Dewey Webb appears in his first short story! Bartender Jerry Manco worries that his son Angelo is up to no good – not for the first time – and he asks for Denver private investigator Dewey Webb’s help. Dewey follows a series of leads and finds that Angelo’s embroiled in a dangerous situation, and Dewey will have to use all his skills to save him. This is a 10,000-word short in the Dewey Webb historical mystery series. It is set after Secrets and Lies in the timeline. A hard-boiled, historical mystery short story that's great for fans who love a traditional detective crime story with a noir flavor, but without a lot of sex or swearing. Dewey Webb first appeared in the Reed Ferguson mystery, Back Story. Pick up a copy of Back Story to find out more about this classic hard-boiled detective. Pawlish earns high marks for plot construction, with twists and turns naturally unfolding as Ferguson, inexperienced but not incapable, feels his way through the case. A good-humored mystery series worth following. 5 star Oh how I’ve missed the Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe characters that saw me with a flashlight in the dead of night flipping pages to see what happened next. Thank you Ms. Pawlish for bringing back to life this long-lost art of the detective battling against all odds and getting to the bottom of things. - Maureen with zencherry book reviews The Reed Ferguson mystery • Book 1: This Doesn't Happen In The Movies • Book 2: Reel Estate Rip-off • Book 3: The Maltese Felon • Book 4: Farewell, My Deuce • Book 5: Out Of The Past • Book 6: Torch Scene • Book 7: The Lady Who Sang High • Book 8: Sweet Smell Of Sucrets • Book 9: The Third Fan • Book 10: Back Story • Book 11: Night of the Hunted • Book 12: The Postman Always Brings Dice • Book 13: Road Blocked • Book 14: Small Town Focus • Book 15: Nightmare Sally • Book 16: The Damned Don't Die • Book 17: Double Iniquity • Ace in the Hole • Walk Softly, Danger • short Elvis And The Sports Card Cheat • short A Gun For Hire • short Cool Alibi • short The Big Steal • short The Wrong Woman Private Investigator Mystery Series - Mystery Series - Private Investigator Series - Crime Fiction - Crime Series - Private Detective Novels - historical mystery, thriller & suspense fiction - pulp - hard-boiled - noir - detective - private eye - traditional - historical mysteries - short stories

Very short story

Renee Pawlish took us back to the times when there was phone booths and typewriters. Also men really wear hats. Dewey is hired to find out his Italian bartender's son is up to. This very short story left me wanting more.

Dewey Webb is back with another short book detailing one of his PI cases. This time he is hired by concerned parents  when their adult son (who has had skirmishes with the law in the past) begins to act suspiciously. Dewey does what he does best-follows, observes, intimidates, and gets to the heart of the matter.

I enjoy these stories because of the authenticity in describing a simpler and less technological time in the course of investigations. Careful research on the part of the author results in an authentic post WWII private investigator. Dewey reminds me of an old noir PI seen in black and white films. This was another example of his good detective work flavored with compassion. I highly recommend this series and this book!

When Jerry Manco, owner of Jerry's bar asks Dewey to check into what his son, Angelo is up to. Angelo hasn't been following his usual routine at home as of late, and since he got into trouble for stealing from his boss before his dad is worried. Dewey follows him around for a few days and finds that his father's worries are warrented. Can Dewey help Angelo see the error of his ways or will Angelo have to find out the hard way? Read the book to find out. I received ARC of this book, but the review is entirely voluntarily my own.

The latest Dewey Webb is too short by far, that's the problem with short stories. Dewey Webb is an experienced PI, with a military background. Pawlish pays great attention to detail and gets everything right. I received an advance reader copy of this book from the author.

I was completely engrossed in this short story to the end. Renee Pawlish's writing draws a person into the story as a participant with efficient details of characters, settings, actions and so on. A short mystery written like a novel as it lacks nothing in this dynamic tale. It takes about an hour, maybe less, to read. It will be the shortest hour you've ever experienced.

A great addition to the Reed saga.

Ms Pawlish has come through again. Reed and the gang are back and the mystery is as good as ever. I'm continually amazed at how Ms Pawlish can keep the series fresh and interesting. If you like noir, or mysteries, or just good story telling, you'll like this book.

The mystery hits a little close to home when Dewey Webb helps out a friend, bartender Jerry Manco, in this short novella that packs a lot of story in a few chapters. Jerry believes his son is embroiled in some nefarious doings and Dewey becomes involved more deeply than he at first imagined. These shorter stories make a nice contrast to the longer novels and give you a little insight into some of the quicker, side jobs that this private investigator becomes involved in. Great little read.

Great period piece with a solid ending

Dewey Webb isn't your classic private detective. He has a wife and a baby boy to come home to after a hard day's work. He is sensitive enough to know when his wife needs a break from placating a teething baby. These things help to make him a better than average detective. I really enjoyed reading this short story.

Great short story from Renée Pawlish. I enjoyed this story about the private investigator who is looking for a young man up to no good on the request of the man's father.
Well written and worth reading if you like film noir type books. It is not too serious and easy to read, nothing vulgar.
