"When I met the cool stud Narusawa at college I said half-jokingly, "Screw me next!" Before the day was out, he had. Our relationship was supposed to be just physical, but now I realize I'm falling in love with Narusawa. Looking back on it, it's a one-way love I brought upon myself. I'm much too embarrassed to tell the purely physical Narusawa "I love you" now!"
This was cute. I loved the 'friends with benefits' theme but I felt like once I got into one of the stories it'd shift to another which left me a bit sad because I just wanted more of the current story.
Not exactly what I was expecting, I'm about as clueless about Yaoi now as when I started this book. Although I've never really seen the appeal in m/m relationships for women, so that was never really an expected outcome, but I'm interested from a theoretical perspective. Combined with the fact that I don't really understand the eastern context of this book either, this is not going to be the most informative review I've ever written.
A collection of short stories that were all slightly different iterations of the Yaoi "kink", I had a real hard time getting into any of the plot lines or specific character pairs. Not exactly the most scathing critique, considering I don't "get" this sort of thing, but a warning I suppose to anyone else who is just getting into this sort of thing.
The one thing that really bothered me however, was the forced nature of most of the sex scenes. I'm not sure if I would term them as rape per say, but none of them really involved any form of consent and some involved a certain level of resistance. I did almost lower my entire rating to one star, but decided not to for two reasons.
A) I don't understand this genre/culture at all so who am I to say that this is super despicable.
B) While this collection was not super explicit, it was clearly attempting to arouse the reader who has a specific kink. Since no actual people are exploited in this medium, I think that manga and comics are the best way for more taboo subjects to be explored erotically. Coming across a scene like this in a kink specific collection and in a mainstream comic book are two different things entirely. I am sorry I can't really explain this further yet, but I will try and gather my ideas into more coherent order soon.
