The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya #2

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Vol. 2

Rate this book

"Let's track down aliens, time travelers, and psychics and hang out with them!" Haruhi Suzumiya established the SOS Brigade for that sole purpose. But why has she been acting so strange of late? So... melancholy? Unable to locate any supernatural beings (even though they're right there in the club room the whole time), Haruhi's frustrations turn violent. What's Kyon gotten himself mixed up in this time?! Enjoy volume 2 of this somewhat abnormal high school story!

I enjoyed this one much more than the first one! The adventures of the SOS Brigade continue as Kyon learns more about his friends as well as the predicament of Haruhi! I honestly love all the characters of this series and I can't wait to read the next one ❤️

One of the best manga series I've ever read. Don't judge a book by its cover, this is not your typical manga.

The first several books aren't as good. I don't know - for some reason in the first 3 or 4, the art is totally messed up. Kyon looks especially pathetic. But the visuals get a lot better. By the time you get to, say, 11 or even before that, the illustrations are fantastic. And the plots get better and more organized as well.

I can't dislike Haruhi Suzumiya. I've watched the anime, the movie, and am eagerly awaiting the next manga release in English. So, read these books and try to enjoy them. Keep reading. They get a lot better. And even with their somewhat lesser quality, these are funny. Enjoyable :]

Actually rating...1.5-2 stars depending on how I think about it.

More Thoughts than Plot

Like a broken record...Kyon is an average freshman at high school who has the misfortune (or fortune) of sitting in front of a very eccentric girl, Haruhi Suzumiya. Her one great desire? To meet aliens, time travelers, and psychics. A chance conservation between Kyon and Haruhi leads her to found the SOS Brigade, a school club dedicated to finding such people. Haruhi drags Kyon into her 'club' along with Yuki (who really just came with the room), kidnaps Miharu Asahina (to be in the club).

So...I've been watching the anime and trying to figure out how the series ends since I can't find an actual anime ending. So I decided to read the manga and see if it had an ending. Cause, why not??? Book series usually have conclusions! Manga=Anime in book form (or better usually), yeah? Uh no...

The story line rips along, missing at lot of the plot present in the anime...it was just a disappointment. I'd recommend the anime to anyone who wants to get the full scope of what is going in in these books.

In Conclusion

I bumped the star rating to 2 because, I imagine, had I not watched the anime I would have enjoyed...well, disliked it less. This manga is not something I would have normally read anyway, and the fact that it is missing some of the important qualities of the anime just solidifies that. Reading volume 2 was my "fair shake of the stick". The stick be shook and found lacking.

4 estrellas.

I liked this one a bit more than the first. I am getting invested into this story and I am interested to see where it goes. It still has a few hiccups but the art was more consistent, and some of the characters are actually starting to get development.

I want to go into the thick of it. On to book 3.

interesting , if navel-gazing philophosizing and interesting character stuff.

The anime is more of a parody and while it is the same arcs somehow the LN does not read that way.

This volume was a great adaptation of the first light novel volume. It captured the sense of the ending of the first book, though not always in the same way.

It opened a new insight into Haruhi and Kyon. Kyon is shown to want to be friends with and actually like his fellow SOS Brigade members. Haruhi is shown as immature, selfish, and pitiable at the same time. She can't move past her disillusionment, and yet wants to be grounded. She is selfish and yet seems to feel a sincere but pouty guilt when called out on her behavior.

I quite liked this one and the insights the art and method of story-telling can give us into the characters.

This book's art and pacing is terrible.
Kyon looks like a flat-headed mess, Koizumi looks like a smiling moron, Haruhi just isn't Haruhi, and Yuki looks like an adult that failed to grow out of her teens. Mikuru is the only decent looking character in this manga.
The pace is too fast, people most likely would have to have prior knowledge to know what's happening.
Go watch the anime or read the light novels. Much, MUCH better than this Haruhi-Suzumiya manga wannabe. I'm a Suzumiya fan too, but I just can't be in love with this book.

I love the "voice over" feature of the narrative withe Kyon. It adds so much to the story since everything is so odd. I'm not sure I like where the story is going though - Haruhi is a "god" who created this whole boring world?

Uh...ugh?

Still Kyon's journey is so fascinating! He only barely keeps her from "deleting" the entire world by talking about how ponytails make him feel hot and kissing her. This was actually the best moment of the entire volume. Not much else happened.

BOTTOM LINE: Mikuru pulls her breasts out to show her star shaped mole! Classic.

I watched the first season of TMOHS, so I know what all is going on, but events are out of place. Like it's only volume two and Itsuki has just demonstrated his powers to Kyon, but then in the next chapter or so, Kyon and Haruhi are already in the closed-space. This doesn't occur until somewhere near the end of the anime. Hmm...

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya continues! And Volume 2 was a solid addition to the first one, building on each of the characters, explaining how some of the world works, and being damn fun while driving the story forward all at the same time!
Really the character interactions and growth are what makes this one shine!

I may read it, but I might not. I might just start reading the light novel.

Nope, I read it. Read it in one sitting. Omg, I really liked it. I just think they're leaving out quite the bit. But, I can't wait for volume three!

I cannot tell if it's the art or the writing, but the manga for the Suzumiya Haruhi series really doesn't seem to capture the same magic that the anime does, at least not thus far. I'm curious to see how the original novels will suit my taste.

We get a lot more information in this one. This is where it starts getting good. I enjoyed this one just because I did get to see the bigger picture on how he was picked to help her. I'm looking forward to see what happens next.
