The latest edition of this bestseller instructs and updates students and clinicians on the basic principles of psychological assessment and measurement, recent changes in assessment procedures, and the most widely used tests in counseling practice today. Dr. Danica Hays provides guidance on the appropriate selection, interpretation, and communication of assessment results. This edition covers more than 100 assessment instruments used to evaluate substance abuse and other mental health disorders, intelligence, academic aptitude and achievement, career and life planning, personal interests and values, personality, and interpersonal relationships. In addition, a new chapter on future trends in assessment discusses the changing cultural landscape, globalization, and technology. Perfect for introductory classes, this text provides students and instructors with practical tools such as bolded key terminology; chapter pretests, summaries, and review questions; self-development and class activities; diverse case examples; practitioner perspectives illustrating assessment in action; and resources for further reading.
The ONLY reason that I gave this three stars is because it is an excellent resource for assessments but reading it is a one-star experience. Ugh. It reads like a dull encyclopedia and I basically would just read it for notes because frankly, it is just painful. One of the worst textbooks in terms of readability. The author makes no attempt to make this more readable, it is just plain old boring.
I used this textbook as a graduate student and found VERY dry. It also assumes prior knowledge of statistics. If I didn't have a great teacher to explain the concepts, I might have felt a bit lost. Hopefully, the authors will consider revisions to make it more student-friendly. The information is excellent; the styling just needs help.
