Imagine a 40-page book and you have The 5-Minute Teacher. The design of the Arias series is to provide teachers practical information that could be read in one night and applied the next day. This book does that. There are 3 lists that might provide teachers food-for-thought as well as practical ideas they could implement in tomorrow's lesson: planning, things to include in a lesson and digital tools. Barnes' premise is that teachers "teach" for 5 minutes and student "process" 10-15 (or more). This idea pushes the one that has been around for a while, the 10:2 ratio. With the paperback at $13 and the ebook at $7, I would definitely choose the ebook.

Its nice that this is such a small book. It ends up being a quick read. However, I didn't find it all that helpful. A lot of the ideas here were not new to me. I would have loved more details about how to become a five minute teacher, especially in primary grades. Every example given was from a very intermediate point of view. I can't imagine setting my second graders loose to research vocabulary (which I think is a pretty awesome idea) with half of them struggling to read. I need a primary version of this book.

Very short description on how to structure lessons for 5 minute talk intervals. Highly recommends technology and students working with who they want to work with using phones, computers. Some very good ideas, but I think I may need to scale it back some.

Clear, concise and effective

The takeaway, stop talking. Kids do not want to listen to you. This will give the class a lot more time to work on something fun and creative. Think more like a student then a teacher.
