Mountain Spirits

Rate this book
A door appears in the mountain cliff where a moment before there was nothing but rock. Out comes a strange man, unusually tall and dark, with no eyebrows. His clothes are magnificent but of an ancient style.

Since time beyond memory mountain spirits have appeared in the mountains and steppe of Khakassia in southern Siberia. They bring problematic gifts of gold and silver, animal languages, and musical talent, and they also separate people irrevocably from those they love. The sixteen tales in this book were told in the 19th and mid 20th centuries, and are published here in the original Turkic language and in English. Many of them reflect mythic themes of creation time, as well as Khakassia's shamanic culture.
