An earthquake suddenly hits the Village of the Blue Dragon, and Yona and her friends are trapped! Will Yona manage to escape safely? And will the Blue Dragon join her on her journey? Meanwhile, Gija senses the presence of the Green Dragon!
"I need you to remember that I'm king Il's daughter. Even if everyone else in the kingdom forgets."
in this fifth volume, we see yona and her crew searching for a third dragon. with white and blue at her side, they believe the green dragon will be at the port town. but upon arriving, yona starts to see the world that her father ruled differently. how people and towns were/are suffering under his power and choices to do nothing, and this is this first installment we really get to see yona thinking about the leader she would like to be.
i loved the blue dragon and the power of names, i love hak and yona and every conversation they have, and i just really still love ao with my whole heart. this wasn't my favorite installment, which feels extra wrong to say because this one has some pretty cool pirates, but i am still so happy i decided to start this series in 2023 and i can't wait to keep continuing on!
trigger and content warnings: sickness, assault, unwanted touching with threat of more, human trafficking, slavery, violence.
This fifth volume of the series was super fun, I actually think it was one of the funniest ones so far, I loved it!! I really enjoyed reading the interactions of the group with Sinha, they were all very sweet as well. It's lovely to see Sinha discover the world and interaction with other people, I feel like he'll have a great development throughout the story! He really left an impression on me, in this volume ☺️ I'm super curious about the Green Dragon's reaction to Yona, I can't wait to read the next volume! His opinion about the fate of the Dragon Warriors is definitely different so far, but I also think it might make the narrative more interesting! This series is really nice 🥹
Princess Yona is the pampered daughter of her kingdom's king. Isolated and doted on she has two childhood friends, Hak, a general who also protects her and her cousin, Soo-won who helped her mourn her mother's passing and who she is crushing on big time. On her 16th birthday her entire world implodes to to a crippling betrayal... She must decide if she will fall in line or rise up and take back her kingdom.
Coming into Yona of the Dawn vol 5 I still find the covers rather ugly but the internal art is so damn gorgeous. I can see the mangaka has hit a confident stride with the art and everything is crisp and and sure in the design department.
I'm totally loving Hak and his relationship with the next dragon... the green dragon! I also love that the blue dragon sees Gija as an older brother... I really would love to see these bromances bloom and be explored in the quiet, plotless moments in the manga. It was so adorable Yona and Yun bonding over shared fear and naming the blue dragon... But its Hak's moments with Yona that I treasure! He has feelings that as her boundaries widen aren't able to be kept contained. We saw that in this volume yet her request makes total sense too!
Hahhaha I just loved how they meet the green dragon (yes, it has to do with Hak!) And the plot they get embroiled in is fascinating. Of course its all about convincing the green dragon that he does want to be bound to his master as a dragon knight but I can see that Yona will also be doing some major growing in the course of this plot!! I really love that and how the old lady pushed her hard.
The tension is still lower than I'd like. Yes we chased the green dragon around but you knew how it'd end. I want the tension to ratchet up some as we seriously can't guess how they'll get out of this ____ problem... so far that hasn't happened yet but when it does this will be a perfectly enjoyable series!
I am excited for the next volume of Yona of the Dawn...
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity ⋆ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

3.5 stars. In this volume, Princess Yona, Hak, The White Dragon, The Blue Dragon and Yun continue their journey to find The Green Dragon. Yona feels let down by the fact that people think her father was a bad King. He always accepted the harsh demands of his enemies in order to refrain from waging wars. The Green Dragon however is a rebellious young man who has no interest in giving up his own dreams to serve another person... I can't wait to know what'll happen in the next volume! I'm definitely starting to like this more and more.
our group has found the green dragon but is having trouble convincing him to join their party… at least there is some sort of inconvenience! finally, lol…
What I'm about to say will defeat the whole purpose of this series, but man do I want Jaeha to just stay a pirate and never become a dragon. Let that man be free!!! LOL! (I'll blame my love of One Piece for the influence because a pirate should always be free according to Luffy. LOL!)
Now that I've shared that, this was a really good volume! I'm not sure what the turning point was, but I found myself a lot more interested and invested in the story, even if I'm still not that interested in Yona as a character still. I have to wonder (if at least for now) the high love for this series is that because the guys together ARE a fun and interesting bunch?
I won't say his name (because #spoilers), but I LOVEEEE the Blue Dragon! He is so precious and while I want these dragons not to feel obligated by blood to protect Yona, I am excited he has joined her crew and even said her name. Jaeha may be SUPER cool, but Blue Dragon for the win all around!
There is definitely starting to be growth in Yona and see how her goal to only keep her friends safe will change. The port town they are at and Yona's reactions are I think only the beginning to her wanting to help ALL people, not just her friends. And with that said, I really love how again she was only wanting the dragons to protect her friends first. She is actually interacting with the people and seeing their views and hear their words, which makes her arcing story I think be more powerful in how it wasn't just because she was a princess who wanted to protect her people. Good stuff!
I LOVED the conversation at the end of this volume! It makes me laugh a little bit because a said character's moment is coming and not sure if he is going to eat his words or not (I surely hope not!), but I deeply admire how he is fighting back what is expected of him simply because of his blood. (Though that probably sounds contradictory to me liking that Gija was so willing to embrace being a dragon and I think that some of that is because I resonate with his desire to help.)
While volume three has been my favorite, this would be a second good close one to what I've enjoyed most so far.
I really like the characters, the dragons, the thunder beast, pretty boy, they are all great. But I can't stand Yona. She tries to be strong but makes poor choices and I am just so freaking heartless that I am completely over all the waterworks. She cries ALL THE TIME. Its been 5 volumes, I really thought she would grow a pair already. Again... I am heartless...
I'll do a proper review now. I should have done it on volume 1 but I was not in my proper reviewer self last night. I was exhausted and sleep-deprived. I would say that this series began as something to kill time while waiting for Spy X Family Episode 3 (if I don’t do anything while waiting for the clock to strike 23:00 I'll drift to sleep without my knowing). Who knows that the first volume was such an amazing opening for this series! Now, I'm hooked for real.
The Japanese mangas (and the adapted animation ones) that we read and watch today, and even the ones a generation ago (like Card Captor Sakura and Rurouni Kenshin) that we all loved dearly all incorporated European cultures in at least one or two panels if not every page of the main series. This has been going on for generations now, but I guess we find it normal because it's their current lifestyle now and it's our lifestyle too. We find French or British characters appearing with tea and croissant as if it's typical and there's nothing wrong with it. I appear as one observer that thinks nothing wrong of it. And there isn’t. There's nothing wrong with appreciating and adapting a race's culture.
Like, take a look, for example, the Spy X Family's premise is loosely based on Europe, and their names are all in English. And it's all just fine. But what I find unusual is how people are weirded out about Yona of the Dawn's premise being Korean when in turn the writer is Japanese. Why the trouble to use Korean when you're Japanese, they ask.
Is this Eurocentrism that's driving us to be okay with anything Europe but turn our backs on our own continent? Or the Anglo people to question why this series is not Japanese as a whole but gets a thumbs up when given something that is their culture? I find that rude. What is the difference? I don’t see any. Aren’t they just the same. Mizuho Kusanagi and Tatsuya Endo are only respecting the land they used as a material for their stories. I hope people finally see it that way.
I have nothing against Europe, I adored their literature and entertainment too. And I have nothing against Japan for incorporating European culture into their lifestyle. There's nothing wrong with respecting and appreciating one's culture. It's just that I found only a small quantity of series that used Asia as a whole material for their stories. This series is one of those, and the other that reminds me (I think of Chinese influence) is Fushigi Yuugi. And it's refreshing to see that I can still find a purely Asian content in some mangas. Isn’t it wonderful to find source material like that? Like we are echoing what our ancestors stand up for. Isn’t are own cultural appreciation in turn? I guess it's just new and original for me to see people breaking from the usual.
Going back to his volume, the search for other dragons of the myth continues. As Sinha (the blue dragon) joined the group, Jaeha (the green dragon) finally came face to face with Yona despite all his efforts in avoiding the gang. I can't wait for the next volume! This series is really a precious gem. I can now totally understand why people are saying this is better than Fushigi Yuugi. The characters' arcs are so wholesome and pure. It's very impactful and raw that it brought me to tears.
I love the group dynamics so far! And why is Gija so freaking beautiful? I'm dying of nosebleed!!
"My desire to live and your desire to live... no one gets to say they don't matter! So I'm going to break out of this darkness and I swear I'll take you some place where you can spread your arms out and just be the blue dragon you're meant to be!"
It’s been a while since I last read Akatsuki no Yona, and reading it in physical format for the first time has been such a great experience. I’ve read the series online before, but collecting the volumes has been a slow process—especially since I struggled to find Volume 5 for so long. I was stuck at Volume 4, even though I had some of the later ones (which, unfortunately, have already started tanning before I even got to read them). I barely remembered where the last volume left off, but as soon as I started reading, my memory kicked in, and I was pulled right back into the story. This volume had everything I love about Yona of the Dawn: humor, emotional depth, and the ever-growing strength of its heroine.
General Hak continues to be an absolute scene-stealer. His comedic timing is perfect, and his sudden, off-the-wall comments always make me laugh. But what I love most is his dynamic with Yona—everyone else can call her by her name, but she insists that Hak still address her as "Princess." It’s such a small but powerful detail, showing how she still holds onto her past, even as she grows into a new version of herself. And Hak, for all his teasing and reckless bravery, respects that. Their relationship is such a beautifully complex mix of loyalty, history, and unspoken emotions, and this volume continues to develop that in a way that feels natural and compelling.
Beyond their interactions, the story takes on a heavier tone as it delves into the harsh realities of Yona’s kingdom. The human trafficking storyline is especially painful to witness, and Yona’s growing awareness of her own powerlessness is heartbreaking. She carries so much grief for the state of her country, and even though she’s still struggling to find her place in the world, her determination to change things is palpable. This volume perfectly captures why Yona of the Dawnis such an incredible series—it balances humor, action, and deeply emotional storytelling, making every chapter feel important. Reading it again reminds me why I fell in love with the series in the first place, and I can’t wait to continue collecting and rereading the volumes.
October 2025 Reread: Well at least I read them in the correct order this time; the perks to owning all the volumes instead of getting them from the library, lol. (Though I HIGHLY recommend using your library! People just aren’t always the greatest at returning things on time in my area…)
I do remember not caring as much for this volume the first time (even though I never said anything about that), but not so this time—probably because I actually read them in order this time, lol…

July 2021 Review: Major whiplash! I just read Volume 30 then jumped WAY back in time to this one where Sinha hasn’t even officially joined them yet, Jaeha just gets into the picture, and Zeno isn’t even there! (well, he probably is, actually, we’re just not aware of it 😆) Even the art is slightly different in this one compared to the newest ones which just shows how the mangaka has grown in her skills and the characters have grown up (and is it only me who thinks Hak and Jaeha look strangely young here?)
I loved finally seeing where Jaeha’s from and the start of the pirate arc and how Hak is always seriously annoyed with him. Which is so funny as I know later how their friendship turns out, so it’s really fun to read this with that hindsight. 😆 And them hating their Wanted posters…is there some law in fiction that says peoples’ Wanted posters can’t be accurate? #theycantgetmynoseright #tangledfan 😜
And OF COURSE Jaeha’s downfall of being found by the others is being stuck in a pot. 🤣 That’s just par for the course for the Happy Hungry Bunch after all! Though what he said to Gija was just plain mean—really Jaeha? At least you do apologize in the future…
Love this volume, and the cover is so PRETTY!!! 😍😍😍

I'm enjoying it, and loving the art. It hasn't overcome my resistance to YA fantasy, and/or distinguished itself from the many, many "gather a party of loyal friends" stories just like it yet. I've got the first ten volumes, so that's how long it has to win me over.
Yona of the Dawn Volume 5 is currently my first and only 5-star read of the year. Not much happens, but I still just sank back into this world and characters with such a sense of comfort? It felt so good to be immersed in the gorgeous artwork. Because I’ve been watching a little bit of anime, it honestly made the manga come to life in my head even more!
On that note, we get to meet the Green Dragon and oh my gosh do I love him. He’s absolutely hilarious and really rather pretty. We get to understand more of the shy Blue Dragon as well! Overall, while this was slow plot-wise, the characters shone so brightly in this volume that I couldn’t help falling in love with it. We also got a lot of Hak so y’know.
We met Jae-Ha, the Green Dragon, his character took me some getting used to when I watched the anime, but overall, I like the character. The pirate arc is in the next volume and I am looking forward to that. It's my favorite arc, Yona has some great character development during that arc. We're getting close to the end of the volumes that were part of the anime, and I am excited to read what comes after vol. 8, the last one used for the anime. I can't wait to read those, it will be 100% new content.
4 ⭐️ the hunt for the dragon warriors continues but I’m not in love with this very early 2000’s depiction of the stereotypical sinister/predatory gay or bi character.
Yona and part of the gang are stuck in a cave in, Hak freaks out but manages to dig them out. She’s then successful in recruiting blue dragon and he’s named Sinha and I love him. They head to a port town to find green dragon who’s a pirate and refuses to embrace his dragon duty. Town is sus with shady leader, volume ends with Jaeha trying to recruit Hak and running into Yona.
