Why am I so fixated on Kunimitsu, the captain, more than any other member of the Seishun tennis team? He's distant, he's preternaturally talented, and while he always wears traditional tennis gear and his glasses are traditional and rimless, it's that choppy and semi-punky hair that makes you wonder if there are hidden depths that he daren't expose? Sigh...

At the time of this review, I have read volumes 8-14.

Jin vs. Ryoma Continue
This is quite an exciting match, but I am still not a fan of Jin. Of the sports antagonists I have met in sports manga, I am not seeing anything likeable about his personality and/or attitude. I will say this match does have some nice lines.

Lines
1. "Any player who practices hard...and gives it their all has nothing to be ashamed of...But a cocky fellow who mocks this sport and barely practices...and ends up losing...WELL, THERE'S NOTHING MORE UNBECOMING. That's why he will never allow himself to lose!" Aomine, Jin is not. Kuroko's Basketball's Aomine may be cocky, but at least there is something there that I think is likeable. Here with Jin? Not so much. Jin is also not like Akashi, because the backstory is more heartbreaking for Akashi.
2. "Tennis is a sport that requires both skill...and mental toughness to win." While I like this line, doesn't every sport require skill and mental toughness? In swimming, you are trying to convince yourself that you do not need to take a breath from the flags through the flip turn to the flags again. I think I may have done that once or twice while doing freestyle.
3. "Either Jin's pride or Ryoma's courage...will determine the outcome of this match!" It's up to you to read to find out what will win.
4. "Hard work and determination...at times surpasses skill." Gaara vs. Rock Lee. Enough said.

Intrasquad Rankings
This is quite an exciting event! We see the rise/return of Sadaharu. This is quite a comeback story and that is all I'm going to say about it for now. Maybe it is how he drawn with the bandana, maybe it is due to all the Batman fanfiction I have been reading, maybe it is how he speaks, or maybe a combination of all three, but Kaoru gives me Jason Todd vibes. Does anyone else have the same opinion or is it just me? Kunimitsu is a tricky customer.

Verdict: Let's go Kunimitsu!

The Prince of Tennis, Vol. 13 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (106–114) of the on-going manga series.

The first half of the tankōbon concludes the Finals for the Tokyo Prefecture Tournament. It concludes the match of Ryōma Echizen vs. Jin Akutsu. The match itself is a power match with the opponents bettering themselves in order to win. Echizen took an early lead, but Akutsu catches up rather quickly. In the end, Echizen wins with a score of 6–4. With his win, Seishun Academy wins the tournament with 3–1 matches and is eligible to compete in the Kantō Regional Tournament.
The other schools eligible are: Yamabuki Middle School, Ginka Middle School, Fudoumine Middle School, and Hyōtei Academy.

The second half of the tankōbon deals with the Intera-School Ranking Tournament at Seishun Academy. This tournament determines how the structure of the team would be for the Kantō Regional Tournament.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Takeshi Konomi. The tankōbon is divided in the conclusion of the Tokyo Prefecture Tournament with Seishun Academy winning the tournament. As a result, Jin Akutsu of Yamabuki Middle School quits the tennis team. The Intraschool Ranking Tournament is rather interesting with the most interesting match is between Kunimitsu Tezuka and Sadaharu Inui, who believes that his data can predict any outcome.

All in all, The Prince of Tennis, Vol. 13 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

5/5 (Review is for the series as a whole and does not contain spoilers)

This series follows 7th grader Ryoma Echizen as he strives to become the number one tennis player at his junior high school. Throughout the series, Ryoma faces off against numerous opponents, each one stronger than the last, in an effort to help lead his tennis team to becoming the champions of the National Tennis Tournament.

This series is a cute, action packed story about some junior high school students playing tennis. No prior knowledge of tennis is necessary, as the author takes the time to explain how certain shots are executed and briefly mentions which professional tennis players may use those shots. As the story progresses, some of the tennis shots get a bit more unrealistic and overly dramatic, but it adds to the excitement and builds tension. (So note that if you are an avid tennis player, it might seem a bit out there in terms of realism.) This is a great series for people who enjoy sports manga, and who enjoy competition, as the boys in this manga continue to push each other to new heights in their skills. There are also some good lessons in the story that teach the readers about having fun and continuing to persevere even when things get tough. It also teaches readers that sometimes we lose, and that’s okay too. In terms of age ratings, I would say that this series is a safe one for those in middle school, or perhaps even a bit younger. Overall, I really enjoyed this manga for its low stakes, fun action, and enjoyable cast of characters.

Ryoma and Akutsu's intense matche ends with Ryoma the victor. Akutsu decides he won't play tennis anymore but encourages Tachi to aspire to be like Ryoma and not him. With that win, Seishun wins the district tournament and now prepare for the Kanto tournament with intra-squad matches to see who will start.....Kunimitsu and Sadaharu are in a neck and neck battle. Will this be the first lost for Captain Kunimitsu?????

The Ryoma/Jin match has definitely been my favourite part of the series thus far, and after it finishes we have the intra-team competition to decide the starters for the next tournament. This comes with its own pleasant turn, which is the team captain himself doing something other than standing around! Dude barely ever has to play since Ryoma wins all the tournament matches, and any other match happens off-screen while he stands there all mysterious. What's he actually going to do now?
