Love in the Pacific Northwest #2

Γλυκιά Απαγωγή

Rate this book

****4 CUTE CAPTIVE STARS****

ARC provided by Blue Orchard Books via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

**BORROWING ALEX was previously published by Amber Quill Press in 2007 and has been revised and updated for the 2013 Blue Orchard Books edition. This second edition also includes two additional scenes.

This book is a fast paced, cute, funny romance about 2 unexpected people falling in love.

Why not 5 Stars?
I enjoyed this book immensely for the first 95% but then I just couldn't get my heart around the ending...to me it was a bit cheesy and unbelievable.

Nikki has been engaged to Royce and he hasn't committed to setting a date for their wedding.  She suspects that he is holding off because he wants to obtain partner in her father's office but wants to give him the benefit of doubt.

So, she comes up with this cockamamie plan to kidnap his best-man, Alex, and leave Royce a note stating that her and Alex are going away to have a "fling". So she kidnaps Alex and brings him to her cabin on the lake.  What Nikki doesn't realize, is how she starts feeling about Alex.

Alex, on the other hand has been fed lies by Royce about Nikki and he in turn realizes that Nikki isn't the bubble headed, party girl that Royce led him to believe.  In fact, Alex starts to appreciate Nikki's intelligence, pride, love of animals and especially her warm loving heart.

Nikki's animals are extraordinarily funny along with her antics and "outside the box" thinking!  The best part of the whole book is the kidnap scene....I chuckled through the whole thing!

If you are looking for a light read...then this book is for you!

I received a copy from the author; this is my honest review.
-Over-the-top, near improbable situations, but oh so funny, intertwined with tender moments.
-Loved the banter while Alex is trying, really trying, to understand Nikki, who has the most unclear logic ever heard from a woman.
-Best man to the groom but best friend to the bride, Alex is the perfect mate for her.
-A bit of mystery and suspense at the end which wraps up everything in a neat bundle.
-The story relates two POV - Alex's and Nikki's - but in certain chapters, I would've liked to hear a third one - Royce's.

Nikki was a hoot and poor Alex!!! So all is not as it seems with Nikki's fiance and he has Alex fooled as well in regard to Nikki. Kidnapping does seems a little farfetched but I think the author did a great job in pulling it off. This is definitely a romantic comedy with no cheating (I hate cheating). Would love to read a sequel about Nikki's bff. This is the second book by this author I have read - Where She Belongs was a great book and I highly recommend (it isn't a romantic comedy, more a serious story with romance).

Glad this book is over... the female character is rich and she's trying to get her fiancé to pay attention to her by kidnapping his best friend...OMGOODNESS I barely gave it three stars this was kind. It had nothing to do with me reading several books at the same time.. this story was ridiculous.

Girl is frustrated with fiancé, so kidnaps her fiancé's best friend to make the fiancé jealous? Honestly, I don't know how she thought it would be a good idea.
6.5/10 A funny, but sometimes pathetic story.

I thought it was juvenal, boring and predictable. I only finished it because it was short and I listened to the audio book at 2X speed.

I think that the end is too predictable. Despite that, I enjoyed very much the comedy aspects in the story and truly loved Nikki's pets: two dogs, a cat and then a bunny (also a snake appeared in the story, but I don't like snakes: I respect them!).

Borrowed from Library

I have been avoiding and putting off writing this post about BORROWING ALEX by Cyndy Procter-King. I felt is was hard to hear and juvenile.

Many of the concepts feel as if they are out of a piece of historical fiction.

The premise of the story is antediluvian:

Not knowing your fiance well enough to understand he is not at all committed to the relationship but is only trying to be made a partner in a medical practice. It’s almost as if it were an arranged marriage.

And then, Alex, her hostage, feels protective and responsible for her; a little Stockholm Syndrome.

Her father doesn’t believe women should be medical professionals and she listened to him. I just do not see this in the real world. Fathers want what is best for their daughters; they want them to be happy and have fulfilling careers.

She plans the whole thing carefully but doesn’t bring him any clothes.

I am stuck on a detail: There’s an outhouse but the cabin has plumbing. This could be a grey water versus septic issue but most places seem to have eliminated the grey water method, especially near bodies of water.

I just thought it was jejune, and had put too much time into the audio not to finish it.

When there’s finally any action near the end of the book it is nicely done. Alex is a sympathetic and noble character, but NIkki is a ditzy woman with a ridiculous plan, the success of which is dependent on someone reacting a certain way to a note left to lure him in. It doesn’t sound as if the character ever confronts him as she finally ends up having to do. Instead she depends on this TV situation comedy type plot to work on her relationship.

She does love animal though so she does score a couple of points back there.

It wasn’t awful, it just wasn’t very good.

I borrowed it from the audio library in my town so at least I didn’t waste any money, just my time. I should have more to say, but I don’t feel I have that much more to say because I did not feel engaged in the audiobook and I like to take the high road.

Setting: Lake Eden, Washington (state)
Genre: Rom-com

I received this from instafreebie for an honest review.
Originally published in 2007, but has been newly edited and e-published to reflect the author's writing style, as well as the addition of two new scenes.

In order to make her fiancé Royce jealous, Nikki St. James kidnaps Alex, who is to be Royce's best man. If he will ever agree to set a date for the wedding. Understandably, Alex is not agreeable to this plan, so to prevent his escape from her "summer place" - actually an almost primitive cabin she inherited from her grandparents- Nikki keeps him tied up. His plan is to escape from the (as Royce had described) bubble-headed party girl by gaining her trust. She is sure Royce will come to get her as soon as he finds her note. After the first night, she decides to trust him and lets him loose. Alex and Nikki get to know each other while they wait for Royce, and fight a mutual attraction.
This is a well-written romantic comedy with witty dialogue and funny situations (many of the latter involving the 3 pets Nikki has brought along). The plot is engrossing and the characters are fully developed. Both Alex and Nikki experience growth over the course of the story.
There is 1 sex scene, plus some kissing and a fleeting instance of imagining "I could...". It falls between erotic and sweet. Very little cussing, no profane words (taking god's name in vain, etc.) or f-bombs. Overall a good way to spend a few hours.

When I was ready for a romance that would take my mind to a happy place and bring a smile to my face, I went for Cindy Procter-King, knowing that I'd get exactly what I needed. I was captivated by Procter-King's heroine from the moment I first pictured her blond curls until the last. Witty, kookie, empathetic, smart and wide open to the world around her, (and, like the book, a little beyond believable - you might find yourself wishing you had just a little of her chutzpah) Nikki is pure delight. Alex is her foil. His journey with Nikki is one you will happily join. The writing is fluid and insightful, giving the sense that the author is keenly aware of human nature and, in particular, the joys and difficulties that come with young love. Her addition of the craggy and loving neighbors shows her range. I was also impressed that without ever meeting many of the peripheral characters directly, I still felt that I knew them as Procter-King made them too come alive. If you want a little fun and romance, with a dollop of sexual titillation, indulge yourself in this book.

**BORROWING ALEX was previously published by Amber Quill Press in 2007 and has been revised and updated for the 2013 Blue Orchard Books edition. This second edition also includes two additional scenes. When I read the disclaimer, I was worried, but I need not have been. I thoroughly enjoyed this romp of a contemporary romance from Ms. Procter-King. She has given us two very likeable characters, made them come alive, and made me care about their happily ever after. Was the premise a bit far-fetched? Yes, but that's what romance is for. I was thoroughly entertained. The book is evenly paced, populated by quirky, interesting characters, has sharp dialogue, and is written with humor. Refreshing.

Listened to the audiobook and it was just ok. Really didn't care for the book thought it was a little boring. It had a lot of promise and the plot was different in a good way but it just fell flat for me. It did have a cute sweet romance weaved into it and it ended on good note but predictable. It some ways it was hard to follow and somewhat immature. Overall it wasn't bad but not great somewhere in between 2 Stars.

Really dumb premise. Frustratingly goofy. Gotta admit that about 3/4ths of the way in, I asked myself why I was wasting my time with the book and didn't bother to finish it. That's saying something for me because I usually suffer through a book even if it is boring. This was just plain stupid with juvenile dialogue...even for a romance novel!

This is a fun little read that at times can be a bit silly.

Nikki is a sweet and caring character, but she's more than a little nuts. Alex is really quite sweet and a softie at heart. They both make a good couple and i'm glad they got together, but the ending was a bit boring.

Nikki thinks outside the box. WAY outside the box. Alex is torn between loyalty and insanity. Together, Nikki and Alex discover a bond - but is it love or proximity?

While the premise for this story is way out there, the author tells a funny tale, with several wagging tails to boot. Nikki and Alex will make you shake your head, vividly picture the scenes, and laugh.

I found Nikki to be very entertaining, especially in her way of thinking. Nikki has a very strange idea. an idea made out of fear and desperation. If acts of this nature truly ended in this manner, I am sure it would happen more often.

A quick and easy read. The leading male character is nicely written, while the main female character is quirky. This short romance is fun and light-hearted. The storyline is not always believable, but it's fiction, so just roll with it.

This was such a fun read. Alex and Nikki were engaging characters throughout the story. I was rooting for them. The animals had their moments but Willie stole the show whenever he appeared. Enjoyed this book so much I finished it in one sitting.
