Hunter Legends #13.5

Fear the Darkness

This is a special thank you to readers for all the great years. It’s a small story about Nick’s homecoming to New Orleans after his mother’s death and after Katrina.

I knew from the beginning what was going to happen to Nick. I wanted the reader to see the birth of a Dark-Hunter, only to have it with a twist. And even though I knew what was going to happen, I still cried when I wrote the scene.

Nick Gaultier

A teeny tiny story (less than 20 pages) about Nick's return to New Orleans.
Nick is
-heartbroken after his mother' s death
-sad for the destructions after hurricane Katrina
-angry with Acheron because he didn't help him when he needed him the most
-manipulated by Satara snd Stryker
-ready to become a traitor

Fear the Darkness is a Nick short. He's back home to New Orleans after his mother’s death and after Katrina.
It's perfect, the only problem is that it's too short.

I'm afraid Nick's journey won't be easy...

This is just a tiny novella that tells of Nick's return to his New Orleans home for the first time since the death of his mother and the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.

Nick still holds a lot of hatred and anger for Acheron, who he blames for the death of his mother, but at least he was not as whiny and annoying in this as he was when he popped up in Dark Side of the Moon.

That said, both Stryker and Satara are pulling Nick's strings and he is rapidly heading on the slippery path to becoming a full blown villain in this series. I'm not impressed at all with the lack of loyalty he is showing towards Kyrian or the monstrous bargain he is pondering. If he goes ahead with it I hope Acheron kills the little wretch off!

Rating: 3 stars.

Audio Note: This tiny novella was narrated by Holter Graham who did a decent job.

OK for all of you people dissing Nick and saying he should get over the death of his mom, you should really read the entire series. Acheron is one of the most powerful gods alive, and has more control over fate than the fates themselves. If he wanted to he could destroy the entire greek pantheon, including demigods and lesser gods. So when he told Nick to kill himself and save him the time, he cursed him. There would be no way for Nick to get out of the situation after that. Also if you read The Chronicles of Nick, which tells of Nick's past and when he was friends with Acheron you would know hate, anger, and remorse comes naturally to Nick. Even his mom says he "over acts on everything." That is because is the Malachai, a being born of evil. He is also the only good Malachai ever born, due to his mother's love. At his full power he rivals Acheron. It's a miracle that he could feel anything other than hate, so get over him being ticked off at Ash. In the Dark Hunters Nick unlocks his powers after 400 yrs, but then goes back in time (a power he stole from a demon by drinking his blood) and unlocks his powers at age 14. His meddling through time makes several problem. The first time Nick gets killed by demons, the second he is enslaved by Noir, and Ambrose (Nick from the future) said the third was so horrible that he didn't want to talk about it. This Nick is the fourth Nick and Ambrose only has enough blood left for one more life, this will become his real past. After Cherise's death Nick even pleaded for Acheron to save her life, but Acheron refused to listen to him. Nick has to learn ten lessons or the past will remain the same (Cherise dies, Nick commits sucide etc.) but if he does manage to master them he will be able to save Cherise and so on. In a fit of rage Nick fed from Stryker, and now Stryker hears and sees everything Nick does. That is why he is so lonely. Nick is not a bad guy, he's a great guy who lost everyone. Don't think that i'm taking a side over this Nick and Acheron are tied for the role of my favortie character in this book.

Delve into Nick Gautier (Squire gone Dark-Hunter) head a little bit. OK OK I get it, Nick loved his mother but geez, get over it already! I get really tired of all the characters taking it out on Ash. Nick was the one who got himself in trouble not Ash. And Ash didn't make Nick sleep with Simi nor did he kill Nick's Mom.
I can already see the writing on the wall - Nick the traitor is gonna do something really bad and stupid and Ash is going to have to hurt him... to be continued (I'm sure!)

Oh myyyy! Nick Gautier. I love, love, loved Nick Gautier. I liked him when I saw him in Kyrian's book (Night Pleasures). And it broke my heart what happened to him. It saddened me to see him consumed by so much hatred and bitterness. I miss the goofy, fun, and loving Nick. I hope Ms. Kenyon brings him back to his old self soon. This book excited me to read more about Nick's journey, and I realized how much I missed this series.

This short story gives us an update on Nick Gaultier. He is still wicked angry about the death of his mother, and also what he perceived as a betrayal by his best friend, Ash. I understand his anger, but I also think he needs a kick in the pants!

It's a short story and it is such a teaser. There's no ending, just a set-up for the next Dark-Hunter novel...kind of an "in case you were wondering what Nick was up to in between books." :) it's a good teaser, though

First Thoughts:

I know, I know. How can I give this little thing 3 stars when I gave all the other books just as much. Especially when I already told everyone that Nick's shit (while Ash is the Shit).

Well, he still annoys the hell outta me, but in this book we see another part of him. Not only the "Oh, the whole world's crap!"-part, but the "I am crap, too"-part. The part where he doesn't blame Ash the whole time, but himself, too. I don't say it's healthy, because, hell, it isn't. But it made me sympathize with him.

We already knew that he loved his Mommy, but it was different to read those pages, without thinking about some chick and some Dark Hunter, who wants to get laid.

It was ONLY about the the aftermath of Ash's *deep voice*
"Yo, bro. You better go kill yourself, because you fucked The Simi (who's like my daughter, although, yes, you didn't know she was and yes, she actually seduced you. So who cares?)!"
and Nick's *girly voide*
"Oh, it's all Ash's fault, damn him! I'm so going to be all pissed, becoming a Dark Hunter and get revenge! And oh, I'm also going to be pissed because Ash didn't safe my mom - although I know that her death isn't the end of her existence! And while I'm at it, why don't I blame him for not saving the world from some hurricane? I mean, that is so reasonable, esp. when I have no idea what Ash had actually done back then."
And after Artemis *stupid bitchy, whiney, artemis-y voice*
"Oh, although he killed himself and it's against the rules to make him a Dark Hunter, I'm going to do just that, because I don't want Ash to be pissed at me and I'm a selfish bitch, aah I mean, I'm a goddess who has to bear so much, that this would be too much. Yes. So, here he comes, new Dark Hunter, yay!"

However the Nick-plot seems to be.. well, uncomfortable. Okay, so, yes, some people might call that "thrilling" or "exciting".. Thinking about it, huh, maybe I just have to be a little more open-minded.. Whatever. I mean, come on. They were buds, right? And I liked old Nicky. Why did Ash and Nick go from that:

Nick Gautier is back in New Orleans. He's bitter, angry, vengeful... and in complete denial.

Nick was one of my favorite characters, though I sometimes wished someone (or something) would bitch-slap the boy, already.

Now that he's immortal, apparently with powers similar to those of Ash, and with an express link to Kalosis and Stryker, I wish someone would kick his idiotic Cajun ass to Katoteros and back.

I understand he's bitter because of his mother's death, I understand his anger, but his conviction that everybody else is to blame for what he himself is responsible for is just so utterly juvenile it makes me grit my teeth.

I really hope he can redeem himself before he does something more stupid that he's already done.

Let me get on my soapbox for a minute... the last time I saw Nick he was angry at the world for his problems and did the ultimate betrayal to the dark hunters by becoming what he promised to protect and with his enemy Stryker.

Nick finally admits in this short story that he can only blame himself for what happened to him and his mother. *boohoo* Nick cry me a river already, man up and deal. He has pissed me off so much I almost threw my kindle out the window. I swear if he doesn't do right by Arch I will... when I think of something truly appalling then I will let you know. I wish I could reach into the book and choke some sense into that boy. Onto the next book and hopefully I do not see too much of that man or so help me...*shakes fist up and down*. Now that I am off my soapbox, as usual Sherrilyn has done it again another great read.

I don't know if it was such a good idea to pick up these novellas. I mean, after reading this short story I can tell that I'm missing ALOT. Nick has come along way from being a simple squire, apparently. But I'm kinda annoyed because this doesn't really tell you anything....or maybe it does. I'll have to read the main books to get the whole picture. Although this was a super short read for me, it was enough to draw some serious emotions like, confusion, frustration & pity. Now, I really gotta go back and do some reading, ha!

Nick Gaultier's little story (Kyrian's former squire, currently Dark-Hunter / Daimon)

Mmmmm, I don't know, I'm still not convinced by the twist that the author gave to this character, I feel like she ruined him.

This story was to short, it was such a tease. I hope Sherrilyn Kenyon comes out with Nick's story soon.

In this short story, Nick returns back to his home after his ordeal with Stryker and Satara. He is now a Dameon Dark Hunter only with special powers stronger than the regular Dark Hunters. He can walk about in the day light like Acheron.

Nick's hatred towards Acheron is still strong but his reasonings and understandings about the situtations around him are starting to become clearer as he learns of the acts that Acheron has done.

However, even though his feelings are changing, Satara is constantly putting and feeding hatred into Nick. Nick realizes this so he keeps himself from letting Satara and Stryker know how he feels especially when he finds out who Acherons mother is and learns that it is Acheron's mother Apollomy who rules the dameons and that Stryker is her son too.

Now Satara has promised Nick that they can bring his mother back if he gets Kyrans daughter to them. Satara calls in a Dream Hunter to give Nick a teaser of his mother.

The story leaves off at a point that keeps us wondering if Nick will get Kyrans daughter and turn her over to the Dameons.

Fear the Darkness is a short story that is about the length of a chapter set in the Dark-Hunter world. It follows Nick Gautier as he returns to New Orleans for the first time after being turned into a Dark-Hunter. This story added some depth and dimension to Nick's grief not only over his mother's death but also the destruction of his beloved home town following Hurricane Katrina. I liked that Nick was having some small measure of doubt about his anger toward Acheron for those two events, but he's not going to give up his burning need for revenge quite so easily with two villains playing his emotional turmoil for their own selfish gain. Overall, Fear the Darkness was a good story that appears to be a nice set-up for future events in the series. Even though I still miss the old jovial Nick, I'll be interested to see where this path takes him. Fear the Darkness is available as a free e-book download from the author's website.

Are you guys that are criticizing Nick for being pissed at Ash have you all forgot that Ash is like one of the fates? What he speaks becomes reality? When Nick slept with Simi and Ash found out he told Nick to just killed himself and save him (Ash) from having to do it later. So therefore when Nick found his mother murdered he followed through with what Ash told him to do he killed himself only difference was before he killed himself he called Artie there to make him a Dark Hunter so he could take his revenge on Desiderius but instead once he killed himself and Artie sent him to a holding area he decided to be pissed at Ash. Nick also knows more about Ash then most all of the other dark hunters and that's why he said Ash could've stopped Katrina he knew that he could've just spoke the word and Katrina could've missed New Orleans. If you guys listen to Ash's story you will found out a lot more about Ash and how he is a god of creation and destruction and what he says even in passing will be.

Nick comes back to an entirely different New Orleans. He still holds Ash responsible for his mother's death and the fate of the city. This reader's opinion is that since Nick's made more than a few changes it's doubtful he'll ever be the lovable scamp from the beginning of the series. All I know is Nick can only be mad at Nick. (Everything he did, he did of his own free will.)

While this teaser doesn't have much more than a chapter or two it does give great insight into Nick Gautier as he becomes Nick 2.0.

A short story told mostly from Nick's POV with a bit at the end from that bitch Satara. I do not like that woman.

The road Nick is walking scares me. I hate that he's consumed by so much grief, hatred and bitterness. I really hope he doesn't seriously consider doing what Satara has asked him to do. Kyrian, Amanda, Ash and just about everyone else would never forgive him for it. I'm really hoping he doesn't do it. Still, I'm sure things are going to get a whole lot worse for Nick before they have any kind of hope of getting better.

And who the hell is living in Nick's house?

Wow, this was really too short for a review, less of a short story and more of a snippet.

Nick Gaultier comes back to New Orleans to see the devestation. He is approached by forces for good and evil (for want of a better description) and each tries to sway him.

Which one will he pick?

I have issues with Nick's hatred of Ash - I just don't get it, it doesn't 'feel' genuine for a man to turn against his best friend and hate him so much and refuse to listen/believe in anything good about him.

Me copa muchísimo Nick como el antihéroe. Sé que está haciendo las cosas "mal", y se va a mandar varias macanas, pero me encanta!
Un hombre bueno que se vuelve villano por el dolor y la impotencia de haber perdido a su madre. Me encanta!

This is a super short story to give us some insight on Nick, what he is thinking and feeling. I love Nick and can't wait to have some more of him. I can't imagine where Kenyon is going to take his story, but it will be an interesting journey for sure.
