This is an alternate-cover edition for B011GGSY5Y.

Hunter is on the run from a past he wants nothing more than to forget about. He settles into his new life in a new city with a sexy new neighbor who goes out drinking every night and seems to have a lot of kinky, fantastic sex every day.

Fiona has more than a few scars from her past, nightmares so bad she cant be in her own apartment at night. She spends her days moaning like a porn star to her phone sex callers and putting up walls so thick no one can break them down.

That is until she keeps getting woken up from the hot new guy next door and goes over to confront him, sending them both into uncharted territory.

When their pasts come charging into their present, will they be able to heal the old wounds enough to let each other in? Or is there some damage that is simply too difficult to overcome?

Fiona isn't the good girl next door. Far from it, actually. Her loud sex noises while she's on her "business" calls will disturb your afternoon, her stumbling home drunk at five in the morning will wake you up, and her penchant for wearing the smallest amount of clothes while on her balcony will have you drooling. But for Hunter she's the perfect neighbor to have because she gives him something else to think about besides the life he ran from. After he saves her from an assault outside of their building he realizes she's more than just a party girl, and someone he want's to know more about. All her darkness included.

Jessica has a special talent of writing these dark and twisted stories, and yet somehow adding some light to them. Two characters tortured by their pasts and on the run don't sound like characters that can have any good parts to their story. But they did. I really liked how through all their pain we could see the happiness that they brought out of each other. Even if you had to dig down deep to find it, it was there.

There was actually a lot involved with this book that wasn't just all darkness. There was humor, and sexiness, and a hint of sweetness throughout the entire thing. Oh and did I mention sexiness? 'Cause Hunter was Hot with a capital H! I liked reading about these characters and it was fun to read their story after I already met them in Shane. And as always with a Jessica Gadziala book, let me just tell you that all of her books come highly recommended by me and I hope you will give them a chance.

My first read by the author and such an awesome surprise!! Two damaged people (the heroine more deeply though), a huge city and a chance. The possibility of those two crossing each other paths were minimal, yet when they did, sparks flew - and the rest was just beautiful and messy and a little sad and yet uplifting history.

I loved the heroine!! Damn, Fiona practically lifted herself up from the shittiest situation, found her own footing and built herself up from scratch - and it was magnificent. Hunter could have been crafted a bit better, I wanted to see his character more clearly and to see some moooore grovelling; but at the end, he was okay the way he was, because Fiona chose him - and that lady knew her mind.

The ending was a bit crazy and twisted, but also oh so sweet and I loved it. So yeah, gimme more.

I liked so many things in this book. The MCs for one. The sex positive representation. The realistic depiction of dealing with trauma and how destructive that can be. The fact that healing takes time and it’s different for everyone and every journey.

I also think that the relationship of the MCs was healthy and a good start to build on something lasting.

Overall, I’d recommend but TW - it talks about some very graphic and disturbing abuse (not in the present)

Two people who ran away. Two people who found a new life in the big city. Two people who weren't willing to let down their walls until those walls came crumbling down. Hunter left his family and business behind, determined to strike out on his own and make a new way. Fiona had run away from an abusive background, determined to figure out who she was and where she fit. She was constantly terrified and tended to bury herself in her vices.,.

Until Hunter came smashing through and persisted to show her that she didn't have to be alone.

"I love you, Fee," he said simply. "I think I loved you the morning you stormed in and stole all my hammers. I think I have only loved you more each day since then."

As much as I enjoy a story about the broken ones, this one felt incomplete. After reading through so much of what Fiona had to deal with and continued to deal with, I didn't feel like there was any real resolution. I'm glad she got her happy ending with Hunter, but for everything she went through, I thought there would be more to it. Without giving too much away, she was pretty self-destructive and I'm supposed to believe that everything was a-ok without therapy? Some serious, intense therapy?

Whatever. As always, Jessica Gadziala gave me one heck of a sexy story with plenty of heart. I'm still very much in love with the Mallick brothers and their parents and their luck in finding the 'right one'. I'm off to find out what happened to Fiona's brother, Isaiah, in Dissent.

Overall Opinion: This was a pleasantly surprising read. With the synopsis I expected a pretty shallow but sexy read, and that's not what it was at all! It was surprisingly deep in that both characters had some big issues that they were dealing with (mainly Fiona), and it invoked some emotions from me to where I was really rooting for their happiness. And finally, I got a book that had enough closure -- it has a super sweet epilogue at the end that made me feel good for the couple.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Fiona and Hunter's story. They meet when Hunter moves in next door to Fiona. She is a damaged girl that owns a phone sex line that goes out and gets wasted every night to help forget about her gruesome past . Hunter is immediately drawn to her, and they form a friendship of sorts. The friendship turns into more, and they fall in love. There are some past demons that both of them have to face, some major family drama for both of them, some sexy times, some funny moments, and some sweet times...and they eventually get their HEA.

POV: This alternated between Fiona and Hunter's POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good. I didn't feel the need to skim, as it flowed nicely.

Instalove: No. It had good development of feelings.

H rating: 4 stars. Hunter. He's a great H that is loyal and caring for the damaged Fiona, and he also pushes her to be better.

h rating: 4 stars. Fiona. Man, she had a really tough upbringing. She was pretty damaged when we meet her, but she is a fighter and found her way (even if it wasn't conventional).

Sadness level: Low/moderate. I personally didn't get teary, but it does cover some heavy themes.

Heat level: Moderate. They have some steamy chemistry and sexy times, but not so much that it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes.

Safe sex:Yes, they use condoms.

OW/OM drama: No

Sex scene with OW or OM:

Cheating:

Possible Triggers:

Closure: This had a cute epilogue with some good closure, and a HEA ending.

How I got it: It was part of my kindle unlimited subscription.

Hell, shit, damn, expletive, expletive, and more expletives!

Have you ever read a book that frustrates you to the point of spewing expletives and being completely at a loss on how the fuck to rate the shit? Ever read a book that you love the characters and you are engrossed in the plot, BUT there's also some unforgivable element(s) that make you want to rip out an author's fingernails?

Writing

THE BAD!

description

The author didn't even put up the pretense of effort when it came to grammar. She just decided to write the sentences however the hell she saw fit. That doesn't really work for me:/

I take a lot of liberties in grammar when writing my reviews, but I'm not asking to be paid for them!

It doesn't bother me for an author to take the occasional liberty, but the whole damn book shouldn't be a grammatical liberty.

The occasional grammatical and editing error doesn't send me into a nervous breakdown mode, but every single sentence should not look like a preschooler composed it.

description

There's bad, and then there's protect your brain kind of bad. This is the latter.

"Spending my days wiping sweat from my brow and hoping my makeup wasn't running."

"Four years and going strong. I'd come a long way from those first days. A backpack in my arms full of clothes and what little money I had. Those days of clawing hunger and filth and cold and fear. Those days of not having a roof or food or safety. Those days that still managed to be better than what I was running away from."

"His hair, long enough to need to slick back or tuck behind his ears, was black as were the severe-looking eyebrows over his shockingly pale blue eyes."

"...od'd...."

"And I kept my clothes clutter in the luxuriously large closet I had sacrifices a few feet of my already small bedroom to."

"I had had the typical square..."

"I spent a lot of money getting it how I wanted with. Even though no one saw it but me."

"The door pulled open without and sliding of a lock. Which in any neighborhood was foolish, in ours it was downright asking for it."

description

So, you get the point, right? If the sentence isn't a run-on, then it's incomplete, and both options are littered with usage, punctuation, etc, etc, & etc...errors.

description

THE GOOD!

description

IF you can look past all the above butchering of every grammar rule in existence, the author's phrasing style and descriptive temperament is excellent!

"I was the Long Island iced tea of damage: everything but iced tea included.

She makes you feel it & see it to your very core, whether that be the sarcastic laughs, the poignant cries, or the indulgences of romance.

"One kiss. It wouldn't hurt. Even as I told myself, I knew it was a lie. Because kissing Hunter was like stepping into the sunlight after being in a cave for a year. It was blinding. It was warm. And, most of all it was comforting.

I wanted the MC to have that feeling and to find a person to help her escape her own destruction. And, that feeling was because the writer made me go through each and every scene right alongside the characters.

"My internal monologue had taken a turn toward the negative lately. True, my head has never been a happy place to be, but suddenly it was becoming a landmine filled field of self-loathing. I could hear his tone slipping into my subconscious. Because that's how good he was. One phone call and I was different.

I felt, envisioned, understood, and empathized as she was beating her head against the wall during a distressful phone conversation.

When she laid on the bathroom floor as if it was her only ally in the world, I felt her loneliness, her pain, her helplessness as if it were my own.

When she showed and told Hunter her past, I shed her tears for her.

description

.... if this author writes a book keeping her style but also ensuring that sentences are actually sentences.

Characters & Plot

They are complicated, real, tragic, funny, and oh so troubled characters. I could go on, but suffice to say that depth in characters was not this author's problem.

Plot wise, there isn't much I can say outside the blurb without going into details that would ruin how the character's histories are unveiled. Basically, two f'd up people try romance and have a lot of current and past emotional shit to work through to make a go at it.

description

It's only fair to warn that there are a lot of potential triggers in this book - child abuse, sexual assault, alcoholism, anger management, violence, religious zeal, self-harm, and cancer to just name a few. So, this is not light, fluffy reading.

As sad and tragic as the story is, it's also a story about moving past it all. Well, at least it was until the last third or so. I was ultimately left wondering...

description

I really don't understand what happened to the plot, but it takes a nosedive to wtf, lame, and dissatisfying at the end.

description

The author pulled on such deep emotional strings throughout the book. Instead of taking those strings and sorting them out, putting them back in place, she just kind of tore the fuckers out and skipped to the HEA.

description

Here's what I mean...

description

• The brother reunion felt so fucking weird - leaving a porno mag for him, her getting him a prostitute, him coming in and out of her apt, the glazing over of the childhood peeping incident, etc?

description

description

• No closure to a lot of issues - drinking, cutting, the brother, what happened the 10 weeks Hunter was gone, etc?

description

• The makeup with Hunter was pathetic. He leaves for three months and doesn't call. When she asks him why he didn't at least call, he asks her if she would've answered. Seriously? That's the climatic reconcile? Lame!

description

Bottom Line

So, what the hell am I supposed to rate this book?

I really loved the first 75% and the last 5%. But there was some parts that just really made me dislike Hunter and made him look incredibly weak. 3 months forgotten in less than 24 hrs? That made Fiona look weak. But I'm just mad. I still loved the story and really love the way Jessica grabs you with one liners, suspense and incredibly emotional plots. I really fell hard with these characters and I think that's why I feel like my own heart was broken. Then I can't read Isaiah and it's broken all over again.

Wow, this book gave me a lot of emotions! It’s deliciously angsty, sexy, and has a great plot, to boot! I love characters that escaped from cult-like beginnings, and Fiona’s strictly religious upbringing definitely fits that bill. She’s damaged and has extremely unhealthy coping mechanisms, but she’s no withering wallflower. She’s a very strong heroine, and I just loved her personality so, so much. For instance, she’s rude to her next-door neigbor when they first meet. So, as an apology, she gives him a cactus (because she was prickly with him!) Cute and sarcastic. I loved her to death. Her love interest and next-door neighbour (and receiver of said cactus) is Hunter, and he’s just as lovable and damaged as she is. Hunter has an intriguing background of his own. My only complaint (initially) was that his backstory was so fascinating and only introduced later in the book, which left me wanting more. BUT then I realized that the author has an entire series devoted to his brothers! So I’ll get to be finding out more about that lovable crime family when I pick up that series. I can’t wait!

The writing was already struggling, but using “skirt” for a women? That’s when my soul politely exited the premises.

And the romance? Please. The leads alone were kinda interesting, but their chemistry was as dead as my self-control when I see another unreasonably expensive journal. Zero sparks, zero tension, zero reason to root for them. Next.

I loved Fee, liked Hunter and actually despise Hunter's sewer slime parents. They are disgustingly abusive and every time they show up in Navesink Bank I want to go over to the Henchman compound and raid their vault, or hit Janie up for the proper application of plastique explosives.

Srsly, those two pretty much ruin whatever scene they are in and I want them permanently voted off the island.

Other than that, I had a good time with this one and tho I have read the rest of the brother's stories too, they are not my favorite people in Navesink Bank so I never give this part of the series high marks.

I'm not sure where to start with this one. Parts of it were hard to read about. I don't think the synopsis does the book credit and a lot of people will pass over it because of the phone sex. Silly people, this book is so much more than that!

description

Fee had so much trauma from her past, but she was doing what she could to keep the demons away. I liked her, she had a lot of spunk, especially at the end of the book.

"The nights were the hardest to get through alone in a small apartment with the memories making the walls close in tighter."

"Sixteen had some demons. And instead of facing them, she was burying them."

Hunter, ah that man was so good. Not quite up there with Reign, but close, especially in the bedroom. He forced Fee to deal with things instead of closing everything out.

description

This wasn't all gloom and doom, there were parts that were very amusing. Especially the whole vibrator scene. But also the fetishes Fee encountered.

"Oh, the virgin fetish. Always going strong. Every man wants to be the first, the only."

"She'd once whinnied like a horse in the throws of it all."

And the way Fee reacted to Hunter made me feel all mushy inside.

"That's what kissing Hunter felt like: freedom. After a life of being imprisoned."

"That maybe my frozen little heart was thawing a bit"

Like I mentioned I loved the end of this book and I loved the writing. Jessica Gadziala just has a way with words. The reason this isn't a five star for me? When I compare this to Reign it doesn't quite meet up to the high that gave me.

I wasn't expecting the hint of darkness at all!! Even though the other 2 books are not a fun walk in the park, Fiona's story got me hooked and worried all along!

The brutality of her past, his secret family issues, the intense sex scenes and their tenderness made this story so easy to read.

What it was missing was the hot and awesome side kick but I got a glimpse of the Mallicks, so Im fine with that....oh and also, I would have made him beg a little bit more!!

I just cant seem to get enough of Jessica's amazing writing skills.

I'll be honest. This book was a solid three-star read for me up until the seventy-eighth percent mark. Having read all of Jessica Gadziala's books in the Henchmen and Savages series, there were some characters mentioned in her other books that I've been dying to know about, and this book happened to feature one of those members and I didn't even realize it until the end of the book! The main character's name seemed familiar to me, but I hadn't made that connection early on! Yeah, I could kick myself! Grrr!

I liked the characters and especially loved the heroine's humor, but I didn't exactly fall in love with the story. At the seventy-eighth percent mark, it is revealed who Hunter really is and what his family is like...and my opinion of the book immediately went up a couple more points. I liked the criminal connection/element revelation, but nothing else materializes in that direction. The focus of the story is ultimately on how two people form an unexpected connection and utilize that attachment to better themselves.

I usually shy away from books about physical/ psychological abuse related to religious exclusivity/ fanaticism, and I really should have heeded the trigger warnings related to this book, but I didn't even glance once at those warnings because I've enjoyed Gadziala's easy writing style in the past. Next time, I will look at the warnings! I liked the epilogue featured, but overall, this was an okay read for me. I'm intrigued about how Fiona's brother transitions into a new lifestyle because he has his own book, but I anticipate that book will have dark, disturbing, religious elements noted as well.

This Jessica Gadziala book I had a hard time with. The others I've read were really good, this one was just okay. Our heroine was a basket case when the book started, ready for a mental institution. She was a phone sex operator from home during the day and drank all night at various bars leaving with various people so she didn't have to sleep at home in the dark. Seems she was horribly abused as a child by a devoutly religious father who took the Bible quite literally. Oh, and she also had a side job selling her used panties through the mail to men who enjoyed the "scent". Weird and certifiable.

But to me she was cured fairly quickly when she met her neighbor. For someone as demented as she was, everything seemed to be fixed way too quickly. What should have taken years seemed to be accomplished in a week or so. It just didn't make sense to me. But, I'm sure there will be other books by Ms. Gadziala that I will happily enjoy.

I really enjoyed this story even though it's dark in places. Fiona had a horribly strict childhood. I truly felt for her and what she suffered through. It was different than what I assumed which made me want to know more when she finally started to reveal details.

The hero, Hunter, was okay. I didn't have strong feeling's one way or the other. I guess that had to do with the fact that although it was dual POV's, we got very little of his POV.

The author chose to tackle a delicate issue: Cutting. It seems she's done her research. It was brutal at times and made my heart go out to the FMC. Since I'm a bit jaded at times, I'd say that's quite an accomplishment.

I do wish her grandmother had paid a price for her part in what happened to Fiona. She shouldn't get away scott free.

This story....damn! I wasn't expecting all that. What Fiona went through as a child, broke my heart and left me disgusted. It's unbelievable how such violent things can happen to a person and be considered 'discipline'. It's not right.

If you go into this book blind, then you'll think this book is light and fluffy, dealing with a phone sex operator. You'll be 50% right. Fiona is a phone sex operator. Light and fluffy is nowhere on the scale to describe this book. It's heartbreaking, and devastatingly sad. It's 100% raw. And there are some lighter moments thrown in. It's the perfect balance, trust me!

Without giving much away, Hunter is Fiona's new neighbor who is interested in her because she's a spitfire. For real, Fiona is my girl. I loved her. Even with all her demons and her pain, she is beautiful. Hunter gets to know her a bit more, understanding why she is the way she is. Hunter also has a past that haunts him so you know something is going to happen....

I honestly couldn't put this book! I highly recommend it!!!!!!

This author is new to me and when I read the book about Shane I was very curious about Hunter and Fee.
It was a nice surprise and the story is very good. Recommend!

"The ax forgets, but the tree remembers".

"So," I said, breaking the impossible silence, "if I walk out on my tab tonight..." I saw the knowing smile on Hunter's face while I spoke, "which one of them is gonna break my kneecaps?"

Rounding up to 5 stars

I really need to start reading things in order.

I read Shane before For a Good Time, Call and I can't tell if that was a good or bad idea. I think I'm going with good because if I had I probably wouldn't have read Shane at all.

In a few of Jessica Gadziala series there's a pretty specific formula to follow: girl, with a healthy amount of snark, gets into really fucked up trouble (or is outrunning trouble), she's super traumatized and buries that under her snark. The dude shows up super alpha and not really interested in a relationship but offers shelter to said girl. He gets into the relationship before she does and everything gets good and mushy and cute before her past catches up to her and one of the MCs needs to be saved.

Don't get me wrong, I love it. This formula works for me. I love the way Jessica Gadziala writes. Her alphas are some of my favourites and her heroines are absolutely incredible.
A lot of romance writers keep the women pretty bland and without a discernible personality so readers can imagine themselves in the story. I hate this. With a burning passion. Those bitches are boring and it's impossible for me to understand how a guy can "fall in love" with a girl who barely talks, is super boring and is constantly a pushover.

That's never a problem with JG books. And I think that's why some people will have problems with them. The girls are loud, fucked up, traumatized, snarky, rude, foul-mouthed and usually quick tempered. I think one line in Wolf was that Janie would argue over the sun coming up and then argue again about it going down, just for the fun of it.
It says a lot about me that these are my favourite kinds of heroines. I am these girls, so of course I'll love to read about feisty, foul-mouthed, broken women and I have no shame about it.

SO for me, Fiona was incredible. I loved her to bits and she was definitely the star of this story. But shockingly, JG diverted a little from the regular formula and Hunter was just as fucked up as Fee!
I'm actually shocked at the difference between the perspective on the Mallick family from Hunters POV and Shane's. When I was reading Shane's book I looked at all their interactions as hilarious, yes criminal, but he made it sound like a quirky lil family thing I just accepted it.

Then I read Hunter's POV I was confronted with... how fucked up it is to force your sons to fight and become enforcers in your loansharking business.
Super fucked up.

So yeah I'm kinda glad I didn't read this before Shane because I would have hated the family, and Shane, and never given that book a chance.

I pretty much have zero complaints and only extremely positive feelings about this book. I think the only thing wrong with it for me was the practically non-existent grovelling at the end. Actually there was no grovel, just statements of facts and Fiona accepts them without much internal monologue about it and boom forgiveness.

Too bad though, I really love a good grovel. It's like angst crack and really helps me resolve any negative feelings I may have against one of the MCs before I can root for them again. Without it their reunion and HEA feels a little awkward. Like you got the goods with none of the work.

Fiona is doing everything she can to avoid the past, and the way she grew up. That involves drinking a lot, and being just generally destructive. But, when she gets a new neighbor and has an instant attraction to him things start to spiral out of control.

Hunter is also running from his past, and he has no idea how to move forward, but he wants to try with Fiona. But, when the past catches up with both of them it may be too late.

This book was a major surprise. It is a contemporary type of book with some dark aspects, but it was also pretty funny at times as well. I really enjoyed the hero and heroine together.

And the plot line was very different, and kept me interesting from start to finish.
The only thing I really didn't like was a few things that happened towards the end that I just didn't understand why that happened the way it did.

But, other than that I thought the plot was good, the characters were very good, and over all it was just a good book!

What a treat!

I didn't expect anything when I read this book and turns out it's a roller coaster ride! Sure there are parts that I don't like and feels unresolved but overall I enjoyed this book. I was hoping Hunter could be a bit more Alpa-ish though, because he's way too meek for his own good. I want to see him stronger than ever because Fiona needs a man to rely on.

Look forward to read more from Jessica Gadziala!

Me da la sensación que es más de lo mismo, las características de los personajes me recordó a sus otros libros. Veremos qué onda.

Una historia para pasar el rato; tiene un algo, pero tampoco me voló la cabeza.
