Elanor of Onyx, enslaved by the dragons who scorched her kin and country, is determined to escape her island prison.
When the changeling dragon, Adom, demands that Elanor come with him to the mainland on a secret mission, she sees the opportunity she’s been waiting for—a chance to exact her revenge. But when his actions take a surprising twist, Elanor begins to suspect that maybe things are not as they seem.
With a plot brewing against the mainland king, alliances are tested and Elanor discovers a secret that will forever change the way she views the slithering dragons—and herself.
Dragons? Shifters? Revenge and plots? Of course I signed the fuck up for this!
I was so excited for Slither, though I had to put off reading it for a bit with a sickness making the rounds and unable to concentrate. Once I got into it though, it flew by.
Of course there’s more to the situation than Elanor knows. Her being so naive and oblivious at first was a bit frustrating. I didn’t know or guess everything right away but it made me itchy waiting for her to clue in.
Soon she got her head in the game though, when she made a move and was finally included in the plotting, it was fantastic! She got things and was so capable. But then missed some pretty obvious clues again. Like talking about the old man, the riddler, the hostage? Come on!
I LOVED Patience! She reminds me of another character by the same name in the Elderling Realm. I really hope my ship for her sets sail in the next book *crosses fingers*
I like Adom and his plans for the dragons, though he has to know he can’t run both areas without a second. I wonder if someone will come up in the next installment to help?
The changeling’s abilities were obviously convenient. ‘Oh, if only we could do [this] but that’s not possible, no one can do that. [Hit roadblock] Guess what the next changeling can do!? *shock* Okay, it wasn’t story killing or anything, but felt clunky and amateurish with the execution.
I did not see the ending reveals coming and am dying to know what happens next with Elanor and Patience.
Great dragon fantasy, with a realm I want to know more about with the Sun setup, plots I want to follow, and ships I want to sail. If only it wasn’t so obviously and clunky with the plotting….
I received a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
I’m going to let my geek flag fly for a minute. I love dragons. Dragons are the coolest mythical creature in my opinion. I mean, they fly, they are practically impervious to injury, they have cool spikey things on their heads and backs, AND they breathe fire. Think a unicorn could stand up to that? If you love dragons, too, you must read this novel. You’ll get more dragons than you can keep up with and each with their own “abilities”!
The plot of Slither is complex and complicated. This isn’t a cheesy read. Elanor finds herself knee deep in a twisted mystery with plenty of deceit and secrets. Set against a land where ancient dragons coexist with humans, the novel is almost like an alternate history. The medieval world of Trana could easily be part of Great Britain. Though there are hints of romance, it’s not a romance, and it doesn’t have the full-immersion of high fantasy.
This novel would have been perfect for me if there had been more romance. I so wanted more of Adom or even the hunky King Siles, but Elanor’s feelings for Adom run from wanting to hurt him to hurting for him. I kept waiting for the sigh-worthy moment, but unfortunately, I didn’t get it. At times, I had difficulty keeping up with the secrets and who was playing who, but it all works out with a great surprise at the end.
I really enjoyed this book! I loved the characters and there were tons of twists that I didn't see coming. There were a few moments where I thought I had it all figured out, but I was completely wrong. So it made it really fun to read. I enjoyed the plot as well, and I thought it was well written. The plot also felt fresh, which I really appreciated. As a disclaimer, this book was written by one of my librarian co-workers, so that's how I found it. I bought it and read it because I wanted to. And I was glad I did!
I struggled with the first person narrative style for quite some time but the story was engaging enough to pull me through that challenge. At some point I must have gotten used to it because I got drawn into the story and characters. The reading became enjoyable and I can't wait to read more in the series.
Melody's prose has a musical quality I adore! With rich settings, engaging characters, and a strong, capable, and sympathetic protagonist (Eleanor), this story is a must-read for fantasy lovers. There were even a few impossible-to-predict plot twists that kept me reading well past bed-time. I look forward to more of Melody's work.
Melody Steiner is a new author who is worth keeping an eye on! Slither was a fantastic dark fantasy fiction piece and I enjoyed reading it immensely. Looking forward to seeing more stories in the future from this gal :)
