You are living with two parallel realities, two parallel truths. Part of your experience in caregiving and living with a difficult condition is frustrating, maddening, depressing, and difficult. But this is not the only reality. At the same time, you may also experience beauty, love, peace, kindness, and courage.Easily, you will notice the more challenging aspects of your life. But, lean in to find the beauty as well. As you do, I hope you will join me in the valiant attempt to live with resilience. And thrive anyway.
I had the pleasure of meeting Bruce McIntyre Last Sunday when he spoke at our church. That is where I picked up his book.
This is an exceptional book for both those that have chronic illnesses (like me) and the caregivers. It is one of those books that was hard for me to put down.
I will reread and refer back to this book from time to time. The insights Bruce shared are spot on, from both sides. For patients and caregivers there is beauty and unpleasantness; as he puts it, "both/ and" (at the same time).
It is also loaded with great quotes from many others.
This is a book I highly recommend to all. One day you may find yourself in the roll of caregiver or patient, or "both/ and".
I wish I'd had this book to read when I was in the throes of an autoimmune disease diagnosis! McIntyre expresses all the emotions and thoughts and experiences that come with the struggles against chronic illnesses in such a way that gives beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness...hope. That's what this book offers: an open door to hope...not really a how-to or things-to-do~~just a reality-meets-perspective. He calls it "Both/And;" and if you are either the caregiver or the one dealing with a chronic illness, you will be strengthened and encouraged and renewed to "Thrive Anyway."
