The Prince of Tennis, Vol. 5 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next eight chapters (35–42) of the on-going manga series with a special short story.

The Tokyo District Preliminary Tournament Finals has Seishun Academy and Fudoumine Middle School playing against each other. It concludes with Ryoma Echizen winning his match, but it was a hard won one.

As the punishing battle of skills unfolds, Echizen develops a muscle paralysis called "Spot," which leaves him with barely enough strength to grip the racket, much less swing it. Furthermore, his opponent could replicate his infamous Twist Serve and Echizen is injured when his racket rebound and hurt his eye. However, Echizen isn't going to go down without a fight, Ryoma unleashes a "two-sword fighting style" technique that only talented, ambidextrous players are able to execute.

The last two chapters are dedicated to Nanjiro Echizen - the father of Ryoma Echizen. If Ry0ma Echizen is the Prince of Tennis, than his father would be the King.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Takeshi Konomi. The tankōbon concludes the Tokyo District Preliminary Tournament with Ryoma Echizen giving Seishun Academy winning three matches to their one. Fortunately, it won't be the last time we see Fudoumine Middle School as runner-up they are seeded in the Tokyo Prefecture Tournament.

All in all, The Prince of Tennis, Vol. 5 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

5/5 (Review is for the series as a whole and does not contain spoilers)

This series follows 7th grader Ryoma Echizen as he strives to become the number one tennis player at his junior high school. Throughout the series, Ryoma faces off against numerous opponents, each one stronger than the last, in an effort to help lead his tennis team to becoming the champions of the National Tennis Tournament.

This series is a cute, action packed story about some junior high school students playing tennis. No prior knowledge of tennis is necessary, as the author takes the time to explain how certain shots are executed and briefly mentions which professional tennis players may use those shots. As the story progresses, some of the tennis shots get a bit more unrealistic and overly dramatic, but it adds to the excitement and builds tension. (So note that if you are an avid tennis player, it might seem a bit out there in terms of realism.) This is a great series for people who enjoy sports manga, and who enjoy competition, as the boys in this manga continue to push each other to new heights in their skills. There are also some good lessons in the story that teach the readers about having fun and continuing to persevere even when things get tough. It also teaches readers that sometimes we lose, and that’s okay too. In terms of age ratings, I would say that this series is a safe one for those in middle school, or perhaps even a bit younger. Overall, I really enjoyed this manga for its low stakes, fun action, and enjoyable cast of characters.

I'm sorry folks, I tried really liking this series. I really did. But I just can't find myself investing in this story or these characters.

One of the main problems is the sports story. It's just a bunch of high school boys with a talent for tennis and they play in competitions against other teams. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate people who play sports at all. I actually praise people for studying in school and maintaining their sport skills at the same time. High fives for those folks.

But it's just not my thing. If this was a story like Glory Road, Radio, or The Blind Side then I would like it a little bit better. But these ones don't do it for me, which is a shame because this manga has excellent ratings.

A couple of the characters were likable. Like Ryoma and Momo. They had personalities and I didn't find them boring. But some of the other characters were memorable by their tennis techniques and skill, NOT their character.

Some of the tennis techniques are pretty cool and some of the jokes are made from the audience treating a game like a battle field. But then when Ryoma and Momo play doubles and the coach made them sit on their knees. I know it was suppose to be a joke but . . . I didn't get it.

Overall, it's not bad. I just don't much care for it anymore.

At the time of this review, I read volumes 5-7 back-to-back.

Now that I am thinking about it you know what this reminds me of? The manga Dragon Voice. It was this older manga about a boy band, but they also talk about singing and different types of voices. Prince of Tennis is like that. We have players with different skills and styles that have names. In other news, Ryoma's Dad is a beast! For someone who is older now, he still has it. He also has the older guru feel, because he knows that his son is not at his level, yet. Also it is interesting that they are two manga that make references to historical warriors/soldiers. Here we have Samurai Nanjiro and in Haikyuu!! we have Ninja Shoyo.

Verdict: This was entertaining!

YAY! We finally get to see Ryoma play a match!

This review is more for my notes than anything else.

I'm on the hunt for manga that I can put in my school library.

I can't put anything in that has too much swearing or any sex in it so it's REALLY hard to find middle/high school manga that fits the bill.

But this series works! No swearing/profanity in this one.

The only problematic scene here is that Ryoma's father is reading a porno mag when reporters visit him at his house. Could have done without that!

We finally get to see a little bit of downtime for the boys. I was getting a little tired of the endless tennis matches, I wanted to see a bit of the boys' home lives, so I'm glad we finally got to catch a glimpse! (specifically Taka's family's restaurant, as well as a bit about Echizen's dad who used to be a tennis prodigy)

Ryomo's first macth was a blast. Playing Shinji from Fudomine in a classic game.

I really liked the added short story in this volume and learning that Ryoma was originaly planned as the antagonist of the series.

Honestly, I'm just not impressed with the whole "child prodigy kicks everyone's butt constantly" shtick. I can't remember but I hope the kid starts finding opponents who are worthwhile.

I finnished reading all of Prince of Tennis that the school had to day. Initally I was reluctent to read it for I have poor momories of camp in which I was required to play tennis against my will. Apon actully reading it I must agree with Carolyn's explination "Yes it is about tennis but it is epic tennis". It was like reading other fighting mangas. It is dramatic in that it is like "Oh, the main charator got hit in the eye- now he has no depth perseption. He is doombed! No wait- he is so awsome he succeds anyways!" Using tennis matches as a premis for battle means that there is not as much story and build up though. Pretty much just fighting. If you wish in the manga you are reading that all the stories where cut out with only action this would be good.

Volume five develops Ryoma's character a little bit more with the introduction of his father, Nanjiro. It sets up an explanation for why Ryoma plays with such skill and natural talent, which adds an element of reality to a series that is becoming more and more about "magical" tennis. During Ryoma's match against Fudomine, he must fight and overcome "spot," a muscle paralysis condition (fictional, as far as I know). Sports fans who've played through injuries or watched their favorite players do so will appreciate the cunning and grit it takes to work around the pain.

This volume has the same shortcomings as the previous ones: there are lots of cliches, the characters are still somewhat one-dimensional, and the plot is formulaic. The tennis action allowed me to overlook these faults.

This book is about Ryoma join seigaku. Seigaku is a famous tennis club. The players in there is(KikumaroEiji,Oishi,Inui,Kiado,Fuji,Kawamura Takashi,Tezuka,Ryoma,Momo). Tezuka is the captain. They play different schools to beat them.Seigaku never lose when they play against a school. Ryoma had some tough opponents but in the end Ryoma still wins. Seigaku is the best team. That's what i think.

Ryoma has a challenge and can't (or probably can't, no spoilers) play his usual game, which is nice. We also got some post-brackdt goofing off with the team which was sorely needed. What's better to build character than a group sushi night? We also get to see more of Ryoma's dad who has been a central behind-the-scenes motivator for Ryoma so I'm happy to know a bit more about him.
