Love, Jane

Rate this book
Jane Reeves and Sean O'Callaghan seem to be a match made in heaven—but the timing is all wrong. Jane has her heart set on serving a mission, and she can't delay telling Sean the news any longer: not only has she quietly submitted her mission papers, but she's also leaving in a month ... for Alaska. Shocked and devastated, Sean struggles to come to terms with Jane's decision. Unable to deny the depth of their feelings for one another, Sean makes a promise to wait for her.

Life unfolds for both Jane and Sean, with communications limited to weekly e-mails. But with just a few months left in Jane's mission, Sean's messages stop. When she receives the dreaded "Dear Jane" breakup along with the news that she has been replaced by Sean's former flame, Jane knows the future she envisioned now belongs to another woman. But upon her return home, Jane quickly realizes some things are worth fighting for—perhaps, most of all, a shot at true love.

During her early years of reading, Ranee` S. Clark devoured fantasy books, which continued into her adulthood—since she often believes that a well-written romance novel is a delightful fantasy. Though raising three boys can sometimes hamper both romance with her own Mr. Charming and her writing, she tries to get a little of both in every day. And most of the time she succeeds.

This book is split up in three parts. Basically the first part is Jane falling in love with Sean. Jane then telling Sean that she is going on a church mission. The second is events that happened to both Jane and Sean while she was away. The third is Jane deciding to fight for Sean so they can be a "happily-ever-after." None of that is a spoiler because it's in the book description.

The book is really about the emotions that come from commitment, integrity, friendship, and love. Jane and Sean have to explore their feelings throughout most of the book. Neither of them take their decisions lightly. I felt that the book centered on more what you would sacrifice for love, be it romantic love or a love of religious beliefs.

There were a few parts that made me uncomfortable, I knew what the characters should do, but the author had them come to their own conclusions. There was one character that I thought was a big manipulator, so she was not on my favorite person list.

This is a cute book that is centered around religious beliefs, even though it didn't come across as preachy. The characters were living lives with faith. (LDS faith references)

This book is clean with kissing.

This book is written for and geared towards the LDS audience. ( Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) The characters are LDS and a good part of this story focuses on Jane serving a mission for her church. Praying and faith are a big part of this book.

I've read previous books by this author and really enjoyed them. Ranee Clark is a fun writer. This book wasn't my favorite of hers and I'm not completely sure why. I think I didn't really love Jane but I did admire some of the growth she made by the end of the book. The first part of this book is about the beginnings of a relationship for Jane and Sean. The second part is while Jane is on her mission and Sean is dealing with life back home. The third section is Jane returning home. I guess for me, this book felt more disconnected because even in the first part of the book, Jane and Sean have a rocky start. Jane is hiding things, she comes off wishy washy, lacking a backbone and she doesn't treat Sean all that great. The second section is the two apart. Jane is still struggling with all the same things, just in a new setting and Sean is drifting. Both have things going on in their own worlds that cause frustration. I think I just didn't connect to the characters the way I wanted to. I didn't love them. I felt like I was on the outside looking in.

Even saying that, I did like the book, I just didn't love it. Like I said before, Ranee Clark is a fun writer and I always look forward to her books. I will keep coming back because I know what to expect from her and I like it.

Ooh, and I love the cute cover on this book!

I'm not sure this is actually a romance. It's much more a coming-of-age story about two people who have taken their time to grow up. It's not that they're irresponsible or anything, just that they both have avoidance responses (though in different ways) and both need to get over it in order to reach the HEA at the end. Also, it's firmly an LDS novel and falls across the didactic line more often than not. Not in a bad way, or anything, but in a way that limits the audience to not only those who are LDS, but to those LDS members who want their stories pristine.

Still, it might have been fun if Sean hadn't been such a clunch. I really liked Jane's arc. Clark does an excellent job illustrating her growth and even as I was frustrated from time to time that she was taking so long to "get it" I was still firmly in her corner and delighted in her progress. Sean, though? Yeah, that boy needed some serious bludgeoning. Frankly, by the end, I was asking myself what Jane sees in the doof and hoping she'd find someone worthy of her (in some other novel, maybe?). At any rate, Sean was a dead loss and I felt more than a little like Pavlov's dog near the end only with flinching whenever I realized that the next section would be him. Which most of the end of the book was...

So Sean it is that drags this down to three stars. It was bad enough he's lucky that's as far as I'm taking it down, frankly.

A note about Chaste: This was very, very chaste. But then, see the LDS comments above. There's some kissing. But not a lot of lingering.

A note about availability: Yet again, this is a Covenant Communications book and they're still asking $11 for eBooks. Yes, I still believe that's a really stupid practice and denies books any shot at early momentum and a lot of potential readers. At least they can say that they're inflexible and experiment-averse? In this case, it's not a huge loss as I can't really recommend this to most of those who read my reviews.

This is an Christian Romance specifically geared to an LDS audience. I think if you were not LDS this book wouldn't make too much sense. I normally don't like books like this they just aren't my cup of tea, but a friend asked me to read it. I was surprised that I did like it. It had some good characters that lead and drove the book. It delved into the thoughts, emotions and feelings of why we make hard decisions especially around the church and love. Nothing crazy exciting about the book, I think I loved the first part of the book the most. I also think this author has promise and I will be watching what she writes next.

I love this cover! And I've decided that after reading this, I'm a really nosy person. I love details (but not too many, haha) and wanted to know more about Jane and Sean. I wanted to see them meet; I wanted to know their deepest, darkest feelings; I wanted to understand what like experiences made them who they are. I felt like a few of those details were skimmed over or thrown in as afterthoughts, but if everything was written out, it would be a really long book, so I get why they weren't included.

The meat and bones of the story focuses on Jane and Sean and their road to romance--right thing, wrong timing. Sean is a great guy with ultimate amounts of patience, but I wanted Jane to be more open and communicative. Together, they have something great, but the path isn't easy. At all.

This book is a fun flipside to the typical "girl waits for guy." It's a fun twist to see it from another point of view. I also enjoyed the little side story that teaching at a high school brings to the plot.

A good portion of the book showcases Jane's LDS mission and her experiences of faith that helped her grow. I love it when characters go through a growth process. I love the transformations and progress that brings me hope. I love connecting to them in a way that makes them feel like "real" friends and I enjoyed my time with them.

Content: mild romance; moderate religious elements.

LOVE, JANE is an adorably sweet and heartfelt LDS romance. Likable characters who come across as authentic, strong family relationships, and a happily-ever-after romance is sure to delight readers who enjoy the genre.

I loved how this story started right off in the middle of Jane's and Sean's budding relationship! I also enjoyed the switch in POV from one to the other as they try to see where their relationship might go. I wanted so much for things to work out for them! I adored Jane, even with her communication and trust issues. She's a sweetheart and had to learn some tough lessons, especially on her mission. Sean is such a level-headed guy, except... when he's not. Ha! He had a pretty good stretch where he frustrated me and where things felt quite off, but he redeemed himself in the end. They fit so perfectly together and I loved their chemistry and how they are best friends before anything else. You could just feel the emotion right through the pages.

One aspect of the story that made this so enjoyable was the family dynamic. Sean is really close with his sisters and dad as is Jane with her family. I loved the talks and the moments that were so meaningful between them. It all felt real with their struggles and hopes and dreams.

My only issues with the story would be all the red flags that Sean ignores and how much I did not like Victoria. I also would have liked more of the story to be when Sean and Jane are together. That would be all.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I really enjoyed this one and I'm hoping there's one more story coming to give DJ his happily-ever-after!

Cute book. I liked Jane a lot. I liked Sean about 90% of the time. And I wanted to punch Victoria the entire time she was in the book. The end.

Love, Jane is another hit for Ranee Clark. I have come to rely on Ranee for a fun, clean story with great characters. It took me a bit to really like Jane. Her hesitation and the time it took to tell Sean she was leaving on her mission was frustrating, but I felt it showed how much growth her character needed to achieve during the book and I was not disappointed in how Ranee pulled it off. Jane ended up being a great character who was finally brave enough to express herself and get what she wanted. I felt Ranee did a great job with Sean's reaction to Jane's mission call, I was glad he was upset as he was at first, as it was deserved. I did love how much thought was put into her final decision to go. I enjoyed how the story was split into sections. I felt it represented character growth and moved the story along well. One thing that is on my mind though, I felt there was too much given away in the book's description, but I still enjoyed it a lot. I will read anything from this author.

I love reading romance novels, but sometimes it seems too many of them read as too good to be true. So sometimes its good to read a romance that feels more like real life with the ups and downs, and problems and mistakes that real people struggle to overcome. Jane and Sean struggle with some of those issues. It's clear from the get go that they care about each other, but life isn't just about romance and Jane and Sean each struggle with their own weaknesses as well as the issues that their relationship faces. The biggest issue, at least at first, is Jane's desire to serve a mission. The fact that she waits too long to tell Sean she's going creates a lot of hurt for Sean to work through. Then while they both struggle with the realities of mission service (Jane) and working with teenagers (Sean) they also have to deal with a long distance relationship. Things seem to fall apart when Sean starts dating Victoria, and breaks up with Jane by email.

But Jane isn't the same girl she was before she went on her mission, and some things are worth fighting for. I loved that about Jane, the fact that she knew her weaknesses and worked hard to overcome them, despite the weak knees and pounding heart. Sean on the other hand is a great guy, but he too struggles to cope when his job goes downhill, and he cant seem to deal with missing Jane. When he grows to care for Victoria too, he's left with a dilemma. He can't keep promises to both girls and he feels really guilty because of it. The emotions of these characters felt very real to me with all the confusion and heartache they faced. Clark has created an enjoyable contemporary romance with real issues as well as real caring.

2.5 stars I liked the premise of this story, but I didn't love the execution. Jane is determined to go on a mission, so doesn't want to get too serious with Sean. Sean loves her and wants her to skip her mission to marry him. When Jane decides she has to go on her mission, Sean promises to wait for her.
Three months before her mission is over, Sean runs into an old friend. Victoria is VERY interested in Sean. She is pretty much a selfish, bossy and manipulative person--just like she has been in all the other books we have read about her. Sean is so lonely he falls for her charms and breaks up with Jane via email.
I guess I had a problem with the story because I could see how bad Victoria was for Sean. Everything was about what was best for her. Even when Sean says he has to meet with Jane in person because he owes it to her, Victoria doesn't want him to.
Thankfully it ends well, but it won't be a book I will re-read.

Gorgeous cover. Absolutes. No doubt. It's what made me pick it up and buy it. Did I love it? Not really, but it was a good read. Marketed for the LDS primarily, sometimes faith books can cross markets. I've read plenty other heavy Christian fiction before and gotten along just fine. I'm not sure others would understand our heavy dependence on prompting, and the influence of personal revelation. Or the wishy washy approach to life's major choices. I couldn't connect. Sean never had me convinced he loved Victoria either. I just wondered the whole time what he was doing. He seemed in a constant state of misery! None of the characters really grabbed my empathy until the last section in which Jane finally decides what she wants. The third part of the book is written so well. Plenty of emotion and character evaluation to be had. I enjoyed Nick's side story also.

There is growth to be had in serving a mission - and it was good for the LDS girls to have a book written about the agony of choice this can be for them. It is a choice after all and not an expectation, whether it's self imposed or not. I'm of the feeling though that you take time to look past the immediate here and now, when making these kind of decisions. Sometimes our choices are less about putting ourselves first right here, right now and what is right for our eternal happiness. I'm not sure of the message the author wanted to send here, whether it's the 'you can have it all' to the girls. Sometimes life doesn't work that way. When we sacrifice one thing we will have to live with the consequence. Overall, a good easy read, a bit of fun cheesy BYU/Provo/LDS romance, but not my favourite.

"Love, Jane" is a cute, romantic story that follows Jane and Sean's love story. Although this book is a specific Christian LDS book, I feel that most readers will enjoy the story.

Jane has been wanting for years to serve a mission for her church and submits her mission papers when she feels its the right time. Even after trying not to get serious, after months of dating Sean they both realize they love each other and want to get married. Jane has a hard time expressing her feelings to others and dealing with situations head on, so unfortunately over the years she has had bad relationships and experiences because she doesn't speak up. She ends up waiting to tell Sean about her mission papers and leave date only weeks before she leaves, which obviously affects their relationship in a negative way. However, Jane feels very strongly about serving her mission in Alaska and asks Sean to wait for her and he agrees.

Most of the book follows Jane's experiences while on her 18 month mission trip and their emails back and forth. With only a couple months before coming home Jane stops getting emails from her boyfriend and assumes the worst- that he's met someone else and he won't be waiting for her.

I liked reading about Jane's experiences while on her mission and trying to connect with her teaching companion while teaching others about God. I also liked reading about Sean's life and how close he was to his family and students at his high school teaching job.

I felt like the whole story was leading up to Jane and Sean's reunion, only to be disappointed that it was crammed into two chapters at the end of the book which felt very rushed. It did not leave me a very good impression of Sean and his wavering emotions and feelings back-and-forth between the two women he needed to choose from.

This was a quick romantic read which I did enjoy but was left feeling disappointed at the end.

I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.

Ranee’ S. Clark has written an engaging and funny story in her novel Love, Jane. It is about relationships, communication, and most of all love. This is a story that will speak to and touch the heart of readers as they relate it to their own lives and the people in them. Clark has a way of speaking to her readers that draws them in as if the story were truly happening. Emotions in the story will hit home with its readers as they come to know the characters and see the events of their lives unfold. Jane Reeves is in love with Sean O’Callaghan, but she wants to serve an LDS mission. They stay in touch, but can their long distance relationship last until Jane gets home? She must decide what she really wants and in the end if true love is really worth fighting for. I would recommend this story to readers that enjoy contemporary LDS romance novels.

This may be the kind of book that not everyone will be satisfied with, but it was so well-written, well thought-out, and endearing that I couldn't help but love it. Of course I questioned some of the decisions a few characters make, especially when But I loved all the flawed, real characters, the relationships between families, and most of all, the end. This is a love story unlike any other I've read!

This was such a clever twist on the "Dear John" story. I loved how the author flipped the usual "Dear John" story on its head. Both Jane and Sean were likeable, relatable characters. One thing I love about this author's novels is that they are all interconnected, so you can be read one alone or start at the beginning. Can't wait for the next one! Recommend to readers who like LDS Romance.

I really enjoyed reading this book! I loved everything about it, the characters, the plot, the setting. I didn't want to put it down!

Jane is such a strong character. She knows she's in love with Sean, but she also knows that she was given an answer that she needs to serve a mission. Sean doesn't really want her to, he's ready to get married and move on with their lives...together. Unfortunately, Jane has already turned in her papers and has her call. She's ready to leave right away and it's important to her to go. I love the way she's unswayed, even though she loves Sean and knows things may not turn out how she expected, she chooses to go.

I liked Sean too, he's always looking out for everyone around him. In a way it's a good thing, but it causes him some trouble as the story goes along. I mostly liked him, but there were parts when I just wanted to reach into the book and give him a big shake so he could see what was right in front of him!

I loved the way this book has several parts. Part 1 is before Jane's mission, Part 2 is during her mission and Part 3 is after she comes home. I loved being able to read their letters back and forth. I loved the way Jane had a question each week that she'd answer and ask Sean. Such a cute idea to really get to know someone better by getting into their head.

This book is cute, fun, clean and really amazing! Make sure to get your own copy to read!

This book was really cute. I ended up really liking both Jane and Sean by the end of the book (especially Jane, though). I have some problems with standing up to people, but not as much as Jane...I'm so glad that she learned how to work on it, and I also appreciated that she didn't figure it all out right away.

I would have liked to see more about Jane throughout the novel, but we ended up seeing more of Sean. I wanted to hear more about her mission and how that changed her, how her testimony grew, etc.

I thought the ending was a bit too easy. I liked it, of course, because it was cute and all, but I did feel like everything changed too quickly.

But it was cute and made me happy.

Sean O'Callaghan has fallen hard for Jane Reeves, but he's trying to take things slowly like she's asked him to. Still, he's not expecting it at all when Jane tells him she's planning to serve a mission--and as much he wants her to stay, she's determined to go. Sean agrees to wait for her, but 18 months is a long time, and while she's gone, he meets up with a girl he used to like and has to decide who he's going to be with--Victoria, who's actually there, or Jane, who is thousands of miles away.

This is the third of Ranee Clark's books that I've read, and I think it's my favorite. Sean was such a good guy--always wanting to the right thing and to help everyone. I liked Jane a lot, too, and I thought her difficulties in speaking up, especially when there might be confrontation, was well-developed. I like how Ranee Clark throws in some sports with her romances; that's a fun element. All in all, this is a fun book but also has some depth to it. I look forward to reading more from Ranee Clark.

I won a copy of this book in a giveaway. All opinions are my own.

Three and a half stars, really. It was an interesting book. Jane keeps way too many things to herself & won't speak up for fear of hurting someone else, & Sean doesn't seem to be able to make up his mind for fear of hurting someone else. That's the gist of the book. Personally I think they both need to be more decisive.

On another note, I was the girl that waited for a missionary, so to read a book where the guy waits for his girl missionary felt like "turnabout is fair play", so to speak. I also believe this stigma to waiting or not waiting & all the "socially accepted Mormon rules" that accompany it is so outmoded. People need to be free to choose for themselves what they will or won't do without worrying if their family, friends, & ward members will judge them for making the decisions that are right for them.

I picked this up off the "Lucky Day" shelf at the library, thinking it might be a nice, fluffy read in contrast to some of the heavier books I was also bringing home. I was right. It was a typical LDS fiction novel--light, sweet, a bit sappy, and predictable. As I was reading, I almost texted my sister when her name appeared in the first couple of chapters, spelled A-s-h-l-e-i-g-h, an unusual spelling for Ashley. Then I saw my brother-in-laws-name (DJ), my maiden name (Kaiser) and by the time my nieces' names showed up (Lexi and Mia), I had discovered that the book was written by my sister's sister-in-law, and she had used the names of her family (and mine!) as some of the book character's names. That made it extra-fun for me to read.

This is not the usual romance book. I feel like all start by meeting, then getting to know each other, than dating, then some mishap and they break up and then reconciliation. This was NOT like that! It starts out with them dating and I loved them both! And then she left on her mission and he was STUPID and started dating Victoria. I rarely hate characters, but I hated her! Loathed her. I didn't see what Sean saw in her other than she was there and pushy when he needed companionship. But I loved how it ended. And I love this author. I wasn't hugely fond of the deterred romance but I get it. I haven't been disappointed with anything Ranee has written and look forward to her next!

Jane loves Sean but she wants to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He waits for her until the last few months before she returns then starts dating Victoria and they get engaged. Jane has to be brave and tell him how she feels.

Who should Sean marry? the rich working woman who orders out or the sweet teacher who mothers him?

Very clean, no sex, violence or language.

Lots of kissing and warm feelings. He is a big cuddly football player and she is tiny and adorable.

I thought the story was okay but it wasn't very encouraging for a young woman thinking of serving a mission.

I thought this was going to be a little too cheesy (I really didn't like the first third!), but then I ended up staying up late to finish this one. The plot was pretty standard -- I think every reader knows from the get-go what "happily ever after" looks like -- but I still enjoyed watching Jane's character growth. Her non-confrontational nature ends up offending her boyfriend and then, later, her mission companion. I was cheering for Jane when she found the courage to speak up (in love!) and make things right.

The epilogue was back to cheesy again, but it was just two pages. ;-)

This book frustrated me to no end. First of all, there was not a lot of depth in the character's relationship. I never really got the why of why they were so in love. And poor Jane with her weakness of not being able to express yourself well, we all get that (I struggle with it as I write these reviews!) but really, there can only be so many paragraphs in a book about what you know you should say but can't because confrontation is scary.

I got confused with the ins and outs of the extra characters as well. I don't know, the whole story was just kind of... well, frustrating.

I really wanted to like this book but I had a hard time with it. Their relationship before was awkward. There wasn't a whole lot of seeing them get together, just hearing about it. Not actually seeing them fall in love made me not really invested in the story. Then Victoria... no love for her. She was so forward and no respect for his promise and relationship. She got all mad saying he promised to marry her but it was never brought up that he also promised Jane he'd wait for her. that he wanted to marry her. Sean couldn't seem to think for himself... I just had a hard time loving this one :(

This is one of those fluffy, fun romances that are easy to devour. I was frustrated with the main character, Jane, because she was so afraid to share her feelings. Ugh! I wanted to slap her upside the head a few times and say "what do you expect if you don't communicate?!" The ending was satisfying though so it's worth going through the painful process of watching Jane grow. This is geared towards an LDS audience, but I think anyone would enjoy it. It's a clean romance with nothing more than kisses.

The blurb of this book drew me in and it’s been awhile since I read a book with the a perspective of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints instead of just general Christian so I bought it.

I enjoyed it. I really loved Jane and Sean. I enjoyed their sweet romance and the discussions they had about their relationship.

I really disliked Victoria and who Sean became around her while Jane was on her mission.

I struggled with how Sean and Jane reconnected after her mission. There were just a few things I wish would have been different without giving spoilers.

I loved their sweet romance HEA and the epilogue was great.

I've gotten kind of frustrated with reading lately, too many so-so books and not enough home runs. This was the perfect remedy! I've loved Renee Clark's other books, but this one just perfectly fit my mood. I adored the small lessons that she wove in! I would have loved a bit more explanation as to the main man's switching back and forth, but all in all, I am satisfied and look forward to reading more from her!
