Uehara never liked his classmate, Mizue. But, one summer day, they're both in the same detention session and for some reason he can't take his eyes off of him! Confused, Uehara didn't know what to make of this situation... until Mizue asks him to be his model for his art assignment. Mizue plays if off cool, but is he feeling what Uehara is feeling? Or is he just playing games?
The title won me over. I have a serious case of sticky beak. The notion that I didn't know the intriguing secret was very distressing for me. This could be a problem if authors discover my weakness!
I've been reading Shonen styled manga mostly so between the title and the different art style being presented on the cover I was interested enough to go out (and by go out I mean I skipped through my favourite book websites)and buy it. After the bothersome wait for it to arrive safely in the mail, a constant worry for me, it finally arrived safely in the mail box. It is considerably wise of me not to go out to greet Postie McPosterson (the postman, just so we are clear) for he'd probably never return after I either hugged him to death for delivering my book or proposing we marry. I am sure he'd never return and then what would I do? But I digress.
The book was far more superb than I originally thought it would be. The front cover art did leave me feeling a little iffy with how the colour filled in. It seemed too 'Mont Marte' art advertising. You know the little drawings they have on the front of the colour pencils? In particular the skin tone ones? Within the actual manga the art was much more appealing. Maybe the colours on the cover and I don't agree? You wouldn't believe the number of times I have had to rearrange my books because I got a new novel and the colours didn't sit right with me. One evening I spent a couple hours just trying to fix one shelf's colour arrangement. This was while I was meant to be sleeping of course. Makes me sound a tad OCD upon reflection. Irrelevant at the moment. Black white seem to give the characters a certain, more life like quality while keeping it surreal enough to be funny with those brilliantly drawn expressions.
The plot is very straight forward and pretty obvious but the characters are everyday kinds of people with none of the seriously depressing emotional problems. And hip hip hooray! There was no rape in this book! Always a good thing. You never know when you might pick up a book and suddenly find a rape scene which not a very pleasant thing to stumble upon. So we shall sum up with this: I absolutely loved this book, 5 stars means it is clearly a favourite and I enjoy rereading it. It's nice and light which keeps away the absolute heart ache some novels insist on giving you sometimes. I could say "Buy it, it is great!" but you would already have made up your mind on whether you will or won't by the time you finish reading the 3 reveiws currently up. If you haven't then you a seriously indecisive person =)
I decided to buy this book because i am absolutely in love with Rize Shinba's other manga 'Mister Mistress' but i have to say they're not really that similar.
That's not to say that i didn't enjoy this manga for it's own merits. It's pretty short and not a lot happens but it's sweet and light and kinda refreshing. It is the simple high school love story of two boys who spend an afternoon in detention together and realize that they enjoy each others company. It's told from the point-of-view of Umehara, the shy art student, who has always considered Mizue, the class-clown and resident trouble maker, to be a bit of a shady character. After the afternoon they spend together friendship blossoms and maybe something else?
It's not the most in-depth story ever, not even that uncommon with it's typical high-school setting, but the art is nice, the story is simple yet interesting and i, at least, was left with a happy and contented feeling when i had finished it.
If you're looking for something sexy then this is definitely the wrong book for you; it's pretty tame by anyone's standards. However if you're looking for something light and happy then give it a try.
This is the standard teen high school story that anyone who has ever watched a teen flick is familiar with (it's just two guys instead of a guy and girl). One is a sensitive, shy artist who falls in love with the popular, outgoing guy after spending time with him. It's sweet and the artwork nicely portrays everything and reflects their personalities well. Overall, if typical teen flicks disgust you then this title isn't for you but if you enjoy or, like me, have a strange weakness for teen romance stories then this is definitely one you'll want to pick up.
