With this volume of Goodnight Punpun I've finally come to the realisation that I do not like Punpun. While a part of me almost admires his ability to literally destroy everything he touches, as I progressed through the pages of Volume 5 I found myself muttering "Punpun, stop being such a dick" over and over again.
My poor opinion of Punpun does in no way reflect the genius of this work. I am utterly obsessed with this series and if there were more than 5 stars in the entity of existence then I would gladly hurl them at Punoun, hoping to embed them into his stupid face like shuriken.
Volume 5 has been my favourite volume so far - which is saying an awful lot. This is mainly due to the return of Aiko as a proper character and not just a fleeting glimpse. Aiko is by far my favourite character and seeing her reunion is both incredibility satisfying and petrifying because I have no doubt that in Volume 6 everything is going to fall to shit. This is not because it has been set up that way in Volume 5, I'm basing this purely on the fact that deep down I think Asano is probably a complete bastard.
A part of me is tempted to go all Misery on Asano's ass if he allows Punpun to ruin Aiko's life, but then I get bogged down by the practicalities. While I'd love to see Japan again, it costs a lot of money to get there, I don't know where Asano lives, who would look after my kids, the list goes on...
The upside is that I don't have to wait long until the crushing despair I'm likely to experience in Volume 6 as someone is translating this manga at an astonishing rate of knots. I want to read more, but I don't want to get to the end.

I’m honestly still so conflicted about this series. I can’t tell whether it’s brilliant, dark, atmospheric... or if it’s just misogynistic, ‘edgy’ BS. As with Downfall by Inio Asano, I can’t tell how self-aware this all is and so I’m left feeling uncomfortable and frustrated. Or is that the point?! 😩

It's been 8 months since I read the previous volume. The delay wasn't by choice; this volume was out of print for a while.
Where do I even begin? Life is messed up.
Punpun and Aiko are deeply scarred by their experiences. All the characters in this story are damaged to some extent. Aren’t we all? Some more than others...
Trauma clings to us longer than we realize, shaping our actions and limiting our potential.
Punpun is a gentle soul. His constant struggle with every situation reveals his unwillingness to harm anyone. Yet, his damage often prevents him from acting as he should or could.
Life sometimes sets us on a collision course that’s hard to avoid. By the time we notice, we’re already speeding toward a wall.
Pain begets more pain until someone is strong enough to choose love.
This series is compelling because it reflects our flawed selves and imperfect relationships, and the struggle to maintain sanity amid the chaos.
I wish Punpun and Aiko could find happiness together, but life rarely ends that way.
Masterpiece. Period.

This week, my entire life has been tied to what Punpun has been doing. Visceral is the name of the game, and at times, this story has been too much for me. I put this one aside for a couple of days, as it was… I want to say disgusting, but without the negative connotations. Disgusting and attractive at the same time. Either way, we’re absolutely spiralling to a finish here, and boy do I need to finish this story. If only to write up my thoughts in full and push it away for a little bit.

Những cảnh hài hước đôi khi xuất hiện rất vui nhộn, nhưng đa số "sự đau thương" lại nhiều hơn. Tất cả những nhân vật bắt đầu mất đi phương hướng và lạc lối, họ cũng thực sự bắt đầu kể câu chuyện của họ. Nhân vật phụ cũng được xây dựng cân bằng.
Punpun mất đi niềm tin trong công việc, hình dạng của Punpun thay đổi liên tục như cách tâm trí hỗn loạn của cậu ấy. Bất kì ai cũng sẽ thay đổi theo thời gian, nhưng có thật vậy không? Như Aiko, cô ấy giấu đi những sự thật về Người mẹ "cuồng tín" và "bạo hành" của cô ấy. Mình tiếc cho sự mập mờ giữa Punpun và cô họa sĩ Nanjou, đó có phải là lựa chọn đúng?
Mình thương cho Shimizu khi sự thật về "mẹ" được tiết lộ, rõ ràng giữa Shimizu và Seki đã hình thành nên một mối quan hệ phụ thuộc. Nhóm giáo phái của Peagacus cũng đáng sợ.

Jesus, this volume gets even darker. Was Thomas Hardy reincarnated to write manga?
So, we learn why Seki is close to Shimizu despite resenting him. Punpun's writing partner drops him after their manga was rejected and later goes back to her ex-husband, the Pegasus cult is rolling on, and the aftermath of the Fukushima earthquake, stunami, and nuclear disaster is in the background of these personal disasters.
The Pegasus cult for some reason ends up handicapping Punpun's landlord, so Punpun might have to leave before he can find Aiko. Feeling more hopeless, he pretends to be his playboy athlete neighbor, but while taking a driving test (and studying for his realtor exam), he finally meets Aiko. Shit gets bad. Really bad! Lust, lies, and then you find out what's been going on in Aiko's life and you realize that her marrying/running away with Punpun might be a good plan.
Jesus, so fucking dark. Inio Asano keeps the art complex and beautiful. The detailed backgrounds and subtle facial expressions are a joy to look at, and the surreal images of gods and during breakdowns are still beautiful. Also, Inio Asano is pretty great are drawing sex scenes by using tight clise-ups that turn into abstract images and negative white space. All the sex scenes are disturbing because of context and his artistic choices.

this is where it gets really hard for me to read. I utterly dislike punpun yet I relate to him so much. the amount of metamorphosis, personalities, and breakdowns he goes through in this volume hit way too close to home.
but the whole pegasus cult is still a big dislike for me in the whole series.
anyway, this is dark but it's going to get so much darker. I know what's going to happen yet I dread it so much

I’m over this volume. I couldn’t decide if I should rate it a zero or rate it a 5 over how much anxiety and stress this put me through 😫 this volume in itself makes me want to die . I said once before to a friend that I’d defend punpun with my life but I think tf not. I still love him though .. I think

In the words of RuPaul Charles "If you can't love yourself, how the hell you gunna love somebody else?"
That pretty much sums up this whole volume.
All of Punpun's hopes and dreams have come true and he is still his same old dour self. In this volume I found myself getting fed up with Punpun. In the previous volumes I could at least see why he was so unhappy with everything but now that things are going right, its upsetting that Punpun still can't appreciate the good things. I understand, depression is a bear, it really is. This is just such a perfect and intimate example of the life of someone with depression it'd hard to not be fully invested, the good, the bad and the ugly.

in this fifth volume of goodnight punpun, our main character remembers the deal he’d made with himself two years ago: if, by the time his lease was up, his life was the same, he’d commit suicide. well, it’s time to decide whether to renew his lease, and he’s still in the same place he was two years ago, especially as it pertains to aiko. however, when he and aiko finally reunite, he starts to realize he might have something to live for, after all.
i think this volume was, for me at least, a turning point in this series. up to this point, i’ve understood punpun’s struggles and felt bad for him. now, though, he’s only two years younger than me and making absolutely no effort to be a better person. yes, some of this can be chalked up to his previous traumas, but not all of it. there’s still two more volumes, plenty of time for this to change, but i’m not sure it will.
this manga also began to focus on the other characters, including the cult, much more. i’m curious as to how this will all be tied together in the subsequent volumes. despite my frustrations with punpun, i’m invested in this story.

This is another dark volume, like how can noone be a decent person and stay unhurt... damn. That said, it's an interesting story in it's way.

When the series focuses on the two leads, it's fantastic. Dark, twisted, fucked up, sad. All of it is great. But when Pegasus whatever the fuck going on that takes up countless pages is so fucking bad. Like beyond awful. To the point I wanna skip these sections. What a terrible narrative choice.

Some pivotal moments were presented in this book. I really liked reading about Seki and Shimizu, both their past and how it influences their current relationship. Still have questions about Toshiki (a.k.a. Pegasus) and his following.
We got to see more of Punpun growing up, and I really identified with his in-between state, not fitting in with coworkers and putting on an appearance of someone else. However, some things that he did and said I really didn't like and lost respect for.
I think he can become a better person, but for now there are some things that I don't like.

Ya no puedo más. Esta obra es una genialidad, pero te destruye. Y, sin embargo, tienes la certeza de estar ante algo tan auténtico y vivo que no puedes dejar de leer, aunque página tras página te consuma. Este volumen ha sido hasta el momento el que más me ha conmovido y repugnado a la vez. Punpun se ha convertido en un personaje despreciable, ya no solo triste. Por eso mismo, es tan humano como cualquiera de nosotros.
