Excellent Police Procedural, HOWEVER . . .

I almost gave it 1 star. See below for the “however.”

This is a well-written police procedural with an intricately plotted storyline. Detectives gradually learn that they hunt a prolific serial killer who knows how to thwart the police and forensic investigators.
The protagonist and police characters are intelligent, driven and likable, so I enjoyed following the investigation. I had to suspend disbelief when reading about the murderer, his areas of expertise and his motives.
This book needed a copy editor for punctuation and grammar errors.

Here’s the HOWEVER: I had to stop reading numerous times to decipher misspellings, contractions and pronunciations used by the author to represent Black English or African-American Vernacular. See example below:
“Yeah, but nobody be telling me no’ting. I hear we got ‘nother murder. Some reporter done tole me, befo I hear it from you.”
The female police employee speaks this way throughout the book. This may have been acceptable 150 years ago, but it’s 2018.

This would have been a solid 4 star book, but I almost gave it 1 star. Fortunately my left brain (mostly) prevailed.

I really enjoyed this book. It is about a retired NYC detective, Jeb, that goes to Florida to be a homicide detective, but on his first day in town he is called into a murder and becomes acting Chief of Police. Unknown to Jeb he has a history with this killer. Not sure if this is a series, but I think it would make a great one.

New author to me.

You never know what you are getting in a free book. This author took me by suprise! I enjoyed this read. The book had enough suspense to keep me guessing and was not drawn out with petty details. I will be downloading the next book in this series.
