The Landmark Books for children are a great way to learn history! I can't say enough about these, and it's no wonder that they are highly sought after in the homeschool community. From what I’ve researched, I’ve found these books to be very historically accurate. It’s history told in nicely narrated story-form – a win!
Ages: 10+
Pages: approx. 175-200
Illustrations: some
Price Range: $4 – $125 depending on HC or PB, and the title and its rarity.
Cleanliness: Mentions alcoholic drinks and some people getting drunk. A married woman is in love with Bolivar and attends to him often as nurse.

The Landmark Books for children are a great way to learn history! I can't say enough about these, and it's no wonder that they are highly sought after in the homeschool community. تسلیم ناپذیریش واقعا تحسین برانگیز بود. جالب اینکه این همه تلاش کرد تا آمریکای جنوبی رو از استعمار اسپانیا در بیاره و تقریبا یک جمهوری درست کرد ولی خود مردم آمریکای جنوبی باعث تجزیه شدند.
"جمهوری هایی که او تاسیس می کرد به مجرد خروج او از هم گسیخته می شد. حتما وجود او برای حفظ اتحاد و اتفاق آنها لازم بود".
چقدر هم از طرف دوستانش و کسانی که سیمون بولیوار بهشون مقام داده بوده مورد خیانت قرار گرفت ( متاسفانه خیلی وقت ها اینجوری بوده). با اینکه خیلی جنگید ولی طرز فکر بسیار متعالی داشت.
" افکار بولیوار نیز از زمان خود جلوتر بود. وی معتقد بود که بردگی را می توان لغو کرد و اطمینان داشت که همه ملل چه بزرگ و چه کوچک می توانند اختلافات خود را دور یک میز حل کنند و مخصوصا در آمریکای جنوبی می توان برای حل اختلافات مرزی به جای جنگ به عقل سلیم متوسل شد.
چنین عقایدی را بسیاری از اشخاص دیگر نیز داشته اند. کمال مطلوب فلاسفه، دنیایی است که از نفرت، کینه، و بی عدالتی اثری در آن نباشد و تمام ملل و افراد از روی عقل و بصیرت کار کنند. ولی نه فلاسفه و نه اشخاص دیگری که چنین دنیایی را آرزو کرده اند، در وضعی نبوده اند که بتوانند افکار و عقاید خود را به محک تجربه بزنند. بولیوار از چنین موقعیتی برخوردار بود، اما معاصرانش آنطور که باید و شاید از وی پشتیبانی نکردند و در اثر تردید و دو دلی آنان کنگره پاناما در سیر تاریخ کوچکترین اثری پدید نیاورد".
نتیجه ایی که هم میشه گرفت از این کتاب این است که همیشه یک نیاز به یک رهبر خوب کافی نیست. مردم نیز باید به درک و شعور لازم رسیده باشند.
سوالی که برام پیش میاد این است تا در وجود هر انسانی میل به قدرت، پول و مقام و شهرت هست می توانیم جامعه ایی با صلح و آرامش داشته باشیم؟
قسمت هایی دیگر از کتاب که برای من جالب بود:
ونزوئلاییها از ما دوری می جستند. ما میخواستیم آزادی را به ایشان هدیه کنیم ولی آنها حتی خیال قبول کردن آن را هم نداشتند، ما نمی توانستیم آزادی را به آنان تحمیل کنیم.
سرباز جدید و تازه کار پس از یک شکست بکلی روحیه خود را از دست می دهد، تجربه هنوز به او نشان نداده است که با نیروی پشتکار، مهارت و تهور می توان بر بدبختی ها غلبه کرد.
بولیوار در عین آن که مرد عمل و کار بود همیشه در عالم تخیلات به سر می برد. وی مثل شخصیت افسانه ای و محبوب خود دون کیشوت در عالم رویا تمام عیبهای دنیا را اصلاح می کرد. به نظر او اگر کنگره ای از ملل صلحدوست تشکیل می شد راه برای اصلاحات آینده باز می گردید. و اگر مردم اسپانیایی زبان آمریکا در این کار پیشقدم می شدند، ملل دنیای قدیم دیر یا زود از آنها پیروی می کردند.
کریستف کلمب، در سفر دریایی خود به چین، تصادفا دنیای جدید یعنی قاره ی آمریکا را کشف کرد. هفت سال بعد، یکی از همراهانش، ستوان «آلونثو د اوخدا» سفر دریایی خود را با توجه به مسیر پیشین طی شده، به سمت جنوب دنبال کرد. همراه ایشان تاجری بود اهل فلورانس، به نام: «آمریکو وسپوچی». این دو نفر، در مسیر خود به دهکده ای متعلق به سرخ پوستان رسیدند، و «اوخدا» با دیدن آن دهکده، که در آب، روی تیرهای چوبی بنا شده بود. به یاد «ونیز» افتاد، و آن را «ونزوئلا» یا «ونیز» کوچک نام نهاد. «آمریکو وسپوچی» به مجرد بازگشت به اروپا، در باره ی سفر دریایی شرحی نوشت و تمام کشفیات را به نام خود تمام کرد. چند سال بعد، یک نقشه کش آلمانی، که در یکی از دانشگاههای فرانسه کار میکرد، تحت تاثیر داستان کشفیات او، پیشنهاد کرد که قاره ی مکشوفه را به نام او «آمریکا» بنامند. پیشنهاد، باعث شد تا دنیای جدید را آمریکا نام نهادند.

In the 1950's and 1960's Random House created an extraordinary history series for children called Landmark Books. There were 122 books in the American history series and 63 in the World Landmark series. A very solid description of the series can be found here: link. When I was a kid my little hometown library had what seemed like an endless shelf of these books (I even remember where it was in the library nearly 40 years later). Undoubtedly, these books are part of the reason I am a history teacher.
This book is part of a subset of the Landmark Books series. If the book took place outside of the United States the book belonged to the World Landmark Books series.
Simon Bolivar was born in the Spanish colony that is now Venezuela. He was educated in Spain but was keenly aware that the government of Spain considered the colonies to be inferior to Spain and incapable of self-government. He doubtless shared that belief until he began to spend time with the children of the Spanish ruling class (including the future King of Spain) and discovered that they weren't all that impressive. Once Napoleon conquered Spain and put his brother on the throne, Bolivar pushed for a revolt. Some, like Bolivar, were pushing for independence no matter who was on the throne, but others who joined him simply wanted to revolt as a part of a general resistance to Napoleonic rule.
Regardless of the initial motivations, Bolivar soon led a multi-colony revolt that went on for 11 years. Eventually, Bolivar helped to liberate the colonies that make up the modern countries of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru.
Many have compared Bolivar to George Washington, including Arnold Whitridge, the author of this book. There are surface similarities, but Bolivar's fight was...

This is a fascinating biography of the South American Washington. This book clearly demonstrates between Britain and America and the rest of the world. In the rest of the world, they have one great Caesar, or Luther, or Bolivar who takes them to prominence, but America and Britain had groups of men who didn't love power, but only love their nation and their religion. Washington was able to work with Franklin, Madison, Jefferson, both Adams, Revere, and so many other to make the nation, but South America only had Bolivar who had to fight his whole life greedy and factitious generals his whole life. Even Bolivar himself loved power, unlike Washington. This is the principle difference. A nation can never be made by one man, no matter how great he be.

I usually rate these Landmark books as about average but this one stands out from the rest for a mostly personal reason. I listen to poscasts a lot and I was preparing to dive into the story of Simon Bolivar on the Revolutions Podcast. Revolutions is sometimes weighty and I wanted to use this book as a primer to warm me up for the almost 20 episodes. It was spot on. The abridged version of the complete South American fight for freedom was as much as most people need to speak intellegently on the subject. The podcast then served to fill in the details and I never lost my place in listening after I had this under my belt.

I would have liked more every-day life info and less war coverage, but that is probably unfair to ask of a book about Simon Bolivar. Since I knew nothing at all about him and very little about South America, this was an enjoyable read.
This whole series provides an excellent introduction to history topics. Perfect for late elementary or middle school readers or for high schoolers or adults who want an easy book that reads better than an online article.
