Every year, people are arrested for their participation in radical social struggle. As much as we like to believe it couldn’t happen to us, it could. And it’s best to be prepared. This book it is a guide wrote by the veteran legal support activists of the Tilted Scales Collective, that present an overview of how to balance your personal, political, and legal goals in a criminal trial.
It is a great resource. I specifically liked the questions about mutual responsibility and honest assessments of what continued support is dependent on.
I saw this somewhere and snatched it up. What I was looking for was a breakdown of the criminal legal process that I could use to share with folks in Enough Is Enough, an anti-police brutality group I'm apart of in Rochester, NY. It partially delivered.
The book is definitely written from a radical left-wing / revolutionary position. The audience is activists and people in movements who might end up in legal trouble. It really excelled here and gave some great tactical and strategic points while filling in with anecdotes from radicals and revolutionaries.
Because of the position it took and the audience it focused on, it wasn't as useful as I'd hoped for. It did offer insight into the federal system and much of the process is replicated in New York State, at least in my experience watching courts for several years.
It's a wonderful book for activists to read. It gets you thinking more seriously about direct action, the necessity of security culture, and the potential consequences and pit falls if you find yourself in the clutches of the state.
It's very politicized.
Again, not a bad thing, just not exactly what i was looking for. It was accessible, straight forward, and not academic. I want to get their guide for lawyers when it comes out.
