One of all time favorite books when I was a little kid. I used to take it with me everywhere.
The Barbapapas (don't you just love saying that word?) are candy colored blobs that can shape-shift. In this book, their house was torn down so they built their own by pouring cement over themselves and creating a tiered, white, bubble-shaped house--think of lots of little pods--that I thought was the coolest. There was also a house in my town that kindof looked like it, so I would always yell out, "There's the Barbapapa house!" when we went by. I think it must have driven my mother nuts.
I wish these books were back in print. It's one of my three year old's favorites and we read it every night. Basically, the Barbapapas house gets too small, so they find a fixer-upper and make it beautiful, but their neighborhood gets developed and they get kicked out to live in an apartment. They hate apartment life, so they move to the country and make their signature barbapapa houses using barbaplastic. But, trouble comes again. . . !

This was one of my favourite books as a very young child! I didn't even know what it was called because I didn't know French at the time. (My version was in French) I don't even know of there is an English version. I just discovered now at 37 years old that the film company Topcraft, who crafted one of my favourite films as a child, The Last Unicorn, helped to create the first film in a series that this book is based off of. It's a shame that this was never reprinted! It was such a great book that I still remember how much I loved it & would make up the story on each page because I couldn't read the French at the time. I didn't start learning French until Grade 3.
I randomly just remembered this strange book from my childhood, where a family of blob-like people build a house. They are able to shape-shift and so use this to expand themselves and create the shape of the house out of something - concrete? mud or clay? I don't know. As a child I remember being fascinated by this, although more so because of how each child got their own individual room. As an adult it's a bit disturbing.
This book is about the Barba family searching for a new home. They move several times until they find the right one. The pictures are very interesting but I think young kids will enjoy them. This would be a fun book to read for discussing different types of houses and living areas.
This book was cute but I don't see my self using it as a teacher. It addresses moving, growing families and different places people live. I dont find the vocab that difficult or varied, or the puncuation and their doesn't seem to be much of a lesson or moral.
This book is about a creature and his family going from house to house, but finally building their own and protecting it from moachines (bulldozers etc)
