I actually got this manga for my wife because of the author theme, but it's me who got to read it first. I tell myself this is okay because she's done likewise with some of the naughty books she has gotten me, so we shall just proceed with the help of some cheap shiraz. This volume is a series of short pieces, really, with the Author's Pet storyline taking up two chapters and the bonus at the end, so it's the "main" story in the volume, but really this is just a rather sweet collection that focuses on a number of MM romances. And in that vein it's sweet and adorable, with some variation in the characters but without a whole lot of steam. It's cute, which is nice, but it's also rather tame, which is not always my cup of tea.
This is far from a bad yaoi manga, though, and keeps things rather light and romantic. It is quite soft in its depictions of lust and the like, and the stories are fairly typical. There is a sense of restraint to most of the characters, as well, none of them really pushing the relationships forward very much, each of them afraid to move, afraid to act. Not all of them are sure in their sexuality, and that hesitating is handled well, though it makes for a more subdued reading than something where at least one of the characters is very sexual empowered. Again, these stories focus more on the romance, the slow tension, the feeling that these guys are not sure what they're looking for and so when these relationships develop they are almost surprised, though as a reader will not be shocked by what happens.
The art is interesting and not exactly typical for yaoi manga, favoring elongated torsos and limbs and small heads, which is a little strange at first glance but that has its own charm and grace. The characters all fit with their visual portrayals, though some of the characters do end up looking very similar. The sex scenes are, again, a little tame, not really ramping up the steam, but for someone looking for something...cuter, I guess, it should be fine. It really does depend on what you're looking for, as the volume does a good job with what it seems to set out to do, which is to have some adorable fun, but anyone wanting something with some real passion might want to look elsewhere. Most of these character almost seem bored throughout, or perhaps it is just that reluctance showing through.
There were also a few instances where text would be cutting off the edge of the page, which I don't hold against the book itself because I could still fill in those gaps, but it was a little annoying, as this was already a larger format book than most yaoi in America, complete with dust jacket. All that said, though, this volume was still an enjoyable read, light and soft and at the least completely consensual. I would have liked a bit more animation from the characters, but it's still good and I did like the title chapters with the author and his pet. I also liked the notes from the author, which were fun and well done. All in all it was a good manga, just not a great one, and gets a 6.25/10.
The title story had a cool premise but fell flat. The other stories were all too short, too inplausable, too boring. didn't bother finishing the last half. I guess I do have standards haha
A collection of below average short stories with mediocre art. At times I couldn’t quite make out some of the background text on my kindle, because it was so faint and blurry.
I'm not a short stories person so it's probably just me that feels the stories are disjointed, a couple of times I thought I was missing pages with the jumps the stories made.
Even though this ended up being an anthology with a few chapters of the main story, and then others to fill the space, I enjoyed it because they all had some play on the theme of "pet." I especially liked the one with the vet student who takes in stray cats and ends up taking in a "stray" person as well. That one was cute. The art is also lovely for everything.
Another one I liked was about the convenience store clerk and his cake man. I loved the dog he fed and when the store closed, I was worried about the dog! My heart almost broke when the kid told the man he was half off as well. And still I worried about what the cute dog would do! (Luckily at the end of the chapter they're shown walking the pup.)
A nice collection. I've found many times anthologies of work by the same author don't have a theme other than "same author" or "megane" but this one worked. Though the idea of "pet" was different in each chapter, it was still there in some way.
I must confess, I did expect a bit more from this title. Though, looking back, I can't fathom why. Perhaps it was the art that intrigued me, which is something like a less refined version of Amayo Tsuge's (Cute Beast) simplistic, yet visually appealing style.
All in all, if you want some cute one-shots that don't stretch your brain matter too far, this is it.
I didn't expect too much from this, but I was pleasantly surprised. The story about the author and the student/slave felt a bit too rushed, but I loved the one with the vetenarian. (Which once again proves I am powerless when it comes to cats!) The other stories were enjoyable as well. Nothing deep, but sweet and fun, and I liked the art.
A collection of 4-6 short stories. It was pretty OK - stories tended to be on the sweet and cute side and more of the fluffy-feel romance. How to say this... if you've read a lot of yaoi manga, then this one doesn't offer anything new, be it plot or characters. Read this because it's available from the library and it's OK to pass away time, but I'm unlikely to re-read this.
This was more of an anthology of short stories. It wasn't bad, but because they were stories that spanned a handful of pages each, they weren't extremely developed.
