The third book in the Seaside Practice Trilogy which started with A Seaside Practice and continued with Going Loco, we follow the further adventures of Dr Tom as he returns to his native Ayrshire to set up a business and take on Locums - as ever life is never simple, with murders, mayhem and colourful characters peppering his tales.
Tom has written three memoirs, and this is probably his last. His stories are quite interesting, and this book may contain his best ones. The medical cases, in themselves, are interesting, but so is the arc of his career. Entertaining and interesting.
Quite dry compared to the previous books, with less "country doctor" charm. There's also an odd book report vibe as Smith explains the virtues of a book which inspired him.
While there are some really interesting stories, later, in this third book of Dr Smith’s I didn’t appreciate Medic on the Move initially as much as the previous two books; I couldn’t quite put my finger on why … listening to him read these stories definitely added to the whole experience of the initial odd tone, then enjoyment. Once I got past our rocky start, just after the stories surrounding Rock Hudson, things seemed to improve and I settled in for an interesting and informative listen as the Doctor and his wife set off around the world collecting interesting stories to tell.
Extra: a few risqué and mature in content stories would have had me wishing I'd listened through this audio first, especially if I'd decided to have this as a car time audio with littlers in the car. (A descriptive retelling of walking in a on couple having sex; an excerpt about a nyphomaniac woman and her equally nyphomaniac teen daughter; a tale of attempted mariticide and one of uxoricide.)
