That’s how travel journalist Krista feels when she arrives in magical Quebec to report on Canada's glittering Winter Carnival.
Over ten sub-zero days Krista's formerly frozen heart begins to melt as she discovers an enchanting world of ice palaces, husky dog-sledding and maple-syrup treats galore. And then she meets Jacques, a man as handsome and rugged as he is mysterious…
The two share a secret that could bond them forever, but can they find a way to break through the protective layers around their hearts to warm up this winter wonderland?
Belinda Jones was born in Turnbridge Wells, Kent England. At the age of 19 she moved to London, where she resided for the next ten years before moving to California. She now lives in Los Angeles.
Belinda Jones writes books for women which focus around travel and womens issues, particularly relationships. Her books tend to fall into the romance, chick lit and women's fiction categories
This was my first novel by Belinda Jones and if you're interested in a travelogue of Quebec City and Montreal, then it's a great read. She's definitely convinced me that Quebec during the winter festival is the place to be.
However, as a romance it was a bit of let down. I found the main character not very likable and her antics were not only unrealistic, but jarring at times. I enjoy a bit of silliness, but this was a bit OTT.
Jammer !
I was very excited about reading Belinda’s new book! Firstly, I just have to say that the cover is BEAUTIFUL! I spent ages staring at it and even my fiancé who doesn’t comment much on the books I read said “That one’s colourful!” which between you and me, we should take as a seal of approval! I was also very much looking forward to reading this because I absolutely LOVE Christmas books!
In Winter Wonderland, Krista, a travel journalist, goes to Quebec to report on the Winter Carnival and what it has to offer, including spending time in the famous and enchanting ice hotel. Krista is soon taken in by the atmosphere, leading to many adventures, and meeting Jacques, a mysterious yet handsome man…
What can I say? Winter Wonderland was a wonderful read! From the first page I was drawn into Belinda’s world and taken on a journey full of sparkle, adventure and fun! I was enjoying the book so much that I never wanted to put it down! It got to the point where I was carrying it in my handbag with me, so I could retrieve it at every moment possible to read a few more glorious pages!
The characters are very well-written. Krista was instantly likeable, I warmed to her straight away. I loved her personality and I enjoyed reading about her adventures and experiences. Jacques was brilliantly written! As soon as he entered he had an air of mystery around him, and I was hooked! I instantly wanted to know more about Jacques, and I admit he was the reason I was staying up late at night rushing through the chapters! The romance in the book was splendid, I had a warm feeling in my heart when reading Winter Wonderland and even after I had finished the story!
Belinda has done a fantastic job with the descriptions in the book. The setting of Quebec was fascinating and I’m sure that I’m sure I’m not the only one, who having finished the book, added it to my list of places to visit! Throughout the book I felt as though I was transported right into the middle of the scenes, the story really came to life and I think it shows how talented Belinda Jones is.
Winter Wonderland is a perfect book for the Christmas season – Put on a jumper, curl up on the sofa with some chocolate and enjoy escaping into this beautiful story! A truly captivating read!
Belinda Jones beschreibt das winterliche Québéc wirklich traumhaft! Fands für einen ChickLit wirklich gut, nur die Auflösung am Ende ein bisschen holprig. Besonders die plötzliche Paarung von fand ich übertrieben.
Belinda Jones is a Chick Lit stalwart. Winter Wonderland is her 11th novel and there’s only a couple of her books I haven’t read, and none I haven’t enjoyed. I do, personally, feel like her last couple of books have been a bit below par – Living La Vida Loca had no romance to speak of, sadly and I found California Dreamers to be a novel I couldn’t engage with properly. I just felt there was something missing and that’s an awful feeling when it’s an author you normally really love. So I was wary when I received my copy of Winter Wonderland. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be a novel I enjoyed, I was worried I’d find it wanting. But I couldn’t not read it. It’s Belinda Jones, people. Plus it’s utterly stunning looking, with a pale blue/green background color and a winter wonderland shown inside a bauble. Stunning.
Winter Wonderland surprised me. It took me about 100 pages to get into it (which when compared to how short it is – 300 pages) is probably quite a while, but once I got into it, I got into it. It worked for me and I found myself fully absorbed in Krista’s adventures in the Winter Wonderland that is Quebec. I’m not a big traveller – I can count the countries I’ve been to on one hand and still have fingers left (Florida, Spain, England). I do, however, have dreams of travelling. I want to go to New York, to Australia, to Hawaii, but I’ve never thought as Canada as a place I’d like to visit. Why would I, when America is right there? That’s very ignorant me, I’m sure, but it just never really appealed. Let me tell you right here, right now, though, that I would LOVE to go to Canada. Love to visit Quebec’s Winter Carnival, love to see Montreal and all it has to offer. Belinda Jones can sell destinations like no one I know. And I’m sure that everyone who reads Winter Wonderland will also want to visit Canada. Canada rocks, it seems, and we’ve all clearly been missing out.
That’s what I’ve always loved about Belinda’s books, is the travelling. She’s the most accomplished travel writer, ever. But what of the actual story, which sadly isn’t just about how fabulous Canada is! Our main character is Krista, who after a painful split that’s she’s still suffering from, is hoping for a bit of a break from all that stuff and arrives in Canada raring to go. Even risking freezing to death, if it means the readers of her website Va-Va-Vacation! can have a stressfree a holiday as possible. What she doesn’t bank on, is a photographer jumping her her first night there, in an ice bed no less. She finds herself even more confused when she meets the mysterious Jacques and finds herself strangely attracted to him and his beautiful husky dogs. I liked the plot of the novel very much. I liked Krista and I liked the burdgeoning friendship with Jacques. Mostly, though, I just enjoyed the Carnival and I liked seeing it from Krista’s perspective. She gets herself in lots of scrapes, especially with the strange and enticing Mal.
I thoroughly recommend Winter Wonderland. It’s my favourite of Belinda’s last three novels, of that there’s no doubt. I was captivated by Canada, by Quebec, by the Carnival. I want to go to Canada and meet all the lovely Canadian people. I’d quite like to find my own Jacques, as well, to be fair. I would have liked to have found out exactly who the strange Mal was. He spent a lot of time terrorising Krista, and I sort of liked waiting for him to pop up again, and I would have just liked to know, out of curiosity, exactly who he was. I thought Annique, Krista’s tour guide was awesome and it makes such a change that although Annique was utterly beautiful and miles skinnier than Krista, that that storyline didn’t go down that path, and that actually Annique was lovely and she and Krista got on so well. I can’t wait for Belinda’s next book especially as The Travelling Tea Shop is going to be featuring Laurie as the main character – Krista’s best friend! So I’m hoping for an update on Krista’s life or even better, for Krista to be in it! Winter Wonderland is definitely a book you want to be curling up with because Belinda is back on track, folks, and it’s wonderful.
Originally reviewed on www.serendipityreviews.co.uk. You honestly can’t fault this author for her magical descriptions. The way she writes about Quebec’s Winter Carnival, you would think you were entering Disney World on Ice. Seriously it sounds stunning and I only wish it could be that magical in real life. Not that I would know personally, but I have read it isn’t as stunning, which is a real shame. Perhaps Belinda Jones should be in charge of planning and development for their next event.
Straight away, you find yourself sitting in a room made of ice with Krista and you can almost feel the chill yourself. You find yourself reaching for your hot water bottle and hoping you have seen the last of the snow.
As I mentioned earlier, the descriptions are just stunning. The author knows how to bring a place alive and you are given a detailed analysis of what the city is like. You can tell the author knows her stuff. Her characters are quirky, enigmatic and extremely entertaining. Many a page, I was caught by a fit of giggles. Krista, the main character is slightly annoying in her need to sort out everyone’s problems. Normally that wouldn’t bother me but she had known these people barely a week. I would have told her to keep her nose out personally.
I learnt so much about Cirque De Soleil. I hadn’t realised that they had originated from Quebec. The information provided about the company was truly fascinating, especially the charity work they have fulfilled so far.
Where the descriptions and characters are brilliant, unfortunately the plot lets the story down. The second half of the book fell flat for me and didn’t really have anything of interest going on it. I actually struggled to finish it. Relationships were easily mended, no real conflict to entice you in and the main character had fallen in love within in days. Everything appeared rushed and tied up far too nicely by the end and I felt unsatisfied with how things had progressed. I honestly feel the author got so wrapped up in the detail of the setting, she lost sight of what was actually happening to the characters.
Such a promising start, ruined by a disappointing end.
This was so fabulous!! I loved every second of it!
It's got a Travelogue feel to it and that's one of the pluses for me. Krista runs a travel itinerary website and visits the destinations so she can deliver a first class low-down for the prospective vacationers. She's been unlucky in love and is mending a broken heart so she wouldn't say no to the chance of a holiday romance to cheer her spirits, if it presents itself. On this trip she is visiting Quebec and throughout the book we get to go with her and see first hand all the 'must see/do' things that Quebec has to offer. We also get to tag along on her romantic endeavours and misadventures and it's all just so wonderful.
I wasn't sure of the location accuracies while I was reading, but since finishing and Googling everything that was in the book I've found out that it's a all exactly as she tells it - The places, the food, the customs, the activities - it's all there! Bonhomme and the annual carnival sound like so much fun and the restaurants Krista visited sound so yummy. The people sound wonderful, the weather seems inviting and just everything about the book/place drew me in.
The story/romance side of the book was done to perfection too and had all the usual setbacks, misunderstandings and obstacles that comes with good chick-lit. It was funny, it was touching, it had a bit of mystery and it had just the right mix of will they/won't they to keep it interesting.
I just loved it all! It's a keeper and a favourite and I really wish there was a website called Va-Va-Vacation! to see all the wonderful photo's and reportage from Krista's trip! I spent a good couple of hours after finishing the book going over all the travel websites I could find, trying to find the best deal on a package trip to Quebec for next year. Seriously, as soon as I find the best deal I'm booking up!!! :D
What I liked about Winter Wonderland was that the main character interracts with so many different kinds of people, yet everyone seems to be connected to someone in some type of way. I really liked the fact that there’s a character in Winter Wonderland who just loves to cause mischief, and involves Krista into everything somehow. Winter Wonderland was a kind of cheery story, but there were some definite downer parts to the story as well. I’m glad that the ending to Winter Wonderland was a happy one!
What I didn’t like about Winter Wonderland was that by the end of the novel, we didn’t really see more between Krista and her new beau. Which, by the way, Winter Wonderland overall is totally a fluff story. Winter Wonderland is more suited towards someone who wants a light-hearted, fast-paced, Adult Christmastime story.
In the beginning, Winter Wonderland was hard to get into. I found myself skipping paragraphs ahead of where I actually was in the book. I ended up re-reading quite a bit of this book because of that!
I gave Winter Wonderland, 2 of 5 stars on GoodReads.
Have you read any wintery novels this season? I’d love some more recommendations!

I was really excited to read this. Last year I ordered the hard copy of this book and they couldn't deliver to me because it was sold out. So, my spoiled brat ass was mad and this year the kindle version was only available so I ordered it even though I prefer hard copy. I think I was so excited for this book that I hyped it up in my mind. I didn't connect with Krista or Jacques. However, loved her love of dogs and her hating on Michael Vick. I also loved the tourist info for Canada because I have never been and always wanted to go so I got some good info for my future trip.
It was only when I'd finished reading it that I read who it was by, the eagerness to read a wintery book as soon as it was downloaded onto my kindle kind of took over me! I wasn't surprised when it clicked, as I love Belinda's other books (hence pre-ordering this one).
I was really intrigued as to where the characters were going, and how the story was going to involved them!
I've fallen in love with Quebec, and want to go so I can experience some of the magic that was conveyed in the story!
After the many novels set in a warmer climate, it was a wonderful change to have this novel set in snowy Canada. As always, I loved the descriptions, the well-researched information provided on the location, and I definitely felt like I wanted to go hug a few huskies once I was finished with the book.
There isn't much else to say really. I love the recipe! Travel information, fantastic landscapes, interesting characters, love interests (some with a twist) and a crazy snowman.

Imagine waking up in a snow globe... That's how travel journalist Krista feels when she arrives in magical Quebec to report on Canada's glittering Winter Carnival.

Straight away I have to say what an absolutely freaking amazing fantastic read! When I got sent a copy I just couldn't wait to snuggle up and read this, Iv loved all of Belinda Jones' books, best book I loved was "Out of the blue", I just loved that the book was set in Greece, However this book just topped it completely! Another Christmas book out this year, definitely to get you in the festive, okay maybe it doesn't have the chesnuts roasting in the fire and christmas tree decorated and all that but It still gets you in the wintry cold feeling and makes you wanna snuggle up reading this.
Belinda had obviously put plenty of research in to this book and I wasn't disappointed, the writing just flowed so easily and I was instantly hooked and I even felt I was in the book myself. I loved all the characters Krista,Laurie,Giles,Annique,Sebastian,Jacques, i thought they all connected together nicely. I loved the friendship between Krista and Laurie, their friendship reminded me of me and my best friend Kaylie. The lovely Krista has a deep secret but when she meets Jacques he also has a deep secret too and when they both grow close they find they both have the same sort of secret and It was sweet when we did find out her secret in the book, it makes you warm up to her a lot more. I loved the ending of the story I alot, I am a hopeless romantic so it was beautiful hehe! I also loved the chemistry between Krista and the oh so sexy and wonderful Jacques....Oooohhh swooon! The person who fitted the lovely description of Jacques was indeed the wonderful Ian somerhalder..he would be my perfect Jacques anyday tehe ;)
I loved that Belinda chose Quebec and Montreal for the places in Winter Wonderland, It was certainly a fantastic choice! She made the story have wonderful pointers and facts about the places but make it into such a fantastic read that you wish to book yourself a flight right away! It's definitely a choice to put on my bucket list of places to go hehe! I want to enjoy a nice stay in a ice cold bed and try the wonderful poutine...Yummy!
One of my all time giggles with this book was the husky dog sledding...I will say nothing more hehe! I just really enjoyed this book so much, the chapters flowed so easy and with the mix of characters was still able to follow the story lots. Grab a copy of this book straight away hehe!
Thank you Lyndsey at Hodder & Stoughton for sending me a copy of Winter Wonderland.
Bonhomme ✽ Tristesse ✽ l'Amour ✽ Malhomme ✽ Cirque du Soleil ✽ Caribou in CANADA
You can feel the chill factor from the pages, as Krista finds herself in Quebec, and briefly in Montréal, her mission to bring the Winter Carnival to life on her own travel website Va-Va-Vacation. From the etiquette of the do,s and don'ts in an Ice Hotel (do not wear any cotton because if you sweat it freezes, not good), to sledding with huskies in ice cold temperatures, to ski joring... (what's that? it involves horses and skiers, that's what) a real Winter Wonderland is brought to life in this terrific book!
A great style that bowls along at a cracking pace and some really interesting snippets of info. Would you ever had known that the Inuit made their sleds out of two lengths of frozen salmon wrapped in animal hide? Have you seen the Balto statue of a husky in Central Park as a tribute to his help in a diptheria outbreak (I know, not exactly relevant for Quebec per se - but I bet you will keep your eyes open for it when you are next in the Park!); The Pink Panther was filmed in Cortina...It takes 32 litres of maple sap to make one litre of maple syrup...The Queen Elizabeth Hotel, Room 1724 is where Yoko Ono and John Lennon recorded "Give Peace a Chance".... the longest Cree chief's name is Ahchuchhwahauhhatohapit (that would be great for a spelling bee!)....
So, as you can see "Every City has its Story". And at the end of this tale, you have Krista's Do's and Don'ts, the essential message when planning a trip is "more research = less regret".
Enjoyed this book very much. Many people have commented on the fact this is a bit of a travelogue novel and I actually really liked this about the book. The book is set around Quebec and Montreal and though it is almost twenty years since I visited these places the book brought these cities 'back to life' for me along with many fond memories of travelling in Canada (one of my favourite places in the world).
OK, there isn't a huge amount of 'romance' in the book but it is, I thought, a beautifully romantic and inspiring book. The lead characters Krista and Jacques are very likeable as, in fact, are all of the 'supporting' characters.
There were a couple of minor aspects of the plot I would have liked more 'resolution' on in the end but to say anymore might give too much away re the story and plot!
A great book and I'm looking forward to meeting Krista's friend Laurie in her own book next year when she tours New England (another one of my favourite places) in The Travelling Tea Shop.
Can't believe I succumbed to a romance, chick lit kind of book,... but I did. On a particularly down day in December, this popped up on a respected, Goodreader's TBR list and she does about as wide a genre as I do. Plus that week it was a cheap price on the Kindle... and I caved. And you know what? It was truly ok. Decent writing. A quick, easy to read. Not so plausible, but I allowed myself to imagine. Lots of interesting historical, cultural and travelogue tidbits thrown in. Stock characters, but once in a while, even an old girl needs a little of the fantasy... Permission granted.
I dunno... it wasn’t great. I read the whole thing because I don’t like DNFing. But there’s so many questions. It all seemed a little too unbelievable even for the nature of the story, how Krista seemed to get all the very best Quebec experiences falling in her lap. And the Malhomme stuff? Essentially added nothing to the story and wasn’t tied up in a satisfying way for me.
To be fair, the details about Quebec and Montreal were interesting if you’re into travel and history. Enough to make someone want to get on a plane and experience it.
This book was a filler between more exciting reads for me. It filled a gap, but I won’t be telling others about it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
DNF at 45% Well, this book started very well, a lot of ice, snow and winter and a sweet kiss from a stranger. But then it was just all about Canada and the huskies and taking pictures (of Krista) in every possible location. I'm sorry to says this, but it was kind of boring. I stopped reading but I still would like to give this book 3 stars because of the atmosphere and the beautiful cover. I was expecting a festive romantic comedy, but after 136 paiges I didn't want to wait for the love story anymore. Sorry.
This was very forgettable. It was a cute little story, but it didn't stick out. Also, the main character was super weird to me! She acknowledges at some points that she oversteps, but for me, that was hugely annoying. She meets a man one time, tracks him down, and inserts herself all over the place. She's a creep. Also, she thinks her new pal is sooo amazing but can't tell find the time to tell her she kissed up on her man? She's going to let that be? She sucks, the end.
It took me travel to Quebec while I was in my reading nook. I even googled some of the interesting places in the novel to learn more about it. I did really enjoy the settings but for the characters and their conflicts,I think they were too slow in the development. For me the excitement to the story was only started three quarter of the novel. But still, overall it was a good story.
Lovely romantic comedy that has made me want to visit Quebec. A very wintery story with a captivating story. A very enjoyable read for anyone who loves the rom-com genre.
Completely agree with my last review - think I will be rereading this every year to get me in the wintery mood.
BORING AF. Not sure if it's because I read a Christmas book in May or because the story was so boring and I did not get kilig at all. #honestyhour #judgeme
I was looking for an easy read on the back of two grisly and fast-paced crime/thrillers and on that front, this one certainly delivered. I liked the premise of the travel writer setting, with Krista travelling from London to Quebec City in Canada to experience the Christmas season in particular the Winter Carnival. This was what I was most excited about from the blurb when I chose this one off my shelf to read next and on this front it certainly delivered. I had no idea that there were ice hotels in that part of Canada (like they do in Iceland and the Nordic countries) and “meeting” dog-sledding huskies was pretty fun.
That aside though, this wasn’t particularly memorable (and that’s not because of the genre, I do like my chick-lit and they can blow me away!), and even though I finished the book today I’m already struggling to remember the names of some of the characters. This wasn’t helped by the plot – I thought there was far too much happening for a 300 pager – it felt to me like a series of this happened, and then that happened, and than that that happened etc. with little expression of the emotional side of things. My favourite storyline was , but I suspect that anyone else who also had a favourite storyline would have come off disappointed. And the thing is, I didn’t think quite that many things , a story narrated by a travel writer could have done much better with fewer storylines and focusing more on the setting.
The typical 3 star book for me: I enjoyed it while I was reading but there wasn’t anything that would make it stand out. Looking on Goodreads after finishing the book, I see that this is part of a series that covers a different location each time. I did like the concept so if I happened to come across another book in the series I’d be tempted to give it a go, but not one that I’d be actively looking to buy or wishlisting.
A fun filled read set in Quebec City and Montreal in the winter. I've been on vacation to both places in the summer and could visualize the sites, the food and restaurants, the drives, the waterfront and the cities and in this case the cold.
Krista is traveling to Quebec City during the Winter Carnival to report on it for her online travel planner site, Va-Va-Vacation! that she runs with her friends, Laurie and Danielle, out of England. Krista is the one that does most of the traveling and loves it. She has a photographer and a guide while in Quebec City and meets some locals too. There are quite a few characters all who have a depth to them. I loved Jacques and his dogs as well as his brother who has his own stories to tell and some of it gets told in a side trip to Montreal. There's a lot of stories going on at once along with some romance and some malevolence too, thanks to a prankster.
The story had jumps and starts and didn't always flow as smoothly as I thought. There were some loose ends and the story ended abruptly for me since there wasn't the closure I look for. There were a couple of romances in the offing.
Ms. Jones is a new to me author. I look forward to reading more of her travel stories since some are in locations I've traveled to before.
It was such an odd, but charming crossover between a realistic guidebook to Quebec during the Winter Carnival and a fluffy, fairy tale-ish, winter-themed, romantic novel.
The plot and characters could use some additional work. Still, the main reason why I'm giving the book only three stars is because of the low-key irritating main character - a busybody called Krista, at times naive and immature and very prone to jumping to conclusions. A "why not barge into private lives of people you've just met and meddle happily with no reliable background information whatsoever? Let's save them all!" kind of woman. Obviously, the first person narrative did not help in this regard. Well, at least she sounds very human.
