Once I started this dark crazy journey, I couldn't stop. I was utterly spell bound. The twist and turns... The one liners that had me laughing a little... The characters who are dark and complex... There are so many secrets in this book. You, as the reader, won't know what hit you. I sure as hell didn't know.

I loved the author's dark play on Shakespeare- Romeo and Juliet in the modern era. The tale has been flipped on its head and I don't know what the end result might be. Avery Capulet and Rome Montague of course are from two warring families but that is basically it. By the end of this book, you are still left questioning who is playing who. Who will be left standing between the Capulets and Montagues?

What the actual @#&£!!!!

Why do I seem so surprised by Lilis books? I should know by now that she's not your run of the mill Romance author. You're pretty much guaranteed something extremely dark and brutal yet almost every time it's as though I wasn't expecting to be taken on a journey quite so graphic. Not that I'm complaining in the slightest.

This book, the first in a new series, starts 8 hours ahead where Avery Capulet, daughter of the notorious Augustus Capulet, finds herself kidnapped and believing she is about to die. What eventually transpires is that Avery and Rome Montague were once in love. That is until the death of her sister making Avery the sole heir to the family legacy. The Montagues were once the Capulet's rival family in California. So a happy ever after was never going to be a possibility.

I struggled to truly get a feel for Avery's character and I do believe that had the book been a little longer, I would have got to know her a lot better. I really loved her take no prisoners attitude. I do get a sense that there is more to Avery and the same goes for Rome.

I would describe this book as the modern day Romeo & Juliet and I know as time goes on throughout this series, more and more things will become clear. I just didn't think this book was long enough to really get across the true perspective, but in the meantime the wait is on for the next book which is going to be nothing but pure torture until that day arrives.

Can you believe this is the first book I have read by Lili St Germain!? Well I have to say, after reading this I think I need to go and read everything else she has written. From the first page I was hooked to the story!

Avery Capulet is celebrating her 25th birthday, but she's really not looking forward to her party. With an arranged marriage looming, the evening is looking doomed from the start. And when events happen which lead to things going way out of control, Avery finds herself in a dark, and scary situation.

Rome Montague is a bad boy. A brooding hero of this story (or is he?!) who deals with drugs, alcohol and sex! He is also pretty mysterious and definitely ruthless.

I was hooked to the story. Some parts are rather dark, and incredibly violent, but with all the twists, turns and revelations I was reading this wondering what would happen next. Everything certainly isn't as it seems, but how will this story end?

There is certainly no love or romance in this book!! And at the stage I didn't feel a huge connection between the main characters, but that's to be expected with the way the story leads us.

I love the idea of a modern day retelling of Romeo and Juliet, and this one has darkness running through its veins. There were scenes which left me reeling, no knowing if I was coming or going. It was original and different and I definitely cannot wait for the next book in this series.

She was second-in-line for a throne that her older sister had already been molded to fit. I was the ruins of a family legacy that had soared too high, and crashed spectacularly, the sole survivor of a broken dynasty.

Well...hell. That was certainly...something.

If you've read St. Germain's Gypsy Brothers series, then you already know that her mind can take you to some dark places. The woman's brain is downright devious, and she writes dark and depraved like no one else. Verona Blood may be a modern twist on Romeo and Juliet, and while it certainly focuses on two star-crossed lovers, there's not much love that shines through in this story just yet.

The first in the series throws you deep into the underbelly of organized crime and the sacrifices made for family in blood. It's gritty as hell. It's violent and spares no detail. If you've read ANY book this author has written before, you'll know that she's not afraid to go there. And boy does she in this book.

Verona Blood introduces Avery Capulet, as she faces the ultimate reality of being forced to marry a man that she doesn't love for the good of her family and the order of her father. Avery is headstrong and willful, but she's not about to say no to her father. But a sick twist of fate lands her in the sights of a psychopath, and then her nightmare truly begins.
In my wildest dreams —or my most terrifying nightmares —never once did I think that I’d be trapped in hell with him.>

I'll admit, there were parts of this book that were extremely difficult to read. And I've read some dark books. But what I truly appreciate about Germain's writing, is she doesn't do it for shock value. The depravity and violence truly serves to drive the plot forward, and as dark as it may be, it fits. This book is no walk in the park. It's damn disturbing. But color me officially hooked.

In the style of her Gypsy Brothers, this is more of a novella length. I read it in 2.5 hrs and was left with my jaw on the floor by the end. It was long enough to hook you, yet short enough to leave you craving more. I'm equally curious and terrified to see what the next book in this series will reveal.

Lili St. Germain's most anticipated book Verona Blood is A dark tale of Shattered hearts and captured souls.

Lili's modern retelling of Romeo and Juliet is phenomenal, her writing is impeccable and truly worth the wait.

Buckle up, sit back and get ready because Lili is about to take you on dark ride through California's criminal underworld.

This book may not be suitable for safe readers. It contains, drugs, violence and Rape. If these are triggers for you steer clear.

Verona Blood is full of suspense, twists and turns and pulls at your heartstrings. It contains love, lies and deception.

Avery Capulet is getting ready to celebrate her 25th birthday, what's ment to be a happy celebration for her ends up becoming her doom in more ways than one.

Rome Montague is the boy next door, betrayed by Avery a few years ago his hatred for her grew. He loved her at one point in their lives but getting thrown in jail for 2 years for a crime he didn't commit turned him into a notorious drug dealer, criminal and thief. Always scheming and planning ahead Rome finds himself in a situation he didn't see coming.

"Hate keeps you strong
Love. Makes. You. Weak."

I can't say much more without giving anything away. All I can say is GET READY for that cliffhanger ending!!

This is my favorite Lili read to date!! If I could rate it any higher I would

Can't wait for the next book.

‘Hell is empty and all the devils are here.’
~William Shakespeare

This quote by Shakespeare perfectly describes the decadent and deviant setting of Lili St. Germain’s newest release, Verona Blood, as well as the corrupt nature of those who not only reside in the underbelly of San Francisco, California, but who hold dominion over it, asserting their power due to their position, their bank accounts, and most importantly a bloodline that requires absolute devotion regardless of the personal sacrifices that have to be made.

Despite Avery Capulet’s independent nature and her need to marry for love rather than obligation, it’s her father’s dictates that she must vow to obey, which means that as the sole heir to the Capulet fortune, Avery’s forced to give up her freedom and any hope that she’d be able to live her life for herself and no one else.

But Avery Capulet isn’t the only person in a hellish situation; in fact, she’s responsible for the social and economical degradation of someone who was once her friend and ally, and in a cruel twist of fate, Avery and her bitter enemy, Rome Montague, find themselves at the mercy of sadistic bastards hellbent on making both of them suffer for sins they don’t quite understand.

There’s quite a large list of Capulet enemies, so it’s difficult to ascertain who’s behind the latest attack on this powerful family, but what is easy to understand is the fact that this is only the beginning of Avery’s captivity and torture, and while it’s not completely clear what Rome’s role is in this newest Capulet curse, what’s quite evident is that the reprehensible devils that surround Avery and Rome don’t plan to let up anytime soon.

As a high school English teacher, I adore romance stories that are loosely based off of the Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, and while St. Germain’s Verona Blood is set in contemporary society, every component of the story line that makes reference to Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers and those responsible for helping or hurting the pair make the story that much more masterful, and I desperately need book two so that Rome and Avery have a chance to change their fate, one way or another.

There’s a reason that Lili St. Germain is a USA Today Bestselling Author; she can write the shit out of dark romance, and time and time again, she successfully takes her characters and her readers on one hell of a messed up journey - one where they must maneuver through a series of twists and turns that keep them guessing right up to the story’s resolution or should I say cliffhanger.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Avery Capulet is a girl who should have it all. She’s got the looks, the elite education, the money, and comes from a family that operates in the upper echelons of society. Her family also happens to be the most prolific crime family on the west coast. But having everything doesn’t mean having it all. When choices are made for you ‘for the good of the family’ and your life isn’t really your own due to your birthright, sometimes all you can hope for is for it to all be gone.

Rome Montague used to have it all. He’s definitely got the looks, he went to the best school, he had the money, and his family rubbed shoulders right along with the Capulets. But when the forked tongue of a liar throws him under the bus and takes away the only life he’s ever known, his world becomes clouded with hate and he embraces the darkness.

So what happens when these two one-time lovers have to table their feud in order to face a common enemy? Well, that’s the wonderful story that Lili St. Germain has started to develop in Verona Blood. Imagine being trapped in a room with the person who hates you the most, all while being tormented by faceless and voiceless people? Oh and your stuck in virtual darkness with them watching you through cameras and a two-way mirror.

This was a real page-turner. The author sucks you in right from the start with a prologue that serves as a huge omen as to the horror to be found in this tale. It would be hard to categorize this story as a romance because there was more terror than love running amok. To be honest, this story is creepy as heck and I loved pretty much everything about it. Avery drove me a bit nuts with her childish antics and spoiled princess behavior, but I guess that was to be expected. I’m loving getting to know Rome and I can’t wait to discover even more about him and how he and Avery fare as I get further twisted by the story to come in the rest of the California Blood series.

To me. This reads like a super duper long prologue. Essentially meaning it’s just the beginning AND we get a lot of back story, but probably not all of it. We learn about Avery Capulet. We learn a bit about Rome Montague, and then some other people who I pretty much can’t stand or don’t know enough about to make a decision on. What I got from this book is that I feel TERRIBLE for Avery, and her life thus far. I’m pretty sure that I feel bad for Rome too. You could even venture to say their lives have been pretty... tragic. See what I did there?

Anyway. This is a Romeo & Juliet retelling that takes a sharp veer to the left. If you love retelling, but you want something with a different/darker feel then this is definitely it.

It time jumps a bit. It repeats scenes from alternative point of views, and it ends in a cliffhanger. Those may be turn offs for some people, but they were fine for me. Ready for book two!

TW kidnapping and sexual assault

This book was so...odd. The first half of this book set up a lot of background for our heroine and felt like a completely different book. Then, the heroine is kidnapped and this feels like a different story. We quickly learn that there is actually someone from her past that is going to be the actual love interest. This person, though, wasn't discussed in the first 60% and instead we learn about the guy she's dating and the guy she's supposed to marry. What?? The beginning of this book felt like it was part of a story that had nothing to do with the second half of this book. I was so intrigued by the end, though, that I kind of want to read more? I just wish the book started at that point and we skipped all of the unnecessary drama that had nothing to do with the actual conflict of this book.

What I thought this was going to be: a dark Romeo and Juliet retelling.

What it actually was: explicit kidnapping, torture and rape with no Romeo or Juliet in sight.

The only thing they retained from the original story is their last names. In a way this is a good thing, because the book is terrible, no need to ruin Shakespeare further.

Juliet Avery doesn't read like a 25 year old heroine at all. She's spoiled and bratty, as one would suspect and even, dare I say, likable at the beginning. That quickly changes the longer we're in her head.

But I did feel for her, when it seemed like everything was going wrong with her crazy father who wanted to marry her off to her dead sister's fiancé, she had to break up with her 8 year (violent) boyfriend and deal with learning her eggs have been harvested (oddly enough, not the worst thing that happens in the book).

The point where it really goes wrong is her kidnapping. Is kidnapping meant to be nice? No, of course not. But if this was meant to be a romantic story (as it's marketed) then you can't write it like this. You just can't.

There's no reason why the rape happened, it doesn't add to the plot and it's really explicit. And disgusting. And plain wrong. It's romanticised in a way and I am not here for that shit. Also there's no warning.

Apart from the themes mentioned above, there's also suicide which wasn't handled well. Is that a surprise? At this point, no.

The relationship between Avery and Rome is barely mentioned until they're put in a specific situation together which doesn't match the blurb. And even then it's nothing special, no sparks, nothing.

I'm supposed to feel the hate that Rome is feeling towards her and all I felt was emptiness. Her family ruined his? Sent him to prison for something he didn't do? So what? Who cares? Not me.

I think it says a lot that I'm more interested in Avery's father than either of the main leads. He was written decently at least. And Will wasn't too bad all things considered, I at least strongly disliked him.

We got a random P.O.V. from an FBI agent somewhere in the middle maybe, he also didn't seem experienced and his P.O.V. wasn't needed, especially when we didn't see him before.

This book is a huge disappointment. I expected so much from it. Within the first three chapters I even thought I'd read book two, but now I won't. And I suggest you don't either unless if this is your kind of thing, then by all means, go ahead.

Love. Makes. You. Weak.

Dall’altra parte c’è Rome Montague.

Yay for me! I just loved this authors writing and the idea of this book but I wanted so much more! I wanted to feel the hatred and rivalry between the families that sadly I just didn’t get. Some parts were a little all over the place and I had to go back and re-read to try and make sense of it. I didn’t feel a connection between Rome and Avery at all.

“Hours ago, I was joking about how being married off was a fate worse than death. But I didn’t really mean those words, because I’d do anything to stop the slow, methodical slice of the knife’s teeth against my skin. I scream as my skin splits open, the knife impossibly sharp, my skin impossibly fragile.
It’s so obvious now. This faceless man doesn’t want a ransom. He wants my terror. My blood.
He wants my life.”
- Avery Capulet

——

“If I had to tell you what kind of person I am, I’d say I’m the very worst. I’ve done plenty of things that I’d rather forget. Things that I can avoid thinking about until that moment when I close my eyes at night and it all comes flooding back, an avalanche of blood and screams. There’s a reason I live alone, in a ruined house that I once tried to burn down. There’s a reason people don’t want to get close to me.
I’m bad. Bad news. Bad blood. Whatever you want to call it, however you want to spin it: I’m a disease that nobody wants to catch.”

I like my shit dark, but I don't like my shit with OM or OW.
The whole chapter 2 is one fat sex scene with OM. It was so explicit I thought the guy was actually the hero, lol. I wish. Disgusting.
Apparently this was not enough, so there's also an explicit rape scene while the hero watches. Delightful, delightful book.
You can write dark without rape, you know that, right? It's really an insult to all the authors who write about rape because they actually want to say something.

My God, nonsense crap.
Thank fuck it was free. Stay away from this shit.

"Never sin against your family, because in our religion, there is no forgiveness. There is only loyalty, or death."

Lili St. Germain is one of the few authors whose books I'll blindly pick up. She always comes with interesting plot-lines and characters. What she in particularly excels in is creating the perfect anti-hero. She always delivers great dark romances that feed my gray soul. Verona Blood is a great start to the California Blood series. It started out with a bang and I loved everything that happened in this book, the good and the bad. Lili does such an incredible job in setting the mood, and the characters just fit the story perfectly. This book was a pretty quick read, and the end left me wanting more. However, I think she has so much more in store for us in the upcoming book(s).

"Being complicit in the downfall of somebody you used to love burns hotter than any sickness can touch you."

I loved that the history between Avery and Rome was explained in pieces, instead of one huge chunk. Which I thought was a smart move, because this is the first book and sometimes I like to be kept in suspense. The build-up was great and it gave me enough time to connect to the characters, and understand a bit more of their backgrounds and personalities. The writing was great, the book was dark enough and all the things that already happened in Verona Blood has me even more excited to see what will happen next. I am so intrigued by many characters in this book, and I can't wait to see which direction Lili will take this book. She is know to throw some crazy plot twists the readers way, so I am expecting crazy things to happen in the upcoming books.

No one writes like Lili St. Germain and that’s just the truth. She writes dark and gritty in such a way that you feel it on your skin. It’s bloody, gristly and she goes past the dark places. She spares nothing! This is a Romeo & Juliet retelling with a dark and delicious twist. This ends on quite a cliffhanger so I’m so glad all the books are out!!

Verona Blood wasn't what I was expecting at all. I love when an author throws curveballs/wrenches into my expectations, it makes for a much more enjoyable reading experience.

I will admit that I didn't love everything that went down in this book but man what a riveting story it was. My eyes were practically glued to the pages. I devoured it in about three hours and have absolutely no regrets of reading it that quickly or ignoring everything and everyone around. I just couldn't wait to find out what happened next, I'm still going to be waiting since it ended on a cliffy. I am so ready for the second book in this series. I hope the wait isn't too long because I might not survive it.

I definitely recommend it to all lovers of dark romance.

Update: Feb 27- Why am I actually shocked and disappointed this is not going to be released today? Why am I surprised to see another new release date? Ohhh, I'm actually not anymore.

Feb 13-
I'm not happy. I've loved everything I've written by this author but nothing seems to release at the date its originally expected. Personally, I'm tired of this. I get excited, the date arrives, I go to buy it, the date has been pushed back AGAIN.
This book was to release 1/30/18 then 2/13/18. Now it says 2/28/18.
I love her work so I know I'll still read it but I feel like I'm being treated unfairly somehow.

Highly anticipated, Verona Blood didn't disappoint and I'm so glad that Lili St Germain took the time she needed in order to deliver this beautiful baby!

I've been finished for 2 days now, and am still feeling from the  perfection of this story. Don't ask me what it is about in detail, I won't tell you, dear readers. What I can tell you is that it's a revisited version of Romeo and Juliet. But what a corrosive version! In the best way, of course.

The tone is dark, from the beginning you'll get how f****ed up the atmosphere is.  Drugs, alcohol, sex in the most improbable ot the places, you'll be thrown into Avery's world and the fall will be violent!  The journey is a whirlwind of craziness, sometimes gruesome; if you need a warning, be careful: if you have triggers, you might feel a little....uncomfortable here. But the feeling was so good!

The intricate story is full of twists and revelations; I'm still wondering what happened here. Hello mindf**k, meet sarcasm in a heady cocktail!

The words drip with venom, laced with dangerous smiles. Avery is a badass heroine, and it takes one to deal with all the men that surround her. Will, Josh, Nathan, Enzo, Augustus... and of course ROME! Such multi-layered characters...I can't wait to find out what their games are!

I tried, and failed, to put together the pieces of that giant puzzle. I came up with somany theories... but BOUM... Verona Blood blew my mind.

Well done Lili St Germain!

This is probably going to be a rambling mess. My mind is reeling right now, and I feel like it is moving at the speed of light trying to think about all the possibilities.

4 I'M BEING TOYED WITH CROWNS

I love dark romances. Crave them. I was not, however, prepared for the level of depravity since it is my first foray into the Lili St. Germain world, and I am not just talking violence. The level of violence I have read before. I am talking about an overall lack of moral characters, unethical decisions, violations against women. This book runs the gamut for being book one in a series, and by chapter 2, my mouth was already gaping in shock.

Normally, this is where character analysis occurs, and I talk about what I liked and didn't like about them, but I honestly feel like I just met them. We have just scratched the surface of who Rome and Avery are. What I have seen, I like. I like Avery's fire, even though I wish she would keep it when it comes to here father, and I love that Rome is lethal and protective. I definitely like where she is taking them as characters.

Fair warning that this is book one of four, so a good portion of Verona Blood is setting up this world. Readers meet a lot of characters, the author gives readers essential backstories for the families, and they get the predicament currently facing Avery Capulet, as well as how Rome Montague plays into this all. A lot happens during this book, and yet, I feel like nothing happened. I know that doesn't make sense, but all I can say is that I was left with a million questions (no, that is not hyperbolic. Well, maybe, but I was left with so many questions), and need them answered ASAP.

Dark romance readers, pick this up! PICK IT UP. It is rare that I cannot figure out what is coming next, who is involved, or how the story is going to play out, but at the end of book one I have nothing but questions. Lili St. Germain has messed with my mind, and my anticipation for book 2 is at an all time high!

So, this did not go the way I thought it was going to go... I will be continuing this trilogy. Maybe not during the Readathon I'm doing right now..

But... woah. This took a turn.

4 stars
And I don't know how to rate the spice.
There isn't any between the couple yet. And that's how I rate spice so...

TW: kidnapping, Rape, gore, death of a parent, mention of suicide.

If I could some this book in one word it would be intense but I've come to expect nothing less from this author.

From the start it grabbed me by the throat and didn't let go in fact at times it strangled the breath from my body. This is a dark twisted tale with inticing characters woven brilliantly
by the author. I read this book in one sitting in fact I'm not sure I moved from the chair once.

It was fantastic, addictive and compelling and with a cliffy to end all cliffhangers. I need more ASAP.

WHOA! OMG! HOLY F**K!!! Verona Blood . . . what the hell?!? What did I just read?!? What did new-to-me author, Lili Saint Germain, do to me?!? GAH!!! What a wild roller coaster of a dark romance ride! There is a thin line between love and hate, and I both loved and hated this dark romance, the darkest of dark romances. Verona Blood stuck a knife in me, wounding me again and again!!!

This book held me hostage from the very first page. Barely into this book and I was already broken! I could not stop holding my breath—breathless from the intensity that surrounded me like an angry mob. This story struck me so hard, a sensory blow, where my emotions exploded all over the pages. I wanted to stop reading at times because—like the most powerful of orgasms—this book was too much for me to bear after feeling so hard. I was such a GONER!

Told through Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Verona Blood is the story of feuding families, fated love, and forever debt. The heroine and hero are both brave and badass, unafraid to dip into the dark to find the light. That light?!? It was hard to find, hidden in the depths of darkness in this book, but when a sliver of that light shone, it was that much sweeter.

Like a shard of glass, Verona Blood glitters and shines, then cuts deep in a darkly mesmerizing journey. Humming with rich descriptions, razor-sharp intelligence, and raw horror, this tale is so terrifyingly thrilling and dangerously addicting. You’ll be hard-pressed to stop inhaling this dark delight, one that will haunt you long after the last page.

Verona Blood sank me into the dark so deeply that my soul shattered and my heart was hit so hard so hard that I nearly begged for mercy. MERCY!!! What an INCREDIBLY INTENSE and ACHINGLY ADDICTIVE adventure that I didn’t want to end! I’m still in the biggest state of bewilderment and BOOK BLISS. I’m still REELING from this riveting roller coaster of a romance’s aftermath. I NEED MORE NOW!

4.5 decadently dark and deadly 💋s

You guys!! WHAT DID I JUST READ? Lili St. Germain just rocked my world. OMG this novel was fabulous. It was sexy and dark and shocking AF!! Good Lord. I'm still trying to process what I read. Rome and Avery had great chemistry and I loved the play on the original story. But now my head is swimming with a million conspiracy theories. I need book two asap!!

Point Blank: this author is flat out brilliant. Her writing style is phenomenal and her way with words leaves me awestruck. Her words are poetic and yet can be sarcastic and powerful at the same time. She has such a magnificent way of writing her characters that you feel like you are right in their head. And the plot??? LEGIT MINDBLOWING. At times I was afraid to read any further because the suspense was killing me. This novel was shocking and intense and filled with blows coming from every direction. Seriously pick up this book! It is outstanding!

All in all this was amazing and I can't wait for more in this series in the future. Bravo! 4.5 stars! ~Ratula
