Rate this book

Jodi Picoult is a writer who has dealt with weighty issues through her writings. In her 2 novels; Perfect Match and My Sister’s Keeper, she has dealt with important issues such as child sexual abuse and teenagers with leukemia. Now, to most, Jodi Picoult’s new novel about racism ( Small Great Things ) was one of the toughest and most touching novel she’s written.
Small Great Things is a story of racism in our modern time and day. Ruth Jefferson is labor and delivery nurse who is an African American. When working, Ruth had her usual checkup on a newborn. Ruth was reassigned to another patient because the white parents did not want an African American to touch their child. The hospital complies but it was only the next day and Ruth was alone with the child and the child was in cardiac distress. What should and what did Ruth do? Obey or disobey?

This book is a unique standing by its own. In Small Great Things, Jodi tackles one of the most important yet challenging concerns throughout human history and even in our modern prejudice, race and justice. How will this book turn out to be? What lessons does it convey? Find out more…

I read this along with my wife. I really was taken by the author's incredible ability to give us such insight into each of them. The book spent large white space on drawing you in to the personal lives of the main characters and others. I give her 10 plus on the character sketches.
The plot drug... I thing to give the reader some mind wandering avenues to guess the outcome even though some were a little too simple.
Never the less-- I give great credit to her underscoring the lingering hate and bias that still plaques our country as well as an insight to how it effects the abuser and the recipient. well done.
the missing star came from the Pollyanna ending-- which in my humble opinion was just TOO MUCH.

This is the first book I have read by this author. I picked it up to read after I saw several posts on it. I knew the story would not be easy for me to handle, but I was drawn to read it.

This was a well written, thought provoking book. I think the story displayed both sides of the issues very well. It held my interest from beginning to the end and I would recommend it highly.

I was intensely moved by this story. As a woman of color, I felt that Ms. Picoult caught the depth of feelings involved and she was able to dig down deep into black-white relations today. It is a precarious path we trod when engaging intimately with the opposite race. It was intelligently done. s It was enlightening and I am please with the result. I would recommend to all.

This had the potential to be 5 stars until the last couple of chapters. I was not impressed with the ending. It was all quite unrealistic.

I read this book a few years ago and now in reflection, Small Great Things, made a profound effect on me. This book lead me down a path of educating myself on the history of BIPOC and facing some hard truths.

The review I had written on my notes was that it was very touching and challenging to read. I found the storyline of being positioned in extremist shoes very very uncomfortable. It is the hard reality of racism then and today. It was very thought-provoking. Definitely recommending.

Excellent blending and building of perspectives. Necessary messages for most of us to take in. I recommend it to all. Use it for a church or community book club?
