I read this along with my wife. I really was taken by the author's incredible ability to give us such insight into each of them. The book spent large white space on drawing you in to the personal lives of the main characters and others. I give her 10 plus on the character sketches. The plot drug... I thing to give the reader some mind wandering avenues to guess the outcome even though some were a little too simple. Never the less-- I give great credit to her underscoring the lingering hate and bias that still plaques our country as well as an insight to how it effects the abuser and the recipient. well done. the missing star came from the Pollyanna ending-- which in my humble opinion was just TOO MUCH.
More than just a great story...this book is an enlightening read for anyone who cares about the VERY DIFFERENT experiences & perspectives of Americans born with skin that isn't white.
This is the first book I have read by this author. I picked it up to read after I saw several posts on it. I knew the story would not be easy for me to handle, but I was drawn to read it.
This was a well written, thought provoking book. I think the story displayed both sides of the issues very well. It held my interest from beginning to the end and I would recommend it highly.
I was intensely moved by this story. As a woman of color, I felt that Ms. Picoult caught the depth of feelings involved and she was able to dig down deep into black-white relations today. It is a precarious path we trod when engaging intimately with the opposite race. It was intelligently done. s It was enlightening and I am please with the result. I would recommend to all.
I read this book a few years ago and now in reflection, Small Great Things, made a profound effect on me. This book lead me down a path of educating myself on the history of BIPOC and facing some hard truths.
The review I had written on my notes was that it was very touching and challenging to read. I found the storyline of being positioned in extremist shoes very very uncomfortable. It is the hard reality of racism then and today. It was very thought-provoking. Definitely recommending.
Excellent blending and building of perspectives. Necessary messages for most of us to take in. I recommend it to all. Use it for a church or community book club?
