Double, or.... Something For the most part of his life, Jack Anderson has been plagued by a mysterious disease that makes him a weakling and unable to live the normal life of a teenager. Over the summer, he is shipped off by his parents to a special hospital located in a remote desert-like area where he is to undergo a groundbreaking treatment. After enduring months of questionable medical experiments performed by a group of doctors who are supposed to help him get better but in reality are keeping him sick on purpose all in the name of medical research, Jack escapes from the clandestine medical facility and heads for home. While Jack was being experimented on against his will, a clone of himself named Hyde was sent to his hometown as an imposter. Enter Jack’s good friend Kayle — “The Freakazoid” — and Claire — Jack’s longtime girlfriend — who begin to see the chinks in facade. To complicate matters, Hyde can’t stand the sight of Claire and begins to develop romantic feelings for Kayle. When Jack returns home, he comes face to face with his clone and while at first the two boys can’t stand the sight of one another, they soon stumble upon the plan to destroy them both and become allies to fight for their right to co-exist.
Yes, I've changed my pen name. If you're redirected here after looking up one of my old books, that's why. Rather than rebuild my profile here on Goodreads, I've simply decided to combine my books into one place.
Who am I?
I am Cloud S. Riser and I'm a storyteller. Step into my worlds. There is a little bit of everything. Romance, mystical creatures, bizarre new worlds, and great adventures.
I'll admit, I didn't actually read the synopsis before diving into this book. I'm kind of glad for that. I had no idea what was going on at all and so I got to watch everything unfold without any preconceived notions. I absolutely LOVED this book. It had mystery, intrigue, a little romance, teenage angst, and even some comedy. Ms Riser has me hooked - I am eagerly anticipating the next installment in The Tracings Series.
This book is set up with four different points of view - which can be fairly tricky to pull off. Jack, Hyde, Kayle, and Claire each share their parts of the story. They each have a distinct voice which is critical when writing from multiple perspectives. Jack writes in first person, where Hyde writes in third person. While both boys are supposedly genetically the same, they have very distinct personalities that come through in their voice and their actions. Kayle writes in first person blogging and Claire writes in first person in her diary. The styles are appropriate for each girl's personality. I loved getting to know each of the characters not only through their actions, but through their individual perspectives.
While this is definitely a YA book, I would think many readers would find Jack & Hyde a compelling read.
FYI ~ Clean read. Some mild language and discussion of intimacy, but no intimate scenes. Honest disclosure ~ I received a review copy from the author.
This is a wonderful tale of mystery and intrigue. It follows the lives of four people, Jack the perfect and popular guy but he's deathly ill. Hyde, the new mysterious boy. Kayle the outcast and Claire the other half of Jack's perfect couple.
Jack is nice. He's too perfect for me but I look forward to seeing the changes in him. I really like Hyde. He's just trying to figure out who he is in this crazy world. I like Kayle too. She is genuine, what you see is what you get. She's brutally honest when she needs to be even though she tries to stay invisible. Then there's Claire. I don't like Claire. She's manipulative, rude, controlling. She's the ultimate mean girl. However, I feel that her character will have a lot of development in the sequel.
There are so many twists and turns in this book. It keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat. I am anxiously waiting for the next book in this series!! This is so good!!
Reminiscent of the original Jekyll and Hyde story — that of a doctor’s good and bad sides becoming separate persons — Jack and his clone Hyde aren’t exactly the same, and they each have different personality traits that stand out.
Jeeez this took me a while to get through! So, first of all, this book was sent to me by the author in exchange for an honest review. And here we go: Jack & Hyde is an interesting and intriguing novel that has one too many uneccessary details. ~ PLOT: Double, or.... After enduring months of questionable medical experiments, Jack escapes from the clandestine medical facility and heads for home. While Jack was being experimented on, his mew found twin, named Hyde, was sent to his hometown as an imposter. Enter Jack’s good friend Kayle — “The Freakazoid” — and Claire — Jack’s longtime girlfriend — who begin to see the chinks in facade. To complicate matters, Hyde can’t stand the sight of Claire. When Jack returns home, he comes face to face with his twin and while at first the two boys can’t stand the sight of the other, they soon stumble upon the plan to destroy them both and become allies to fight for their right to co-exist. ~ So, my digital copy has 322 pages and 2/3 of it, it's about the everyday life of the kids and almost leading to nothing, ALMOST, be careful, because here and there is placed some piece of information that makes the story go on, but realistically talking, this feels more like a very long prequel to the real book. The interesting things are at the end, and they're rather left there like.... "SO??" ~ On the other hand, I loved the characters: Jack and Hyde have completely different behaviors. Claire is a double faced character, and I loved that about her. The parent of the kids are extremely important in the plot and they are so authentic that it's almost scary. Only Kayle is rather set aside. She appears every so often and her role in the story is really limited. ~ Anyway, I liked the plot. I would have developed it faster, but I mean... Author's choices, right? I recommend this book to all those readers who are out there looking for a light sci-fi, with little romance in it!
If you thought high school was tough to navigate, try to figure out all that this collection of adolescents will manuever. Central to the story is Jack Anderson, who has grown up with the other kids and came to be accepted by them as the sick kid, the weakling. Under some strange set of circumstances he also became the boyfriend to Miss Popularity, Claire. From the very first pages where Jack is literally running for his life to the final pages where you'll be holding your breath unsure what will happen next, this book will hold your attention and keep you guessing. It deals with emotions and deception, and science that may not all be fantasy. The author uses a very difficult-to-pull-off approach of telling the tale from four alternating viewpoints. The reader must piece together what has happened along with what is happening and who can be believed and trusted. Your mind will not rest while it puzzles out fitting the pieces together. As Jekyll and Hyde were two sides of one personality, are Jack and Hyde parts of the same person or totally different entities? Sci-fantasy adventure drama.
