Jiří Kratochvil is a Czech writer. In 1991 he was awarded Tom Stoppard Prize for his book Medvědí román ("A Bear's Novel"). In 1999 he was awarded the Jaroslav Seifert Prize.

Kratochvil se kot literarni "otožni" Bog poigrava z vstopanjem/izstopanjem v/iz življenjskih zgodb, najraje in najbolj odgovorno pa to počne s svojo; od Boga si izposodi vsemogočnost (brez religioznih elementov) in jo preizkuša na melanholičnem knjižničarju Alešu v brnskem predmestju. Mrakobno življenje mu popestri z nadrealističnimi, skrajno grotesknimi pripetljaji v lastni družini, ki se vede kot kultna skupina in ga želi postaviti na njen tron, sam pa se kakršnekoli vloge na vse pretege skuša otresti. Po želji ga "Bog" Kratochvil lahko v naslednjem poglavju iz zgodbe izpiše - ali se bolje - prepiše.

Since this year (2019) there is a Dutch Translation of the book by translator Tieske Slim. I had the honor to be present at the presentation of the Dutch version, called 'Een bedroefde God', at the Czech consulate in Groningen (NL). The presentation aroused my curiosity and the book surely did not disappoint.

It seems that Jiří Kratochvil is not only a great storyteller, but also that he does this with great pleasure. The plot makes it very hard to categorize the story. The very end is at the same time briljant and a little disappointing, and some other things in the story seem a little bit 'over the top'. But this is what the story is: a surrealistic story, containing very well camouflaged fiction and at the same time a beautiful description of the surroundings of the writer, and (of course) the society in post-communistic Czech Republic.

Kratochvil is een uitstekende verhalen verteller. Hij weet je als lezer steeds weer op het verkeerde been te zetten en stapelt als het ware verrassingen maar brengt op die manier ook gelaagdheid aan.Hoe ontkom je aan de alomtegenwoordigheid van een machtige familie waarin je een buitenbeentje bent als je met de dochter van een pater familias gaat?
De scenes volgen elkaar in een razend tempo op, het gevoel van tempo wordt nog versterkt door het zowel vooruit als terugkijken tijdens een scene, je wordt op die manier meegezogen in de draaikolk van deze god.

Beviel me erg goed, waardoor ik zin krijg in meer boeken vanuit Oost-Europa. Beetje theatraal, veel metaforen, veel zelfreflectie (en -relativering), en tegelijk ook nuchter en droog. top.

Tak já nevím. Z jedné strany se mi to příjemně četlo, ze strany druhé to bylo docela wtf a nějak jsem zatím nedokázala rozklíčovat, co tím chtěl básník říci. Je to první knížka od Kratochvila, kterou čtu, možná by to zacvaklo, kdybych znala kontext tvorby, ale takhle spíš nevím, co si mám myslet.

Zvláštní kniha. Taková o něčem a o ničem, ale četla se mi dobře a rychle. A vlastně jsem byl zvědavý, jak to všechno skončí. Takže 3 hvězdičky ať nežeru :)
