads of elemental magick that Claire the Amazing Anomaly can draw on, thanks to Rue's experimentation.

You could say I got tired of it. Especially toward the end of the novel, when Jack and Claire had sex almost every other page. I couldn't wait to finish this book, just so I could be done with it. I don't mind sex in my books. I wouldn't be able to enjoy Kresley Cole or Nalini Singh if I did. But Anya Bast goes way over the top. It's not the quality of what she writes--although I admit to skimming and rolling my eyes--it's how often she inserts love scenes into this book. I felt like Jack and Claire only ever connected on the physical plane, which doesn't give me much hope for their future. Which makes it a good thing, I guess, that I never became attached to either character.

Two things that attracted me to the Goodreads rating system are that (1) you're rating how you feel about a book, not judging its worth (so there might be a very well-written book that you hated and you'd give it one star), and (2) two stars, not three, is the neutral rating: "it was okay," or (as here) what I liked and what I disliked more or less balance out.

I thought the first two chapters made a terrific beginning, told from the main character Claire's point of view as she is thrust into an unfamiliar land called Earth (and specifically Chicago), pursued by demons, misunderstood by humans, and defenseless against both. She emits a telepathic call for help, and from chapter 3 onward her fellow witches come to her aid. They take her under their wing, and the adventure is on.

Refreshingly, several times in the novel Claire points out to her protectors that her magic (annoyingly spelled magick: why?) is stronger than theirs; her only real disadvantage is that she's new to Earth and its ways! Also refreshing, for novels of this genre, is that Claire is quite intelligent and it's the main male character who's often TSTL (too stupid to live).

And I enjoyed the world the author has built. There are 3 kinds of intelligent life forms in this novel: humans, demons, and the human-demon hybrids known as witches and warlocks. The demon realm is a separate dimension called Eudae, shared (or divided?) among four genetically distinct demon breeds; they include the Ytrayi, who are rather cold but follow an ethical code of sorts, and the Atrika, who are warriors and bad guys in every way imaginable. Interestingly, it's very difficult to cross between Eudae and Earth; it's been done, though, and the witches (male and female both!) are one result. Witches are good and have elemental magic, which is nowhere near as strong as demon magic. So there are earth witches, fire witches, water witches, and air witches; witches who turn their magic to evil are called warlocks.

Claire was six years old when her mother, a warlock, took her from Earth to Eudae and perished, whereupon Rue, the lord of the Ytrayi, took the little orphan in and raised her as a kind of pet; he performed experiments on her to supplement her earth magic by installing magic of the other three elements in her, which is what made her magic stronger than any other witch's. Rue himself possessed a strange kind of magic called "elium," so powerful that, if fully released, it could wipe out life on both realms. When the Atrika attacked Rue's palace seeking the elium, Rue transferred it into Claire and shoved her through a portal to Earth; unfortunately two Atrika soldiers named Tevon and Kai slipped through too, and the whole book is about Tevon and Kai trying to capture Claire so that they can use very nasty (mostly fatal) methods to get the elium out of her. It's about that, and sex. Lots and lots of sex.

This, you see, is billed as paranormal romance. Adam is the point man in the team of witches who are trying to protect Claire from Tevon and Kai (whose magic, remember, is vastly stronger than theirs), and sure enough, a romantic bond develops quickly between Adam and Claire, featuring intense sexual encounters; I lost count of how many, but all of them are described in great detail. Never mind the repeated life-or-death situations, or that the demons murder their good friends, whenever there's a moment to breathe, Adam and Claire go at it. There's a distinctly higher quality of writing in the sex scenes, but they felt so unreal in context that I found myself detaching a little from these two very sympathetic characters.

The other big problem is one I have with many other novels that are centered around magic. I miss the clarity of Benedict Jacka's handling of this subject in the Alex Verus series (see Fated). Too often, as here, magic is presented vaguely as a power that exists somehow within a person and, for all the reader knows, might do anything, so there's no telling why it works at one time and fails at another. Tevon and Kai can teleport (but not into a moving vehicle) and can track locations by using human sacrifices (the murdered witches), so why do they pop up here and not there, this time and not that time? It feels too much like author's convenience, and real suspense is replaced by a kind of constant state of dread punctuated by violent attacks. Something, actually, like war for the soldier on the ground.

The world of the demons has been the only home the heroine has ever known. Favored by the leader of a demonic faction, she has a complex relationship with the man who is truly her master and owner. A man who mind raped her for years, changing her DNA and evolving her powers into something beyond recognition. But in a strange way he was like a father to her, a protector and a provider. Now the other faction has risen up and, in a bid, to save a immense power within him, the demon has infused that weapon within her and pushed her through the gateway and back onto her native Earth. Lost and confused in a strange land- homesick for the life she knew and hunted by the enemy who want to kill her and steal the power within her, the heroine fights daily for her life. She's a first met with scorn from the humans who think her a vagrant. She's imprisoned in a psych hospital after talking about demons chasing her. But finally, the elemental witches she's been seeking find her and break her out.

The hero is one of the witches charged with protecting her. A widower whose mask of happiness and playboy personality hides his true grief and guilt from the world, the hero is frightened to be feeling what he starts to feel for the petite woman raised by demons. He desires her yes. Fire and air are very compatible and always seem drawn to one another. But he knows it goes far deeper than that. She's not just a onetime lay. He desires her like he desired his dead wife and that makes his uneasy and skittish around her. Trapped together as they run desperately from safe house to safe house trying to keep one step ahead of the demons chasing her, the hero and heroine neither the less feel compelled to one another and soon she becomes very important to him. But the stress of the chase is weighing heavily on her soul. She was not meant to carry such a powerful weapon despite all the improvements her demon master made to her genetic makeup but she can't remove it without killing herself in the process. And she can't use her magic without serious psychical consequences. And it seems that no matter how hard or far they run, the demons are always one step behind and she's guilt ridden over the deaths they leave in their wake. If only her demon master was alive, he could remove the owner from within her and she could live a normal life with the man she loves. But the faction leader is presumed dead and the heroine doesn't know how much longer she can hold out.

I enjoyed this book. It was fast paced, action packed yet still dedicated a healthy portion to delving into both of the characters pasts and inner workings. The hero-depicted as a fun loving, ladies’ man in the previous books is actually a grieving widow who hides a mountain of sadness behind that smile. The heroine is tormented by how many people are hurt or killed because of her-because of what the demons want is inside of her. And she's lost in a new world alternating between grief over the death of her foster father and at the same time knowing she was slave, a possession and she's finally free now. It wasn't perfect though. I found the plot to be repetitive by the end with the characters finding a safe place for the night, screwing like bunnies and then fighting for their lives when the demons find them again. But overall it was an exciting read with compelling characters and well-developed storyline.

Well, Anya Bast continues building her intricate universe with "Witch Heart", book three in her 'Elemental Witches' series. Bast has made a very successful crossover from smaller erotica publishers to wicked hot mainstream publishing. Her stories still carry the added oomph that's characteristic of her writing background. This series is building to what should be a battle of epic proportions if she keeps it up! With each book, as soon as I begin I'm pulled back into her worlds of daemons and witches and can't stop reading until I run out of pages!

If you've been following this series (and I DON'T suggest you try to pick it up here cause you'll miss a lot), then you already met Claire, the heroine witch of this book, in book two "Witch Blood". Although a human witch, when Claire was six her mother dragged into the daemon world in a bid for power. For twenty-three years Claire has been the 'pet' and experiment of the most powerful of one of the daemon races. When that race is attacked by another, her 'owner' inserts a powerful magical weapon into Claire and then pushes her through a gate to Earth...chased by two warrior daemons! Because of her upbringing, Claire is extremely naive regarding the customs and pleasures of Earth and manages to find herself in trouble pretty quickly.

Adam is a fire witch and a healer who lost his human wife to violence and has never gotten over the guilt of her loss. He's a love-'em-and-leave-'em type who, in a way, uses meaningless sex to overcome his internal pain while on the outside, he's a happy-go-lucky a$$-kicker for the Coven. When he is on the team sent to 'rescue' Claire, he's immediately drawn to her and the more time he spends with her the stronger the pull. Between running from daemons and exposing Claire to all (and I do mean ALL) she's missed so far in her life, he's falling hard and fast, though angrily, in love with her. But the daemons chasing Claire have no intention of leaving Earth without the weapon she carries, and they're perfectly happy...no, ecstatic, to kill her in order to get it.

Another tense run of magic, love, battle, and sex. Bast's pacing keeps you turning the pages eager to find out what happens next. The HEA is good without being at all sappy and the sexual tension and sex scenes are smokin'! My only beef was with Adam's initial waffling...I'd have either kicked him in the goods or thrown him down to suffer my attentions, but Claire's reactions were dead on for someone with her level of relationship experience. Now I'm chewing my nails and waiting for "Witch Fury" which should hit the shelves in June 2009.

I've just finished this and have to say how great it was.

The story follows on from book 2, and is Claire and Adams story.

Claire finds herself pushed from the demon realm carrying a "burden" that she doesn't really want or need.....she meets up with Adam who also carries a burden alto' one of a very different kind. Their relationship is plagued by a pair of rogue demons (who followed her from the demon realm, and who are intent on obtaining the "burden" she carries).

We learn more about the demon realm in this book and altho Claire has lived there for most of her life she makes the transition to living in this realm very well she is one strong lady. Adam is Alpha Male, exciting and adventurous and compliments Claire wonderfully.

More Demon Ass kicking.. and....more nice little Hot surprises:)

I loved this book...except for...wayyy too much sex and wayyy to much detail on the sex..lol.. I love Claire, I love her spunk but I myself would get sick and tired of Adam breathing down my neck constantly and his overwhelming need to protect her aka smother her.. With that said, I really do like Adam and Claire, but this falling in love within a couple of days of meeting and falling into bed and such is tiring for me as a reader. Sooo that is what I'm not crazy about in all of these books, but I still love the characters and the story-line. Rue was actually kind of likable in the end too! I liked learning a bit more about the demon world and Claire's take on it. I really can't wait to see what happens in the next book!

--
WHY DOES IT CREEPY?
.
Tapi ceritanya berdiri sendiri kok (prequelnya punya tokoh utama yg berbeda). Ratingnya dewasa ya, ada adegan hotnya 💋💋💋

Claire spent most her life enslaved to the daemon's. After being thrust back to Earth she is on the run from the evil daemon's with Adam trying to keep her safe. Adam is all messed in the head still morning his long dead wife. His attraction to Claire making feel as he is betraying his wife's memory. That part was annoying.

LOVED the storyline, but the end left me wanting more. It built up the whole book and felt like it was over in a second. The smut i wasn’t too phased on. I was hoping for more “thrill of the chase” but they were straight into it from the second they met. Not my kind of thing.

Accidentally read this instead of the first book of the series. I was told it was a well written romance. It's just erotica with chase scenes, skip this one.

Witch Heart is book three of Anya Bast's Elemental Witch series. Claire is a human that has been living as a handmaiden to a demon in another world Eudae, since she was six years old. After Thomas, head of the Chicago witch coven accidentally went through the portal and found himself in Eudae, Claire helped him to escape back to Earth (Book 2, Witch Blood). Claire's demon gifts her with a powerful magical weapon, the Elium which is attached to her core magic. She goes through the portal to Earth because she is being hunted by other demons who will kill her to get the Elium. When Claire arrives on Earth she meets up with Thomas's coven. Thomas assigns Adam, a fire witch, to protect her while they work on a solution to detach the Elium from Claire without killing her.

Okay, Witch Heart was the book I was referring too that sparked the poll on whether or not I should review a book that I was unable to finish. Many of you expressed an interest in hearing why I was unable to finish it and so I will give it my best shot, even though it has been two weeks since I attempted to read it. I did manage to read 200 pages out of 300.

Basically, the problem I had with the book was that there was so much potential for intricate world building, by showing how Claire had to adapt from going from the culture on Eudae to Earth. Unfortunately, there were just brief snippets of information that barely scratched the surface. The book definitely would have benefited and would have been more interesting if this aspect would have been better developed.

Another thing that really bothered me, was that both Adam and Claire were constantly internalizing every thought they had. It wasn't so much what I would call mental lusting, but more of just an internal monologue of their thoughts about the other person and any issues they had - and they did have issues. Adam's issues ranged from dealing with his new feelings for Claire and his old feelings for his dead wife. Claire had issues with having the Elium inside her and not wanting other people around her to get hurt, plus she didn't know how to deal with her attraction to Adam either. All these issues, instead of moving the book forward, seemed to stall the momentum of the plot and it made for some very boring reading. I think the main problem for me was my own expectations and unfortunately, Witch Heart didn't live up to them.

The third installment in the Elemental Witches series, Witch Heart pulls together Anya Bast's ability to write a great romance with a good plot that has some unusual story twists. Like the first two books in this series, the main characters, Adam and Claire, are part of a developing couple. Unlike the first two books, the emphasis shifts away from sex to the story and deserves a four star rating for the deepening plot.

Ms. Bast does not completely abandon her skill as a romance writer and continues to write good sex scenes. Similar to Witch Fire and Witch Blood , she uses sex to further the individual character development, but now her characters are on a more equal footing. Like Jack and Thomas, Adam is the third Alpha male; however, Claire is demanding in her own right and their telling is more of a partnership. That does not mean Adam never acts like a super protective white knight (Poor Micah). In a way, their sex is about healing their pasts. In Witch Heart , I think Ms. Bast finally achieves what she set up to do with the first Elemental Witch book, use sex as a catalyst for positive change and development, without making it the focus of the plot.

Although this book is entirely a stalking-the-prey story, the developments of where the witches came from, how the demon world is different, how demon magic differs from elemental witch magic and how Claire reconciles her own relationship with the demons pushes the series quite a bit further along than the first two books. Between the long introduction of Theo and a couple of plot twists toward the end of this book, I am actively looking forward to book 4.

Claire doesn't know the true meaning of right. Almost her entire life as a handmaiden in the world of Demons serving her master, almost like a father, Rue she has not had the freedom of other daughters. Because she is a witch/half demon, there are rules that will lock her in a cage. But when Rue kingdom is attacked by another less friendly demon army, he sends Claire to Earth and find the Coven witches for help. Along with the power the Atrikas want inside her. She begins her journey to Earth by seeing how selfish and uncaring humans can be and wonders how others like her can stand living among them. Days pass and she is sent to a hospital by humans thinking she needs "help" and is a danger to herself. This is where she meets three of the Coven witches, one she has already met. Along with Theo and Adam who came as bodyguards for her. At first Claire sees no point in saying anything to them because they don't see eye to eye. But when two Atrika demons seem to be following them, they'll have to come to any kind of agreement just to survive.

I liked this book because it has another side to the story between demons and witches the other three books don't show. To witches, demons are born evil and nothing can change that. All they do is kill and are barbaric. But to Claire, living with demons as a slave is much better than living with humans and their constant deceitful ways. And because she's female, she's treated with a lot of respect by all who are around her.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes the story of a girl who knows nothing about who she is and goes on this journey with strangers to find out the truth. Going through a complete change of how she thinks and questions how she was raised.

Really 3.5 stars

I strongly recommend the previous books in this series be read (Witch Fire and Witch Blood) before reading this book. I enjoyed this story, it was fast paced and action-packed. Claire the earth witch slave we met in the previous book Witch Blood, fines herself in a pickle when in turn she herself, has been involuntarily pushed through the doorway from Eudea (the demon realm) to the human realm. Having very little knowledge for the human culture, Claire cleverly tries to survive and out-wit the two demon-hunters who have been tracking her to kill her. Adam, a fire witch from Thomas Monahan's coven, volunteers to help Claire hide from the demon-hunters. Things progressed quickly between Adam and Claire but the chemistry between them felt coincidental and predictable. There was plenty of magic, mystery and intrigue. However I didn't enjoy this book was much as the first two in the series. Don't get me wrong, I was interested pretty much through the entire book; but there was a certain pizzazz lacking from the story. I categorize this book as a paranormal romance fantasy and therefore recommend this book and series to only those fellow dark urban fantasy readers, who have an abundance of patience and tolerance, to circumnavigate through the many sex scenes in order to remain with the plot, as well as weed through the overly predictable sections. I look forward to reading the next book in the series Witch Fury.

I also recommend:

This is by far the best I've read in this series. We've seen Claire in the last few chapters in Witch Blood (Thomas and Isabelle's story). For those who haven't read it yet, she's the one who aided Thomas in going back to Earth from Eudae (demon world).

I liked the story of Claire and Adam. I was skeptical at first because I've been conditioned to expect only those witches with elements that attract each other are compatible in the long term. The author focused on Claire first, a little history of her childhood and her status as Rue's handmaiden.

Her character build-up was good since I'm already familiar with Adam. He's another story and they make a great couple put together. Their backgrounds just mesh and there's more depth to their characters.

Lust, of course, is a part of the attraction and it really took time for them to get to know each other better before taking the plunge. Their love scenes were fewer compared with the previous books but that's what I appreciated about this book. There's the right amount of balance, a riveting story, well-imagined plot, and the character development.

The story reminded me of Harry Potter (7th book) because they were always on the run, the author really put me on edge, because they could die anytime, and the thrill factor was no matter how offensive they get, they could only do so much as stall the Atrika, not totally incapacitate or kill them.

I'm becoming more and more fascinated with the magick here and how the power was described. I'm also fond of Micah. Anya Bast really did a good job on this one.

Anya Bast creates one of my favorite characters in Which Heart. I love it when the females in a story are stronger than the males. Yet, even though Claire is more powerful than other witches she is venerable in a way no other witch is.

Claire has lived most of her life in a demon realm where her somewhat-caring master performs experiments on her magic, altering it in such a way that she is able to draw on all four elements at once. But the power threatens to consume her if she uses too much.

When her master is attacked by rebel demons seeking the Elium (a powerful demon weapon) Claire’s master embeds it within her magic core, and thrusts her through a portal into the earth realm. She is instantly lost, and only knows that she must find her own kind, witches. But she knows nothing of Earth and no one on Earth seems to know anything about witches or demons. There is a period of bumbling around and looking like a crazy bag lady, which was humorous.

Adam has been ordered by the witch council to keep Claire safe from the demons who followed her to Earth. Adam is somewhat of a playboy, and is not looking for a relationship, but something about Claire captivates him and he can’t seem to stay away from her.

Through the book we watch Claire and Adam’s relationship blossom, while Claire learns to control her powers that have been enhanced by the Elium inside her.

I consider this the best book of the series and if you like stories with magic, action, and sex then try this one out.

If three and a half stars were available that is what I would give Witch Heart. I enjoyed the storyline but once again Ms. Bast inserted so many sex scenes that it began to interfere with the plot. This was my complaint with book one in the series; however, Bast toned it down some in book 2 making it better. I am not sure if she is using sex as a page filler or what but, after awhile I found myself wanting to skip ahead because I was bored. Wow! did I really just write that? Who would have thought sex was getting boring (smile). In this installment, Claire (she doesn't know her last name) escaped the demon world and ends up on the streets of earth. She is confused and afraid. She tries to seek assistance by asking people on the street where the local witch coven is located; but, everyone thinks she is a homeless crazy person. To make matters worse, 2 demons followed her to earth in order to extract a power given to her by her owner, Rue. A man offers to assist her; however, he is a psychiatrist and has Claire committed. She sends out a powerful message to air elementals requesting assistance. Once the Mage of the coven realizes who she is he sends in a team of two (Adam and Theo) to extract her from the assylum. This begins the exciting journey of lust, love, and intrigue for Claire and her companions. It is good read but heavy laden with sex to the point of disstraction to the plot. However, I would still recommend reading the book.

This book mostly follows Claire, a human witch, who was sent to live in the demon world of Eudae by her mother when she was just a child. There she spent her life as a demon handmaiden, until the rouge demons of her land attack her owners in hope of getting a hold of a very powerful weapon. Claire’s demon owner then places this magick within her and sends her to earth hoping to keep this magic out of the hands of evil. Once on earth she finds that no one knows about witches and that she is completely alone. Meanwhile the Coven gets wind of a powerful witch in need of help and sends Adam out to get her. He is instantly drawn to Claire but living the life she has she knows little of love and fears what her owner will do to Adam if she gets involved with him. Claire must learn to use the magick within her without killing herself while Adam struggles to keep her safe from not only the evil that seeks to kill her but from her own fears.

This is the 3rd book in the Elemental Witch series by Anya Bast. Anya again brings us a powerful story with the members if the Coven seeking, first to save Clair from her life in the demon world of Eudae, then to save her from some rouge demons hell bent on taking the very powerful magick within her. Love and magick make up this wonderful tale that will leave you wanting more.

Early yesterday morning I finished Witch Heart (Elemental Witches, #3) by Anya Bast (★★★). This book has been sitting on my shelf awhile mostly b/c I couldn't remember much from the previous two books in the series and was too lazy to go back and re-read them. Well, I shouldn't have worried that much about it. Yes, there's a series plot arc that I was a bit fuzzy on, but the books stands pretty well as an individual and some of the series plot came back to me as I read.

The series is PNR and this book focused on Claire, a witch who was mosty raised in the demon world until just recently when her master/father/owner/mentor's home was under attack - he pushed a large amount of power into her and then shoved her through a portal into Chicago - followed by two nasty demons out to get her.

Claire manages to hook up with the Chicago coven (which, of course features our characters from books 1 & 2) and is assigned Adam as a protector. Sparks fly between the two as they're pursued across the country by the evil demons.

Sounds trite, but I really enjoyed the chase and the action sequences of this book. It wasn't anything special and the ending wasn't even close to being a surprise, but it was a nice cozy read with some fairly hot (if somewhat repetitive) sex scenes.

TBR 333

Claire had been in the demon dimension since still was six..
Her mother was a warlock - that is a witch who was 'gone over to the dark side'.

Adam & Claire fall in love -
Rue comes for her but she wants to stay.
Rue takes the weapon from her.
He gives her a bag of diamonds to help her establish a life on earth and another to give to Thomas to help rebuild the Coven

I loved the first book in this series, and the world the author established, but I've lost that earlier desire to see what happens next. This was not quite a 4* read for me, in part for the same reason that others may love it - when the main characters are literally running for their lives from more-powerful-than-anyone demons who can literally poof into their room and annihilate them, the author has them take long time-outs for mind-blowing lovemaking. OK, put that way, what's not to like?! But it also said to me that no one, including the author, was taking the life-and-death situation seriously, so why should I? It didn't just break the tension, it eliminated it.

And I had a problem with Adam's mindset about sex and love. He was so strongly in love with his now-dead wife that he felt he would be cheating on her if he fell in love again, but having indiscriminate sex with numerous women was not cheating?!

I was glad to read Claire's story and find out what happened to her after she rescued Thomas and sent him back to Earth in Witch Blood

Meh, nothing too special. And as far as the romance goes, "Even though I slept my way around the world, for some reason sex is different with her" is no longer a valid basis for love for me. The whole "she is different from everyone else" just doesn't ring true anymore. We're all different from each other, from our personalities to our backgrounds, our religions to our political views, our genetics to our environments. So falling in lust because she is "different" doesn't make sense. And I'm sorry Christine Feehan, but not all women have that innate feminine core hiding under a prickly bitchy exterior. How is she different, Adam? What is so different about her that makes her irresistable to you? Quit with the vagueness Bast. I get that it might be useful if you want your reader to imagine herself in the heroines shoes, but I don't want to be in the story. I want to read the story, hear about two people who genuinely fall in love with each other. Maybe I'm getting too picky. It is borderline erotica. I just want some emotion w/my smexy other than "Yeah, do me baby."
