Christopher Vogler is a Hollywood development executive, screenwriter, author and educator, best known for working with Disney and his screenwriting guide, The Writer's Journey: Mythic Structure For Writers, from 2007.
Very brief. Not sure how helpful it would be if you didn't already have an idea of Jungian archetypes or if you haven't read Joseph Campbell.
But it's a nice reminder nevertheless. If you're currently writing or outlining, it might be a nice, short refresher to help stir up the old creative juices.
I think the main issue is that it's sort of an audio recording taken from a live workshop and in the beginning, there are diagrams which you obviously miss out on while listening to the audio and not having access to visuals.
Continues in the tradition of Joseph Campbell and elaborates on some of the themes, taking more modern examples from television and movies.
He speaks from the viewpoint of a Hollywood development executive who has read countless scripts and has come across all types of issues in writing.
I recommend you to get familiar with Campbell's work before this, since his work is more in-depth and some of the background isn't given during this lecture.
Even though this lecture takes a more cinematic approach there are still a lot of great lessons to be learned, very worth checking out if you want to expand on the works of Joseph Campbell.
I'm sure a million other people mentioned that this is a streamlined and summarized version of Campbell's Hero of a Thousand Faces, but I read it anyway because maybe that was exactly what I needed. A simple reminder of a simple tool. Not bad, not great, but at least it was informative to the point of jogging my memory.
This seminar is basically Joseph Campbell's The Hero's Journey for Dummies. That is not meant to be a total putdown. The Hero's Journey is essential for anyone who wants to write good fiction either in screenplay or novel format. This book works as an introduction to this writing method. It could also be helpful to someone who has studied the Campbell method and just feels like they need a refresher. However, the seminar does not give enough information to work as a replacement for studying the real thing.
I listened to these audiobooks during my morning walk and it caused me to walk faster because as I was listening I thought of all the ways that I can improve the novel that I'm writing. After reading about the hero's journey and then listening to Christopher Vogler explain with clear examples how to make characters and stories richer, I "think" that I'm making my book that much more interesting of a read and expanding and the world that much more intriguing to spend time in.
Um excelente worshop do Christopher Vogler, com uma espécie de sumário dos temas abordados em seu bestseller, a Jornada do Escritor! Recomendo para todos interessados em estruturas míticas aplicadas à escrita! Muito bom!
This was really a recording of a seminar/lecture by Vogler disseminating Campbell’s monomyth and how it applies to writing, though primarily movie writing. It’s a good, relatively short listen with plenty of extra examples and tidbits.
Great if you’re new to story structure and haven’t read many other books on writing or screenwriting. But if you have, this may be too basic in its insights. Although a good refresher if you’re rusty.
This was a great and very brief refresher on Vogler's The Writer's Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers. Perfect for listening to when you're in the midst of writing a story and need a little extra inspiration.
This "book" is actually a live recording of a conference Vogler presented at and also includes Q&A from the session. His main focus, in this talk, is story structure and character archetypes. In the Q&A, he also delves a good bit into theme.
This series brings writer conference and classroom seminar experience to the rest of us. While I've learned much from the others in this series, none as much as this. While the topic is a familiar one, the hero storyline and archetypes as illuminated by Joseph Campbell, this seminar is fresh and delightful. A trifecta of great material presented by a master of story delivered to an intelligent and interactive audience.
Vogler's lectures provide a good introduction to Joseph Campbell's work on the Hero's Journey. He's a charismatic guy, and while fun, the lecture is by no means comprehensive. Vogler talks about the different stages that a hero goes through - call to action, the return, that kind of stuff. Still, this has now whetted my appetite for Joseph Campbell and I plan to get to that soon.
