Wow! This must have been narrated then the author went back in and rewrote a lot of it. There was sooo many words changed and phrases erased or added I couldn’t believe it. Also, it’s time to get a little more imaginative when it comes to answers and replies, author. After a search on my iPad it says the word “said” was used 1000+ times in the 278 pages of this book. Yeah, that may have been a little too much. When something becomes repetitive it also becomes annoying after a while.

But mostly I loved this book. A just adore Crawford and Ott. The two stories of murder were great and I liked Rose. Even though she was a gossip she was definitely Crawford’s go-to gal for info on the millionaires and billionaires of Palm Beach. AND when everyone in PB wanted Knight Mulcahy dead it was quite the task finding the killer. Plus, the killer of the 21 year old American-Muslim. Poor kid, he really loved America, and that cost him his life.

There was not even a hint of closeness of anyone in this book that would make you think of sex but the F-bomb was used 37 times.

As to the narration: I don’t think I would have liked this book even half as much if I had just read it. The voices Phil Thron gave Crawford, low and sexy and the one he gave Ott, so gravelly it sounded like he was a two pack a day smoker were awesome. Every man in this book had his own voice BUT the women still kinda sucked. Really need to practice that Phil. However, the book was so good I could overlook that.

When there's a murder mystery around, I just can't wait to dive in. It is a perfect stimulant to the weary, bored mind and perks me up instantly. Palm Beach Deadly by Tom Turner is one such book. Although it is a part of a series, it is a standalone and an enjoyable one at that. After long I have come across a mystery so good, I feel I should do a mystery marathon and read all the ones in my wishlist. But, sadly, that will have to wait. Prior commitments, you see. Anyway, I think I should stop with my ramblings and get down to business. Right!

Detectives Charlie Crawford and Mort Ott are called upon when a wealthy talk show host, Knight Mulcahy from Palm Beach, is murdered. The body is found in the pool house with a bullet to his chest. Knight Mulcahy had debased so many guests through his show that putting an end to it all would have been an irresistible opportunity for anyone. Crawford and Ott, in a true homicide detective fashion, follow the leads and evidences to find the culprit. Could it be one of those whose dirty secrets Mulcahy had revealed? Or could it be someone in the family (for the money, of course!)? And then there is the mystery man who shows up at cocktail parties, uninvited - the man in the double breasted blue blazer. Meanwhile, an Arab's nephew gets killed in what looks like a car theft and Crawford and Ott are simultaneously trying to crack that case too. Through false alibis, revelations and twists, the story takes an unexpected turn and old skeletons are unearthed from the secret closets of many.

Palm Beach Deadly is a fast paced murder mystery. Right from the beginning, I was hooked on to the story. A no-nonsense, straight to the point narrative, which is highly appreciated. There isn't a dull moment in the book and the story just flows smoothly all the way till the end. It is a classic who-dun-it, with one murder and several suspects, but solved in a contemporary manner.

The main character is Charlie Crawford who is shown as a matter-of-fact guy, someone who enjoys his work. There isn't much detail into his character in this book, at least. Perhaps the earlier ones in the series brushed that part. But the absence of such a detail doesn't affect the story in any way. Mort Ott, another important character, is an older but a thorough cop. The relationship between the two results in a good partnership and makes for the light moments in the story.

As for my opinion, I thoroughly enjoy such fast paced mystery stories. And this one is no exception. A modern day mystery with the ever intriguing string of clues and suspects, what more can you ask for, eh?

Highly recommended.

Interesting story, but I found the characters, especially the main character, to be poorly developed and the dialogue to be...if not stilted, then also not particularly authentic. Felt either too long or too short. On the other hand, the plot was crisp and the overall setting or "feel" was well-done. Part of that might be that I'm a sucker for Florida settings, but that, to me, made the book worth reading and while I'll give the second book a shot (hopefully, his writing will have improved).

Charlie Crawford and Mort Ott were at it again in this third installment of the Palm Beach series. Oooh how I love these guys! What I love about this series is that it reads like an episode of Law & Order including the smart eleck banter “Lenny-isms” used by Ott. You’d have to have been a fan of L&O, the original series, to know what Lenny-isms are.

As in true fashion of Crawford, he receives the call that a pretty high-profile talk show host was murdered. It was up to him and Ott to figure out what the heck was going on. It’s one thing to investigate a murder, but to be in charge of the biggest murder to happen in a while to Palm Beach, Knight Mulcahy, sort of like your Howard Stern of radio, found dead in his pool house, with pants down around his ankles and a few bullet holes in the heart. Hmm, readers, we’ve got ourselves a hot murder!

If it wasn’t bad enough to have this murder case going, here comes another call regarding a young man killed in his uncle’s garage. Ott took the lead on this case and as he always does, he took to his trusty Google engine and went to work digging up all kinds of dirt on the victim’s family. As Crawford and Ott work together to solve both murders, they, as usual, hit quite a few stumbling blocks along the way. But, nothing that the two can’t handle.

These guys are as tough as nails, with a subtle easiness about them. I love these characters. There’s always something new and fresh to discover as you journey along with them. The humor in the series is to die for. I find myself laughing quite a bit at the conversations Crawford and Ott have. They truly are a fun duo to read, and I love the way they solve crimes. I can’t wait to get back into the series and press ahead and see what the two are up too. If you haven’t tried this series yet, I seriously would advise you do. It’s a great read with colorful characters and plenty of murder to go around! Enjoy!

There is a feeling you get when you become comfortable with something that before was new and unfamiliar. I had this feeling when reading all of Palm Beach Deadly. The third book in the Charlie Crawford mystery series, this book by far is the best in the series. To me, everything is perfect. The relationship between Crawford and Ott feels more natural. Through how they interact both on and off the case, it makes me feel like I could find a pair of detectives working in Palm Beach, Florida who are their spitting image. Crawford appears to fit into Palm Beach society. In the first two books, I felt the character's ability to fit in was missing. Now he fits in through how he interacts with Rose Clark, David Balfour and other cops at the Palm Beach Police Station. Another thing that has been perfected, is how Detective Crawford figures out his crimes. This has been achieved through the inclusion of a whiteboard found in his office. This makes the process in which his cases are solved more believable. Despite the inclusion of three separate cases in this book, they are all easy to follow and are wrapped out flawlessly. To anyone new to this series, I would recommend starting with this book and then read the other books in the series. Anyone who reads books belonging the crime genre will love this story.

Charlie and Mort into another fun adventure

Turner has turned out another winner in the Palm Beach series. Charlie Crawford and his side-kick Mort have to take time out from chasing women to figure out who-done-it when a murder takes place during a cocktail party. As they begin to identify suspects the list quickly grows. The victim unfortunately had few friends and a lot of good reasons why people wanted him dead. Charlie and Mort, with a lot of help from an unofficial deputy in a skirt, narrow down the list while managing to get into some hot action.

This series follows a formula that is a winner and falls into the category of humorous police procedural. The plot is rather secondary to the great characters, silly names, witty conversations and sexy innuendos that keep us laughing and coming back for more.

Two Murders and a Quasi-Terrorist Bombing....

Nice procedural with Palm Beach and its surroundings as one of the main characters.

An on-air personality is slain at his home during a party; the nephew of a wealth Saudi prince is gunned down in his uncle’s garage full of expensive and exclusive automobiles; and a plot to blow up a public building are all solved with dogged, step-by-step police work.

Nicely paced without any mind-boggling outrageous leaps of faith or outlandish intuition.

This wasn't one of my favorites. A local radio talk show host who isn't a nice guy ends up dead after a party at his own house. Every one's a suspect and it will take the determined investigation of Crawford and Ott to solve this one. Meanwhile the nephew of a local Saudi billionaire is found dead in the vast car collection.

Two unrelated, complicated cases to solve and Crawford & Ott are on the job.

The best part about it was the search for the mysterious Man In The Double Breasted Blue Blazer...

Enjoyed it

Third book in the series, and they have all been great. I hope the author keeps writing them, so I can get more of Charlie and Mort.

My only criticism is that this one needs a lot more proofreading. There were dozens of misspelled words and commas that were missing or in the wrong place.

Secrets Kill

Exciting reading about Charlie Crawford and his partner, Mort Ott, investigating the murder of a radio personality with a big mouth. His mouth is probably what got him killed. He had a habit of telling secrets and defaming friends, acquaintances and colleagues. I had fun trying to guess the murderer and it was who I least expected.

Palm Beach deadly rocks

No stopping this rollicking good time with bad guys everywhere and no leads for far too long. Charlie and Otto work had to get a handle on the rich guy death and then they uncover a big bad terror plot. Never a dull movement in this one and not mNy likable types either. Keep em coming.....

I hate cliffhangers and, therefore, I am not much of a series reader. This series has been very enjoyable as each of the books has been a stand alone mystery with no cliffhangers. Charlie Crawford and Mort Ott grow with each new case. I have downloaded the 4th book in the series and look forward to solving the next mystery soon.

Good guys are hard to find

Is it possible that there are any good guys in Palm Beach? Seems like everybody has a back story or a grudge. It really makes it hard to figure out just which one is the 'baddest' this time.

A must read author. Mr. Turned has created a believable chemistry between two detectives. The banner back and forth while tracking down a killer is entertaining to say the least. If you read one of the series.you will want more.

Palm Beach Deadly (Charlie Crawford Palm Beach Mysteries Book 3) - a review by Rosemary Kenny

How the other half live, in Palm Beach Deadly, Tom Turner's 3rd book in his Charlie Crawford Palm Beach Mysteries. Billionaires in million-dollar mansions, with exclusive golf and 'gentlemen's' clubs to relax in, flashy expensive cars, clothes and jewellery and carefree, (or are they?)luxury lifestyles, are contrasted with Homicide Detective Charlie Crawford's basic rental property, stressful and sometimes dangerous career, living off grab-it-while-you-can fast food and with no real time for romance. Yet it is Charlie and his dry-witted, sometimes snarky sidekick and partner, the curiously-named Mort Ott, who have to put their comparatively humdrum lives on hold to serve and protect their pampered social opposites and locals alike, when first Knight Mulcahy, a self-important Jeremy Kyle/Piers Morgan-type with his own chat show, is found shot to death post-coitally in his own pool-house, during one of his Gatsby-style parties for the the rich and not-so-famous.
Suspects aplenty, with grudges against their erstwhile host, are to be found among the music and media idols, rich entrepreneurs and more'regular' folk, like Rosie the realtor to the rich, (aka Charlie's,'girl with her pulse on the hip and happening' in Palm Beach, who gives him tips about what she learns while at viewings, parties etc). Nobody seems particularly upset by Mulcahy's demise - not even his 'gofer' son Paul, ('Pawn') or his wife, with whom he had an 'open' marriage.
Trawling through secrets and lies - and cctv footage - of the many suspects, takes all the PBPD's time and limited resources, causing stress and frustration to the max...only heightened when a Saudi Prince's nephew who was studying at a nearby college, is found shot to death, during what seems to be the carjacking theft of one of his highness' luxury sports cars.

How will Charlie Crawford and Mort Ott pull the department together, to give their utmost and clear up the many plots and sub-plots,whose resolution may make the literal and dangerous difference between life and death for the boys and girls in blue?

An exciting, climactic ending to Tom Turner's Palm Beach Deadly, will keep you reading long into the night to find out the answers to this 5-star winner, #3 in a great series you won't want to miss!

A Palm Beach radio shock jock hosting a party in his home is found dead with his trousers down in his pool house. There's no question but that he's been murdered.
But who could have done it, and why?
Just about anyone, up to and including his wife, because he had enemies aplenty.
A second brutal killing seems at first to be a car theft gone wrong but the dead man was Saudi Arabian and had some very strange acquaintances, think Skinheads and the Hitler Youth.
It is time for Detectives Charlie Crawford and Mort Ott to get stuck in.
And they do, interviewing potential suspects left, right and centre.
As with the previous books in the 'Charlie Crawford Mystery' series “Palm Beach Deadly” is, in the main, a solid police procedural.
Where it falls down is that it reads too much like the previous two books. Both Charlie and Mort are exactly the same without any evidence of personal growth.
I enjoyed reading it but I'll be taking a break from Charlie for a while.
3 Stars.

Homicide Detective Charlie Crawford and his partner Mort Ott are on a new case, two actually.
The first is the murder of Knight Mulcahy, who makes a living insulting people on his talk show.
Mulcahy was murdered at his own posh party; found with a bullet to the head and his pants around his ankles.
The problem is there are too many suspects. Most people hated him for his brash and needlessly brutally crass insults on the air.
The detectives doggedly follow the clues while digging up dirt on many in the Palm Beach community.
Meanwhile, there is another case of the murder of a Saudi prince's nephew and a missing Ferrari Testarossa.
A full cast of crazy, rich, entitled characters and the usual shenanigans amongst the stories of Palm Beach.
And a couple of detectives that persist until they get to the bottom of the crime. Charming and excellent detective series.

Two puzzling murders and the work that went into solving them...

Charlie Crawford and his partner, Mort Ott, are faced with two grisly murders to solve. They work together and go to their sources methodically until they discover who the guilty parties are. Well written and easy to follow.

A slow start...

...but the pace picks up. Readable, coherent plot , pretty good character development with a couple of instances of odd phrasing. Early on I think "equal to none" should have been "second to none". Further on there is the "secular equivalent to high school" - I'm pretty sure the secular equivalent to high school IS "high school" .
