The Execution of Jesus the Christ

Rate this book
For seventy years, we have been taught that Jesus died on the cross from asphyxiation (strangulation) because in the hanging position he was unable to exhale. This theory is not based on sound science. This book explains the medical cause of Jesus's death and why even Pilate was surprised how soon Jesus had died. The dramatic changes that took place in Jesus's body from the Last Supper until death are described in layman's terms. To add to the injustice, Jesus's condemnation to death was illegal under the Jewish law of his time--a fact supported by a review of the political and religious dynamics.

Overall a good read from a heart surgeon with his evidence presented as to the cause of Christ's death medically. He makes a good case for what he presents over what was presented in some older books.

Although this book goes beyond just a medical examination of the scourging and crucifixion, but a summary of the history of the times and some of the theological underpinnings of Christ's death. Some of this information was necessary in his conclusions - mostly provided as background information. The weakness of the book is that some conclusions presented (non-medical ones) have other possible solutions and should have been presented less as certain conclusions. He does draw on some of Pope emeritus Benedict XVI Jesus of Nazareth series where the former Pope does exactly that.

Overall rather interesting.

Wonderfully concise and accessible. Appropriate for layman and minister alike. Dr Kubala lends so much context to Calvary, that it’s impossible not to find a desper appreciation for the Lord’s Passion. He theorizes the ultimate cause of our Savior’s death to be blood loss (and as a result, cardiac arrest) rather than the most oft cited “asphyxiation,” with a fair amount of medical and historical evidence. In doing so, he shines a light on the deep significance of Christ’s blood, and His willingness to pour it out freely. Fair warning: this book is brutal. However, that discomfort is, after all, the point.

Dr. Kubala did an exceptional job on his research and theory of the crucifixion and death of Christ. The diagrams of the city and temple helps imagine more clearly how things were set up at that time. He explains the history of the times, the customs of the people, and the different levels of the government. With his expert medical knowledge he shed a new light on my previous thoughts of the crucifixion. It's heart wrenching to think of the real mental and physical torture and suffering that Jesus endured for our salvation. I will never think of the crucifixion in the same way again. I would highly recommend reading this book to everyone. It's life changing.

I expected the detail to be more gruesome to be honest. I expected to be quite emotional reading this as I was during the movie the Passion of the Christ. However, it read more like a text book. I did learn a few things in the history and timeline portions, so that was good. It was a short read, and I’m glad I read it.

An excellent overview of the crucifixion. Not only medically, but the author also gives a great overview of important history and cultural norms that helps put the crucifixion in its historical context. I highly recommend it.

Helpful as a reflection for understanding and appreciating what Jesus actually went through on his way to Calvary. It also acts as a wonderful focus for praying the rosary or the Stations of the Cross.

Very well written so that the lay person could understand. New chilling information about the Death of Christ.

Great and profound description

I loved the detail of the background research as well as the description of Jesus’s suffering. It’s a humbling reminder of the depths of God’s love for us and a calling to a deeper faith
