Maybe I'm biased because I enjoy most (if not all) poetry, but I was thrilled when publisher Red Dashboard sent me an assortment of poetry collections. Coiled Logic was part of that assortment, and I enjoyed this book thoroughly.

Gross writes poems often balanced along the left margin, and makes us of the device of repetition very effectively in several of the titles in this volume (see "Wow!" for just such an example). Sometimes, the words are scattered more freely on the page, as well (see "Assuming A Moment In Matthew's Mind").

My favorite in this collection, which is not slim in nature by any means, was probably "Cathedral Beach," a wonderful example of descriptive poetry digging into one place, or "In Search of Words, A Writer's Block Poem," a poem I will likely share with my composition students (or use as the basis for a writing assignment about overcoming writer's block).

I would gladly read other work by Barry Gross, and I'm glad I had the opportunity to check out Coiled Logic.
