A Japanese-Canadian born in BC, Nina has always loved fantasy, science fiction, comics, Japanese art, and, of course, The Simpsons. Over the last decade, she’s spent much of her time drawing things and telling stories.
In 2007 she uploaded a manga-style remix image of the Simpsons entitled “The Simpsonzu,” not expecting anything special. It became an overnight success. The appearance of “The Simpsonzu” on deviantART‘s front page caught the attention of the news aggregator Digg and the picture’s appearance on Digg caught the attention of everyone else. Suddenly she was being featured in numerous newspapers and magazines from all over the world and within a week, she got a call from Bongo Comics. They had a manga-style Simpsons story written and wanted her to draw it.
Nina is still drawing Simpsons regularly for Bongo, and her Death Note parody “Murder She Wrote” (from Simpsons Treehouse of Horror #14), received an Eisner Award for “Best Short Story,” one of the most acclaimed award in comics. In addition, she created the graphic novel Yokaiden for Del Rey Manga, illustrated The Last Airbender Prequel: Zuko’s Story, and regularly designs for video game apparel companies like Fangamer, The Yetee, and Meat Bun.

Shamoji Village is way out in the boonies of Japan. It’s said that there is a portal to the yokai realm in the nearby forest, and certainly the area has more than the usual number of those mysterious creatures. Most of the villagers are afraid of the yokai, but not cheerful orphan Hamachi Uramaki. He knows that the vast majority of yokai are at worst mischievous, and some might even be friendly if humans let them.
He’s mocked for his naivete, but Hamachi may be on to something. When he meets a kappa in the woods that’s caught in a trap, Hamachi frees the water goblin. It’s not a deed that endears the child to the kappa (soon nicknamed “Madkap”) but it acknowledges the debt. When the child returns home, he’s shocked to find that his grandmother was the one who set the trap. She hates everyone (only barely tolerating Hamachi because of the blood relative thing), but especially yokai.
The next day, after encountering a would-be yokai slayer, ronin Kyumon Zaigo, Hamachi returns home again to find that his grandmother’s soul is gone. This is a power the kappa possess, and it seems all too likely that Madkap has avenged himself. Hamachi decides he must go to the yokai realm and retrieve his grandmother’s soul.
This children’s comic is what we in the fandom call Original English Language (OEL) manga. It’s done in a mangaesque art style and packaged like a manga, but was written in English for an American audience.
Hamachi is in the grand tradition of boy heroes, a plucky orphan lad who has a bit of a temper, but whose good nature and friendly attitude stand him in good stead on his adventures. He does have a habit of saying things out loud that he or the people he’s speaking to already know, but this is primarily a convention to fill in the young target audience.
The art is good, showing off the various monsters to good effect. Different kappa have different features, which makes it easy to tell them apart. All the humans are distinct as well. Several of the characters are rather flat, but it’s only the first volume so there is room to improve them. Much of Hamachi’s knowledge comes from a book written by yokai expert Inukai Mizuki, who’s a shout-out to Shigeru Mizuki, right down to the missing arm.
This volume comes with minibios of important village residents, some gag comics (there’s also quite a bit of humor in the story itself), and a message from the author in her “Spacecoyote” guise.
Content note: mutilation, the death of an adult guardian. The story is aimed at kids 9 and up, some sensitive youngsters may find it a bit too spooky.
Overall: This series ended after only two volumes, with the story still near its beginning. It has potential, but as it is, it’s mostly a curiosity. Might be best suited to creative young people who can imagine their own continuations.

Hamachi is a young Japanese boy with a fascination with the Yokai, Japanese spirits. His grandmother, who is raising him, can't understand his fascination with these creatures. Maybe it has something to do with the book his parents gave him before they died. He has been studying Inukai Mizuki's Field Guide to Yokai since the age of four. From all his studies, he believes that the Yokai are amazing creatures who need to be treated with respect instead of feamr and loathing. When he finds one of these Yokai known as a Kappa in a trap, he sets it free. It is this single act that begins a chain of events that will lead him entering the realm of the Yokai to avenge his grandmother. There he finds that among the Yokai there are friends as well as dangerous creature. He also begins forming a band of Yokai allies that will lead to the next part of his journey in book 2.

This started off rough and got much better by the end. I get stressed out by stories with harsh caregivers, though it seems to be regularly occurring thing in manga. Fortunately, that situation didn't spiral in this book. The humor picked up, and I'm invested in the story. I love yokai and their portrayal in this manga didn't disappoint. I tried reading this several months ago and lost interest about a quarter of the way through. This time I read it in one sitting. Rocky start, strong finish. Bonus - I can let my kids read it!

I am fascinated by myths, legends, and monsters- and Yo-Kai are no exception. I had been wanting to check out this series, and it so far is worth it.
The main character is quirky, and interesting enough. He seems to be pretty dynamic, and the story flows well in this volume. Definitely reading volume number 2 before the start of 2023 happening soon. Also wish the series was longer, but I'll still enjoy what I can get of it.

Quite enjoyable and I liked the artwork, but sometimes it was difficult to understand what was going on because the drawings weren't colored in very much. The story is interesting but for me it seemed like it was trying too hard to be funny (or maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it).

Ok so… this book is so good in many different ways.
Like how Matsumoto uses yokai, which can be usually scary creatures, to tell a very upbeat and happy story.
She also has created very lovable characters which drew me right in when I first read Yokaiden.
The art style is incredible, keeping a messy but clear style and being really good at visuals.
The paneling is impressive and her use of the “chibi” versions of characters is used at the right time. Sometime it gets annoying when an artist constantly uses a “•w•” face, etc to convey an emotion instead of drawing it out in their actual style. There is a time and a place, and I think Matsumoto does a great job at her timing with those types of drawings.
This manga/comic is also reallllyyyy funny. Hamachi is such a great main character, his optimism and frank stupidness is so endearing and entertaining.
I found myself drawn into this book almost immediately, and stayed for the long run.

Hamachi is altijd al geïnteresseerd geweest in Yokai (Japanse geesten) ook al zijn ze eng en kunnen ze gevaarlijk zijn. als zijn oma word vermoord door zo'n geest gaat hij naar hun rijk en wil hij haar dood wreken. weet zelf niks over de Yokai maar vond het een leuke strip. ben blij dat ik dit boekje bij het boekenfestijn heb meegenomen en wil zeker verder met deze serie. ben benieuwd hoe het nu verder gaat met Hamachi.

Better than I had thought it would be. I don't particularly care for the art, and Hamachi favors yokai to an almost pathological extent, even within the context of the book. No wonder the other villagers think he's weird! That said, the story itself is pretty good, and I really liked the information about yokai.

This a great book it's about Japanese spirits. I love read about Japanese spirits they are so interesting. And it also has great characters, YokIden takes you a great adventures. Great book but too short. I'm starting volume 2. I very disappointed that there isn't a volume 3. The author has co-author other books about different spirits, I'll have try and find them. Well worth the read.

Fun manga that I got from Five Below because it said it received an Eisner Award. It’s for young teens, I’m guessing, but, I enjoyed it. Entertaining and some humor and a very quick read. This edition is written to be read in the western way from front to back. I liked the drawings as well. I will be reading part 2 also.

In the top 10 of the best manga I have read. Not only was it a cute story, but it also presents aspects of Japanese culture and folklore in a easy way to get people interested in learning more about Yokai. This is a good introduction to the most basic characteristics of Yokai while giving each one a personality. I highly recommend this manga.

I love the art and overall story. The characters are fun and I feel like the authors personality shows through with the free talk, yōkai bites and meeting the locals at the end. Can’t wait to find and read the 2nd volume.

The yokai stuff is interesting but it is hard to take the protagonist seriously since he seems to know lots about yokai except for how dangerous they are.

"Are... Are you a kappa? Those green, cucumber-loving, river dwelling yokai who are common in Japan, but make no appearance in western culture?"
...If this volume had a little less exposition and a little more "show don't tell", I would've rated it higher. Other than that I was pleasantly surprised!

Summary: While most people fear the yokai (Japanese spirits), orphan Hamichi is obsessed with them as only a kid his age can be obsessed with a subject. He talks, thinks, and breathes yokai. Since everyone else thinks yokai are scary or boring, Hamichi is an outsider with only his crabby grandma for company.
In this volume, Hamichi saves the life of a trapped kappa (water-spirit), only to have his kindness backfire when the kappa finds out Hamichi's grandma set the trap and steals her soul! To find the kappa and ask for his grandma's soul, Hamichi must travel into the spirit world, where he meets fascinating yokai and faces terrible danger.
Plot: Like many manga, Yokaiden features a straight-forward plot that can carry the story indefinitely. While it is simple (objective: regain soul, period), the storyline is still interesting. It is hard not to care about a boy trying to save his grandmother's life.
Characters: Sure, Hamichi is nothing new, but this ever-optimistic, slightly warped kid is incredibly likable. (Think Lilo, without the pouting.) Much of the story's humor comes from his cheerful refusal to realize that he's an odd duck. Whether he's amputating legs, telling Enma that he'll pass on entering Hell just now, or telling a yokai where the naughty children play so it can skin their feet (it's a discipline demon), Hamichi always has an innocent smile and a "this is SO COOL" outlook.
Other human characters at this point are limited to grumpy Grandma (nuff said) and a yokai-hunting ronin who is still very mysterious at the end of the volume.
The yokai steal the show. Each has a distinct personality, from the edgy, threatening kappa, to the take-no-sass living lantern, to the yeti-like creature who threatens to skin Hamichi's feet but gives a horrified apology when he finds out Hamichi has behaved himself lately. There are dangers in the spirit world as well, and one soul-eating monster is introduced in this volume. Hamichi will need all the help he can get if he's going to survive his quest.
Dialogue/Writing: Full of snappy one-liners and distinct voices, the dialogue is fun and never dull.
Pacing: Hamichi is always on the go and so is the plot, but exposition is woven into the dialogue skillfully so the reader never gets lost.
Art: The drawings are wonderful. Hamichi is very cartoonish and exaggerated, but the other human characters are done in a more understated, adult style, and the ronin resembles a traditional shojo hero, but grittier. The yokai are drawn to match their traditional descriptions and their individual personalities. Much of the art is stunning and all of it is pure fun.
Ending: This volume comes to a good stopping point while still creating a build-up to volume two, which I can't wait to read.

Bonus: Each chapter ends with a field guide style entry about different species of yokai, with humorous asides. Fans of the slash-and-dash Wii game Muramasa: The Demon Blade will recognize several of the spirits, and it's fun to get some background on them.
In this volume, Hamichi saves the life of a trapped kappa (water-spirit), only to have his kindness backfire when the kappa finds out Hamichi's grandma set the trap and steals her soul! To find the kappa and ask for his grandma's soul, Hamichi must travel into the spirit world, where he meets fascinating yokai and faces terrible danger.
Plot: Like many manga, Yokaiden features a straight-forward plot that can carry the story indefinitely. While it is simple (objective: regain soul, period), the storyline is still interesting. It is hard not to care about a boy trying to save his grandmother's life.
Characters: Sure, Hamichi is nothing new, but this ever-optimistic, slightly warped kid is incredibly likable. (Think Lilo, without the pouting.) Much of the story's humor comes from his cheerful refusal to realize that he's an odd duck. Whether he's amputating legs, telling Enma that he'll pass on entering Hell just now, or telling a yokai where the naughty children play so it can skin their feet (it's a discipline demon), Hamichi always has an innocent smile and a "this is SO COOL" outlook.
Other human characters at this point are limited to grumpy Grandma (nuff said) and a yokai-hunting ronin who is still very mysterious at the end of the volume.
The yokai steal the show. Each has a distinct personality, from the edgy, threatening kappa, to the take-no-sass living lantern, to the yeti-like creature who threatens to skin Hamichi's feet but gives a horrified apology when he finds out Hamichi has behaved himself lately. There are dangers in the spirit world as well, and one soul-eating monster is introduced in this volume. Hamichi will need all the help he can get if he's going to survive his quest.

I bought this because it reminded me of Shaman king. And it is very enjoyable.

Summary: Hamachi loves Yokai (Japanese spirits) and feels that many of them are friendly and that people just misunderstand them. He wants to find out all he can about them and befriend them. A masterless warrior comes to Hamachi's town to pledge himself to the village that in return for lodging and food he will protect the town from Yokai as this town is supposed to be close to the portal of the Yokai Realm. Hamachi is angry beyond belief, when he returns home he finds his grandmother dead, presumably killed and he decides to find and enter the Yokai Realm. There he meets more Yokai on their own turf both friendly and evil.
Comments: I really loved this story! I know nothing about manga so can't base my review on that aspect but I'm assuming this is an American manga. The story is fast-paced, full of monsters both good and evil, some even hilarious. The humour factor throughout the book is high making an even more enjoyable read. I quickly became attached to Hamachi who will occasionally lose his temper and tell anyone off if he feels they are doing the wrong thing no matter how much older, wiser, bigger they are than him. What could be perceived as a cute little kid's story is in fact not, as it has an edge, a violent edge. When violence is called for it is used and some situations are startling, yet amusing. In between the story we are shown glimpses of Hamachi's journal where he draws pictures of the Yokai he meets and he narrates a little information about it. This in itself is interesting and funny. Not to mention an entertaining source of ancient Japanese mythology. The book ends on an exciting note leaving one wanting more. A great beginning to what could prove to be a fantastic series. I've already added volume 2 (due out at the end of Nov.) to my amazon cart!

Hamachi, an orphan who lives with his grandma in the era where samurai's were still respectable in Japan, distracts himself from the daily hard works misery by reading about the japanese monsters called Yokai who were either abandoned household items come to life, some who resembled animals some who resembled humans. some were harmless others played pranks and some thirsted for blood.
Hamachi using a 100 yokai tales book and 100 candles opens a portal between their world and the Yokai's making them more visible to the eye.
His grandma despises them and when she goes to wash the clothes by the riverside she angers a kappa by throwing rocks at them, when the kappa starts stalking her she puts out a trap that crushed the kappa's foot.
Hamachi discovers the kappa while collecting bamboo and helps him out of his trap. the kappa swears revenge and when the boy goes to the city to sell bamboo merchandise, the kappa intrudes in their home and steals his grandmas soul leaving her body lifeless.
Hamachi returning home discovers the tragedy and goes after the kappa who went back into their realm.

What makes this manga stand out is the silly, sarcastic dialogue and humorous plot. The story centers around Hamachi, a young boy who is obsessed with yokai, which are demons/ghosts. He wants to befriend the yokai, even though everyone else in his town sees the yokai as negative, due to their mischievious and allegedly murderous nature.
The art is pretty standard (not outstanding but not bad), but the dialogue is funny and the insertion of Hamachi's "journal entries" is inventive and fun. Also, Hamachi is an aspiring writer who frequently refers to a fictional author and book on yokai in the manga. This manga would appeal to fans of "Spirited Away," "Naruto," and "Sandman: Dream Hunters," as well as aspiring writers.
The only side effect from reading this manga is that you might get hungry for sushi or izakaya since Hamachi means "yellow tail fish" in Japanese!

I grabbed this one randomly from the new books because I liked the cover art and found the concept appealing. It's a good enough story, I suppose, and aims to educate about some aspects of Japanese mythology, but the more manga I read the more convinced I become that the form just isn't for me. I find no humor in what I assume to be the jokes and am constantly annoyed at the shorthand conventions that I see as replacements for effective art and storytelling. I have to think my dislike is due to cultural differences and unfamiliarity, so I keep trying--often failing--to be open and not blame the material, and I can't make a blanket statement because there are exceptions, but I can't really rate this one fairly because I'm finding myself prejudiced against manga in general and lumping this in with the rest.

The first volume in a new Japanese action/humor graphic novel probably mostly directed at young teen guys. Yokai are part of traditional Japanese folklore, spirits or monsters that can take many form. Some like to commit harmless pranks but others are out for blood. Hamachi is a young teen who lives in the time of feudal Japan. He thinks Yokai are fascinating and wants to get to know them and their ways. One day he returns from an errand to find the Yokai-hating grandmother he lives with mysteriously dead. He sets out into the wilderness of the Yokai to find out the truth.
