This was mix of Wolverine stories, some decent, some better and one I really liked. It's well worth the read for Wolverine fans and I could almost give it another star for the nostalgia of taking me back to a time when comics were starting to be a little more sophisticated and I thought it was awesome for doing so.

An excellent anthology packed with compelling stories from Logan’s past. The artwork consistently complements the tone, and the sheer amount of content—from WWI and WWII to the Cold War, Team X, Weapon X missions, Department H, and more—is impressive. While it doesn’t include his origin or the classic Weapon X storyline, it delivers plenty of lesser-known tales set before his time with the X-Men.

A few stories, like the Cable/Wolverine one, lean into cliché and feel like generic action flicks, but overall, this is a strong, enjoyable collection.

This is a collection of different stories set before Wolverine's debut in the pages of the Incredible Hulk. As such there are different writers over decades, and some inconsistencies. The stories are ordered chronologically, and I'll go through them in order, give my thoughts, and point out some contradictions.

Wolverine in the Wild Frontier writer Timothy Truman, Penciler Todd Foxx, Inker: Gary Kwapisz

Set in Fur Trading days, Logan works for the Hudsons Bay Company, saves some Blackfoot from Americans befriends them falls in love with a woman named She Watches the Sparrow Hawk (who present day Wolvie remembering this keeps thinking is his later Blackfoot lover Silver Hawk which seems racist.) But the whole story is your average mighty whitey story and Sparrow Hawk dies. The art is pretty for the most part though. NEXT.

Wolverine the Amazing Immortal Man: writer: David Lapham. Art: Johnny Timmons

Wolvie is in the circus using his healimg factor as a trick, some cromes are comitted he's blamed. NEXT

Prisoner Number Zero witer Mark Millar art Kane Andrews. Wolvie is in a Nazi concentration camp. He keeps getting killed, and keeps coming back freaking out the commandant, then he kills the commandant. Apparently this concentration camp ends up being the worst at genocide. Nice atmospheric art, the plot is weird, totally Mark Millar... Not sure how good an idea it is to use the holocaust like this.

Last Man Standing writer Vince Hernandez, Artist Luke Ross

Logan is behind enemy lines with a unit in Nazi Germany... They don't really trust him then he helps them take out a panzer column and they drink together. This story is decent an very nicely drawn... The book is getting better.

Last Ride of the Devil's Brigade: Writer Rick Spears, Art: Timothy Green

Logan goes after a Nazi super soldier progam. Nazi werewolves. But at the last moment Nick Fury stops him from killing the scientist as Cap is dead and they need the Nazi guy for the Weapon + program gor the upcoming war woth the USSR. Art is weird but nice, not bad.

Path of the Warlord: Writer: Howard Mackie, Penciler: John Paul Leon, Inker: Shawn Martinbrough

Logan is trying to find inner peace through Japanese swordsmanship in Kyoto but he has to fight an interdimensional bad guy. Decent story, okay art, slightly orientalizing. Next.

Wolverine Agent of Atlas. Writer: Jeff Parker Art: Benton Jew

Logan takes on mind controlimg bugs with some other agents. It's okay.

Logan: Shadow Society. Plot: Howard Mackie, Script: Mark Jason Art: Tomm Vocker, Keith Aoken & Octavio Cariello

The first story in the book to really grab me, Logan, and Carol Danvers, before she got her powers, find out about a conspiracy to weaponize mutants, hounded by the Canadian government they run into Sabertooth who tells them that multiple factions are building mutant armies and he's chosen his side. Creed also makes Ligan come to terms with being a mutant himself. At the end Logan has left Camadian intelligence, but Carol hasn't given up. By the way the story says Logan and Carol have known each other for a while.

The First X-Men: writers: Neal Adams &Christos Cage, Art: Neal Adams

Logan discovers a plot to capture, study, and weaponize mutants! Again! He recruits Sabertooth (who apparently hasn't already chosen his team), to help him rescue, recruit, and train mutants to fight back. Along the way inspiring Profesdor X and Magneto. And finally the death of a young woman named Holo sets up Sabertooths eternal hatred of Wolverine. This story is fun, and I like Wolvies team, but it makes Wolvie out to be the most important X-Man ever, and the previous one is just better in my opinion.

Hunger: Writer: Karl Bollers Art: Stephen Segovia

A few wordless pages of feral Logam after he escaped Weapon X fighting wolves and being chased off by a family. It's okay, but really if you wanted to do an extended wordless Wolvie sequence, shoulda called Larry Hama.

A Whiff of Sartre's Madeline! Writer: Larry Hama Pencils: Cary Nord Inks: Scott Hanna

Shortly after rehabilitating himself from his Feral state with the Hudsons Wolverine flies off with a pre-Thing Ben Grimm to DC to try and learn about his adamantium skeleton. But Hydra tries to capture him, and Sabertooth tries to kill him. Nick Fury, and Carol Danvers show up to help out, and Black Widow also appears to keep Logan out of Hydra hands. While Logan is amnesiac, Furybsays he dosen't know Carol, but one line of hers could be taken to mean she's only acting in not claiming to know Logan. I bought this book for thre Larry Hama content, his work almost always delights me, sure does here.

Before the Fantastic 4 Ben Grimm and Logan. Writer: Larry Hama, Penciler Kaare Andrews, Inks: Walden Long

Logan, Ben Grimm, and Carol Danvers go on a spy mission to Russia. More Carol, More Larry, delightful 'nuff said.

Wolverine and Cable: Guts 'n' Glory. Writer Joe Casey, Pencils: Stephen Platt, and seven inkers... I am sleepy so I won't list them, sorry inkers.

Cable first arrives in modern day, makes a veteran friend. Wolvie fights a future baddy, then they both fight the future baddy. Pretty decent story.

Inconsistent.

The first story was a throwback to when Logan fought a serpent monster with some native americans. It was cool! Had some neat history to it.

Overall, there was a smattering of decent stories. The only one I loved was the holocaust one by Mark Millar. There was a pretty large stretch of stories that legit sucked.

I only recommend this to people who are dying for more Wolverine, want to complete their head canon, and don’t care if it’s great or not. I don’t particularly recommend the collection.

An alright release, some of the art work i did not like but i guess it's just because they're old, nothin to do about that. There is one problem with the stories tho, in some of these stories Logan doesn't have his claws, which follows the storyline where Logan didn't have his claws before the Weapon X program and yet in some of these stories he has claws. So that was confusing at times. I do recommend reading this collection tho.

Lots of Wolverine classics here and ends with one of the best team ups, Wolverine and Cable!

A lot of these stories are pre X-Men. Just a Canadian up in the wilderness and helping those helpless or people in need.

Candidly? I was a bit disappointed. I would simply say that the book was great but some of the stories individually (and some of the artwork), were not to my taste

This was a fun romp through some of the less dark parts of Logan's past. Every relationship was equally different and interesting. I also enjoyed the explanation for aspects of his character design.

Update: I've officially determined that First X-Men is not canon. So, I took off a star from my rating.

I'm reading this book out of order. from what i've read, this collection is quite good. a lot of stuff from the X-men universe shows up and characters. In X-Men Reading order, Wolverine: Prehistory takes place before X-Men Epic collection Vol 1.

Update 1: I've read through Logan Shadow Society to Wolverine and Cable. I wish First X-Men 1-5 were better.

Update 2: I'm still 4 comics away from finishing this book. Imma give this 5 stars. From what I read so far, this book is not perfect, but it's not disappointing enough for me to give it 4 stars. I'll update my review rating once I finish read the book, if necessary.

Wild Frontier story is a highlight, great story and native american setting. Rest is either just ok or not great. The modern stories I just skipped entirely because they look trash.

I loved the different stories about Logan. They gave me an insight to who he was before he joined the X-men.
