I feel like I've been waiting a long, long, long time to mark "I'm Finished" with this book. Now, looking at the dates, I'm reminded that it's only been 11 months, making me feel a little impressed with myself that I took 4 college classes that utilized this book in just one year! I'm a teacher of the gifted who was hired on a waiver, and this was the textbook that all my college coursework required. I learned a lot from this book, and didn't mind revisiting chapters when I needed to read the same ones for multiple classes. One critique is that some sections are in deep need of revision; for example, the part about "Gifted and Gay" students where they talk about how much shame and ostracization these students MUST feel, and how they have to hide that identity from their families and school communities. That would have resonated more when I was a in high school, but now, LGBTQ+ students have a much greater chance of being supported by family and friend groups. My last remaining step towards getting my gifted teaching endorsement is taking the Praxis exam, so hopefully this book has given me what I need to pass it when I take it in 2 weeks!
There were certain parts of chapters in this loooooong text that interested me, and there were others that were not germaine to anything I wanted to learn about. A few things: 1. The amount of text on each thin, thin page is very difficult to read. I’m sure it’s a cost-saving measure but it’s tough. 2. There are so many studies and name-dropping in here, and although this is the 7th edition of the book, it’s a bit much for me. 3. The research that must have gone into this text is incredible. It truly is the standard for all-things gifted education. With all that being said, I will keep this book, although it cost $100 because there is so, so much information packed in here.
This is comprehensive look at educating the gifted and talented population. I found it informative and useful. Many chapters cover ideas to be used in the classroom. The book also dispels misconceptions of the gifted students, in addition to concrete steps in helping a struggling child. This will be in near reach for years to come as both a teacher and parent of gifted children.
