This book focused so much on telling us the bigger picture that the smaller picture got brushed over completely. Okay, they were important things, so we were told about them. Done? Yes. But now, what about the relationship between Quin and Holland? What about Agatha and Dorian? What about the touched-upon-but-not-detailed matter of Garrick and Laine? What about so many other little things which I don't remember now?

Also, there was too much telling and too less showing. We were being TOLD of the romance between the MCs, but I could not SEE it with my reader's eyes. I could not connect with either of the characters or their voices. There was so much happening simultaneously that there wasn't any time to register them all properly and have them stay in mind. Just like the spoiler part of my review can tell you (if you've read the book), I couldn't even get the order of events right, adding to the list when something came to mind.

Next, there were numerous typos just strutting about, leaving me irked in their wake. It would have been great if the only compromise was the flow of the plot, or sometimes the plot itself, but not also proper editing.

All in all, this book of the series has been a great letdown for me. Yes, I understand that it is hard to maintain the same level of amazingness in each book throughout the entire series, and I have seen many series take on great new things they decide to add on and lose the integrity and fan base that they had accumulated until that point. I just hope that the author decides to maybe take some help from beta readers (and editors) to make the next book (which I am really looking forward to--she mentions the name of the book right before the book starts, and it isn't hard to guess who the MCs will be from the title) a much better one. I had greatly enjoyed the previous books of the series as we had detailed, easy-to-love characters that stayed with you a long time because of their clear voice. Fingers crossed for the next one.

First thoughts:
This book was entirely too long. I could not stay focused in it, and there was so much background-

I am happy with the ending and yes, I will read the next one. Let's hope it doesn't repeat the timeline again, I can't go through it a third time.

This book was good overall but WAY too long and the pregnancy only occurred in the last 10% of the story and felt rushed. After all the buildup and anticipation of having the pregnancy, it would have been great to have a scene focused on when the couple found out and for the pregnancy to be incorporated more throughout the story.

WOW. SO MUCH happened in this story I don't even know where to begin! I was one of those also begging for Holland's story after the third book, and it did not disappoint. He definitely deserved a HEA, and Quin was just perfect for him. I love that he loved Holland for HIM and wanted him despite society norms saying that Holland was ruined.

I also loved that the other couples were featured so much in this story. I loved getting to see more of Abel and Bax, who were my favorite couple up until now. We got to see everyone working together.

Also, I loved how much things advanced with the shifters in relation to humans and that we got to read more about how the shifters have to deal with the restrictions against them when they are in the human world. Between Holland's modeling, Bram and his school, and then getting the President involved in shifter policies, there was a lot that went on in hopefully making things better for the shifters.

And finally, we got to learn more about the True Omega - what it means and why these four have the skills they have. I think it's interesting with the books that Holland was translating, and I can't wait to read more about that.

I also can't wait to read more about some of these other couples and potential shifters who will be featured in their own book.

HIGHLY recommended, but definitely read this series in order as it builds on each other and does have a lot of overlap with characters.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Audio Review 25Dec2019: 4 Stars

So, all the things that I griped about below still stand, but going in knowing that I wasn't as enamored of this one as I wanted to be made me pay more attention to the little details that DID make it a better re-read (via audio). First, NJR always delivers a great performance and I loved his narration. 2) All of the attempts by the sympathetic humans to bring nation-wide attention to the plight of the werewolves was more poignant (yay for allies!). C) Holland was born to be an Alpha's mate and it was nice to see him acting like it; him always keeping to the shadows and only interacting marginally in the stories of other MCs is what made me so interested in his tale to begin with. 2²) The focus on "curing" Holland of his inability to conceive was less frustrating this time around since it helped set the stage for more Human/Shifter medical collaborations and while that could mean some pretty scary things for Shifters (think Mengele), I choose to see it as beneficial to both species. ⚄) That modeling angle is still ridiculous (and that designer with his exploitation of Shifter culture/esthetic is so very cringe), but stepping back I can see how it was meant to maybe be the first step to fame being the way to mainstream Shifters. vi) The President visiting is also still far-fetched, but I can appreciate how having him present at the wedding/mating was humanizing him and allowing him to see Shifters in a different light. He interacted with the pack, had questions and concerns, but his heart seemed to be in the right place and I liked that he followed through with the FEMA-ish money to help the packs and those discretionary funds to improve the education of the young shifters. ('Cause a funding bill or legislation at this point would never pass.)

All in all, a better experience this time around...even though it still felt like the love story between Quin and Holland took a back seat to all the other plot development.

Looking forward to Garrick's book now. It will be the first one I haven't read before I listen. Maybe that will be a good thing? IDK.

Original Rating 10Oct2017: 3.7 Stars

I was so excited for Holland's story...but this book was just too much of everything. Between the fire and the modeling and the surgery and everything that came after, it felt like the love story got lost.

Having just finished a book (Slow Heat) where the MCs were happy to forego birthing children due to complications, well, I kind of hoped that would be the route this book took as well; that with all the other messages of independence and ability issues for Omegas touted in this series, being a bearer wasn't a necessity for completion...as an individual or as a couple. Sure, the characters said it didn't matter, but in the end it sort of did since it went that direction after all, didn't it?

Also, I hate "discovered" model scenarios because it smacks of some mighty Mary Sue fantasy/wish fulfillment. Things may be different in this alternate universe but, incidentally, almost all of the modeling industry details were wrong. (Just sayin'.) Plus, OMG, really? Having the designer actually play up the "savage" angle? Seriously? WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK? That's like having all the white girls dressed in sweater sets while the POC models have to wear animal prints. Sheesh. So much wrong with that...

I'll still read the next one - because I can't wait to see how a shifter/human relationship goes over with the pack. Probably like a lead balloon...but it sure will be interesting! And I hope that these social issues have some legal resolutions, too.

Having read the previous books in the series, I was really looking forward to Holland's story in this one. Other reviews mention concerns, among them, the book being overly long. It made me hesitate to start, dreading the worst – but I was pleasantly surprised by how lovely the romance turned out! The first half of the book was 4 solid, happy stars. The second half (the overly long bit) lost direction regarding both story arc and relationship development. On occasion weirdly skipping ahead, bypassing parts of the story where anticipation had been built up across many chapters. And there were maaaany chapters; 91 of them in fact. One thing which do forgive the somewhat aimless meandering is how clearly the author love her characters, their daily goings on and the world she has created for them. Mercy Hills is such a pleasant imaginary world to spend your time in! But as a book, if the writing concept of 'kill your darlings' had been applied, it would have been half as long, giving it a much better pace and flow through the story. Still, Byrde has carved out a place in my readers heart, and I truly look forward to read her next book.

This story is very difficult to read if you haven't read the rest of the series and I only read Book 1 (Which I loved). I wanted to jump to Holland's story because I was curious after reading Sanctuary by this author. However there are too many character and not enough focus on the love story between Holland and Quin. I like the characters though so I will maybe give it another try in a few days.

Omega Strong!

Every book I read by this author exceeds my expectations. Initially Ann-Katrin asked me to read this as an ARC and I almost did, but luckily I decided to read the three previous series books first. So I purchased this book and took my time (it is a long book) and enjoyed each page of this compelling storyline of Omegas, the Alphas who love them, male pregnancy, and pups.

If you are thinking about just jumping into this series with Book 4, you will be very confused. There are so many characters from the other three books with similar names, back stories, plans, big goals for the Omegas, and as well as how Humans & Wolves interact.

There is a big desire to lessen the animosity between the two species. As well as make relations between the packs better, while showing that the Omegas were capable of being much more than "Bearers". And that if an Omega is incapable of producing " pups" they aren't useless or in pack terms "repudiated", in other words thrown away by their mate. Hopefully the Omega's home pack will allow him or her to return.

What I really loved about this book was how the author set out to demonstrate that a "person's " / Omega's self worth was not confined to his ability to bear pups. It could easily be analogous to a barren woman in a society where the woman's worth was in how many "Alpha" / male children she had and secondary how well she cared for her family. A girl child or " Omega" bearer's worth was what her bride price was for a fertile Omega. Even if fertile, an Omega's life still wasn't as valued as that of an Alpha or Beta. They are considered second class or even lower class denizens of their packs. Not worthy to be educated beyond the equivalent of taking Home Eonomics classes or how to be a "good" Omega. They weren't considered smart or talented enough to do anything more than care for someone else's pups and their household.

But Mercy Hills changed all of that. They elevated their Omegas - male & female to positions of revalence. Though some Alphas especially those raised in other packs or by older more traditional parents had to sometimes be reeducated in the Mercy Hills way of doing things. And a repudiated Omega was not someone to be looked upon with scorn. Or approached in a disrespectful manner, with lascivious expectations on the Alpha's part. Nor was he supposed to be hidden away. Too ashamed to be out in respectful company.

Holland's spunky, take no prisoners toughness got him through when his cousin's misery lead to a very sad suicide. His cousin buried his pain until it became too much. Luckily for Holland he got a chance afforded no other Repudiated Omega - to really prove who he could be - not just the babysitter & housekeeper for the Security Chief, his mate, and their several pups.

So much occurred in this book: new characters introduced and old characters brought back, pups born, a fire, a new career, new ways to help the pack earn much needed money for the many mouths to feed. It was sad, depressing, uplifting, humorous, compelling, with fascinating world building continued, the Wolves visiting places outside of the enclaves, special guests inside the enclaves, and traditional mating ceremonial activities. I am so eager for the next book.

It's almost 5 am, and I am glad I took a vacation day today. I could not stop reading! This is a long book, so settle in, get your drinks and snackies because you won't want to stop. I do think this is my favorite book in the series. I love the world building, seeing more of the history of the enclave and learning more about the True Omegas. And Holland. Finally Holland gets his HEA and that takes shape in many forms. Shifter novels, especially Mpreg are a hard enough sell. So many times I read a Mpreg book and think to myself "yeah right". Not once during this series have I ever felt that way. Ann didn't make Holland perfect - she made him real, with all the emotions he should have. Anger, sadness, an air of defeat. Then we eat to see him grow happier, confident and finally feeling worthy of his happiness. I love that his fertility issues were not magically solved. All in all, I think this is Ann's best series and I look forward to the next installment.

I did receive an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Then I bought it! You should too.

This is my favourite one so far

There's some absolutely wonderful world building in this book as the Mercy Hills Pack's alpha is claimed by a totally unsuitable omega.

I loved Holland, the things he'd been through and the pressure he put in himself were immense but Quin saw through it all to the beautiful and brilliant shifter underneath.

There's lots of background happenings in this book as the shifters start to question why they have to live behind walls, why they're shunned and feared and a dawning hope that things can be changed.

There's been an awful lot of work gone into creating the cultures and customs of the shifters and they remind me very much of the Native American tribes.

Really long, but really worth it. Seeing Holland develop from someone who doesn't think himself worth his cousin's help to alpha's mate is a treat. And in his growth, seeing Quin believe himself worthy of his role? Delightful. Delicious. A treat.

An enjoyable fourth installment to the Mercy Hills Pack series. Felt this one was a bit more of a slower build compared to the first three in the series. There was more focus on the shifter community and their relationship with humans this time around. I think this complimented the story.
The story opens with Omega Holland. He was previously mated but was dumped after it was discovered he couldn't have babies. He has feelings for pack Alpha Quinn but feels they can't be together if he can't provide a mate with a heir. In time Quinn convinces Holland that he wants to be with him regardless and Holland finally relents and they mate. Seeing Holland pining for the babies he thinks he can't have was heart breaking.
After a fire devastates another pack Holland and Quinn end up adopting an orphaned brother and sister. Aggy and Dorian are adorable and loved seeing Holland and Quinn being the dads they were meant to be to them.

It's discovered that Holland's infertility can be cured with an operation and he does get pregnant. I loved seeing Holland pregnant but personally would have liked to have seen more of the pregnancy.

Repudiated

Holland was repudiate by his alpha and sent away. Quinn the Alpha of Mercy Hills finds him most attractive. Together they begin to build a better pack. Love these books!

I really enjoy this series. But my goodness this book was ridiculously long. Like soooo long for no reason. I enjoyed their story. Sheesh all the background was crazy. So much to keep up with.

Alpha of Mercy Hills Quin meets Holland an omega who moves to Mercy Hills to help his Cousin with his pups. Holland doesn't think he deserves to be mated again and Quin doesn't think he deserves to be mated due to his history. Both are wrong and this is the telling of their story.

This story takes place over the course of almost two years. At this time they meet and then eventually start a relationship, avoiding becoming Mates. I don't want to give a lot of away, but this is a really good story about their relationship and how traditional roles can be challenged. A lot happens between them and between shifters and humans.

4.5-star rating, mostly for length. It was a little long and while I learned a lot, some didn't seem to really relate to the story (at least for me).

This needed more editing. There were a lot of mistakes, the kind that aren't easily picked up by spellcheck. Missing words, wrong words, characters appearing in a scene when we were just told the page before that they weren't there.

The Omega’s Alpha is the fourth book in the Mercy Hills Pack series and a significant installment for the overall-arcing saga. The first three books of the series need to be read beforehand to get the full enjoyment from this book. I skimmed a few other reviews, and a few people mention how long this book is and that a lot happened in it. For me, that was not a problem but a huge bonus, and something I enjoyed immensely, but I also like long, epic fantasy books like The Wheel of Time series. There are many other Omegaverse books that are short and sweet (nothing wrong with that), but I’m delighted that Ann-Katrin Byrde has given us epic-length books to add to the Omegaverse category.

Holland is an Omega who’s been beaten down emotionally his whole life. When he’s thrown out of his home for being barren, and left to live off the mercy of his family, Holland believes his life is over. But then his cousin Bax brings him to Mercy Hills where he gets a second chance at life and love, and finally comes into his own as a shifter and Omega. Quinn is an Alpha who’s been scarred by battles and war. When he finally comes home back to Mercy Hills, he’s ready to pick up as Alpha, but he can’t let his demons go. When Holland comes into his life, Quinn finally has a chance at happiness and love he never expected he’d get. Together, these two shifters are changing not only their lives, but are on the path together to change how shifters live within the United States.

I adored the characterization of Holland, Quinn, and all the other characters. They are all in depth, complex, and interesting characters with unique personalities. The feel real to me. The plot was intricate and complex, with many moving parts, but throughout it all, the love between Holland and Quinn was strong and true. Their romance was beautiful not only for the love and fluffy moments, but also how they support and cared for each other. These two are true partners and the leaders the shifters need in this time of change and discovery.

There were a few things that were odd to me when it came to the U.S. military culture (like saluting an enlisted soldier), but since this is an entirely different world, and only reflects the real world, I was able to let it go and realize the rules are different for the Mercy Hills Saga. What’s wonderful was that Ann-Katrin Byrde kept the rules consistent so they felt real and right. I love how much detail is put into the world-building and how consistent and regulated it’s all kept.

And you begin again, sometimes you lose,

sometimes you win, but you begin again. Even though your heart is breaking, in time the sun will shine and you will begin again. ~Barry Manilow~
This book was everything!!! I absolutely loved it! I read some of the comments of how long this book was and I thought they were crazy! It wasn't long enough I wanted so much more of Quin & Holland!!
Their relationship was beautiful, emotional and just heart breaking all at the same time. I felt so bad for Holland and his yearning to have babies of his own to take care of. I also completely understood his resentment towards Bram. There was so much going on with this book and it was fascinating! The fire in one of the packs enclave was so tragic! I went through so many emotions when they were dealing with that situation. I couldn't believe (and yet I could at the same time), but how naive and arrogant the humans were. Even to their own kind they acted like a bunch of morons. I just couldn't fathom being that bigoted of an individual! The two children that Holland and Quin adopted were so sweet and cute! I also completely enjoyed their mating ceremony and how they made it their own! Just going and breaking down certain tradition barriers. I know the author hasn't stated it in any of the stories yet, but my conclusion of the "True Omega" is that when Omegas are actually treated right and cared for properly they have special powers that show. So I think technically all of them have these powers in some sort of capacity. I know they talked about how there are strong and weak omegas as well as alphas, but if the other Alphas and packs put more value into omegas I think they would thrive as well. Not just this one pack even though Mercy Hills is obviously ahead of the game when it comes to just treatment of omegas in general. I'm interested to see how it all plays out with the new journal that was found from the omegas point of view and I do hope that the other packs pull their heads out of their bums and get with the times.

Better than the previous 2.

Holland is an interesting character and has a personality that I definitely like and relate to. His story was sad, but also had so much space to become great and it did, he ended up showing how great he can be... I am interested in how he will continue to affect the pact in his position and what he's doing for shifters in general.

Quin follows a good plan of alpha brothers just as strong and fierce. Totally liked him and how determined he was in what he decides to do for the pack, to improve himself and to give himself a chance at love. He did win Holland with that and his stubborn love. They had chemistry, their love was sweet and hot and their story to become a family was heart warming.

The book has quite some drama, not only for the romance but also for the background moving plot of shifters and omegas. I found those to be interesting but here's where the story line gets annoying. I had the same problem as before, I kept feeling the book was overstaying it's welcome. Hoping the next chapter was an Epilogue, it feels strongly as if it was 2 books crammed into one. There were subplots that worked with the background plot and kinda tied the main couple's story but it was so drawn out, made the book so unnecessary long that I was annoying. I just wanted the book to end even if I was enjoying a lot of it.

I think I appreciate Ann-Katrin's style of writing in general, I really like her characters and the world building she's doing but something needs to be done about the story lines and length of her books. They either get a better pace or get cut into 2... the desire to speed read them is sometimes too much and I prefer to read slowly, to enjoy each word, not down them like medicine.

Anyways. This one gets a solid 3 stars out of 5. Will continue to read and I'm actually very interested by Garrick and Laine's story. I wasn't before... btw but now I'm totally into it.

Heartbreak, overwhelming love and the struggle of a new future

Ann-Katrin Byrde has outdone every other book she has written! Yes this is a story about Quin and Holland but more than that it is a story of a "people" who want more for themselves and especially for their children to live in a world not of their making.

Quin has PTSD from his time with the marines and Holland is learning to accept being repudiated by his former alpha for being barren. Throughout this beautiful story, Quin and Holland become closer and want to only be with each other no matter what other pack members' expectations may be. They help each other to be themselves and become stronger through the struggles.

While a lot of the struggle is with themselves and the pack, the other major struggle is learning how to live with humans, and to teach and learn to set aside fear with humans.

For me this was a magnificent story because I am Japanese-American and it reminds me of my family who were in internment camp. The fear of "white" America, although we were born in the U.S., was real and the struggle to create a better life for our children was real. This story embodies the spirit that many people can identify with. Well done!

Solid.

Some things are a bit iffy like his pregnancy like hmmm ok yay for him but also what does that say about being barren like couldn’t they have had a happy ending without that changing,,, that’s something I’ve also noticed about these books , they always have to have a kid with the mate even tho they already had with someone else or adopted so they always anyways have to have one that’s blood ?,,,whichhh kinda sends the message that those other kids weren’t enough or something even tho they’re always super aware and saying this isn’t bc of that and it won’t change and we don’t actually need or whatever but still idk
That probably didn’t make much sense and if I read this later I probably won’t know what talking about but oh well

Tricky themes reproductive things, pregnancy and adoption and stuff ,,, like just bc I don’t personally have any super strong feelings about that doesn’t mean other ppl won’t find it maybe even insensitive idk maybe not ,,

Well whatever I like this series and will continue reading it

The Omega's Alpha (Mercy Hills Pack #4) -
This was just an awesome book. The plot, the characters, and the details of the world the story was set in was very enjoyable to read. But, what I loved the most about it was the author's talent in creating a depth (in the personalities, the situations that the characters faced, etc) throughout the whole story. This is true about this whole series, actually.

while this is a romance, it's not just: boy meets boy, sex and more sex :-P, a crisis of some sort, a solution that is found and then they carry on happily ever after. While all these elements are there (don't mistake that for even a moment), there is a depth in the writing that makes the whole Mercy Hill series and this book, in particular, just more than just these usual components of a story. I loved, just loved, it! 5 stars *****

Long but so worth it

This is by far the longest book in the series so far, but it is worth it. I loved the slow love of Holland and Quin as they fought their insecurities to find each other.

This story was also more complex. It happens simultaneously with Duke's story, as well as beyond it. The style is the same as well with Holland's first person POV and third for Quin. I loved the way the packs came together and the events at Green Moon were chilling and horrific.

Whenever I think I found a favorite couple, I read the next book and discover I love the next one just as much if not more. I really hope Cale's story is told, and I would love to read more about Cosimo as well.

Fabulous!

I can't think of a single thing about this book that I didn't love. It was fantastic that we got to see Holland and Quin's relationship from the very beginning. When they met, neither was ready for a relationship, but they were attracted to one another. After each gets to a more healthy place, they came together to start their relationship and it was delightful to read with the interaction of all of the other couples that we have come to know in this series.

Added to that, I loved where the larger story about True Omegas and shifter history went with this book, and I'm excited to read further.

This is my favorite book of the series. I love Quin and Holland as a couple. I was great to see the somewhat bitter Holland not only give into Quinn's courting but slowly take over move responsibility for the pack and make a career in modeling. For Quinn I liked watching him struggle with his own military demons and wondering if he would make a good mate for Holland. I also liked this book because it really started branching the story out on the way shifters are treated and both Quinn and Holland fighting for Independence and equal rights for the shifter world. Their meeting with the president was almost as fun as watching Holland enter the modeling world.

Not good at all

I feel really bad for Quinn. He seems like a nice guy but was sidelined by the omega in this story. A omega who was bitchy, stuck up, and just down right rude, every chance he got. I do not think he ever had a kind word for anyone in this story. People made mistakes in the past and he lorded it over them. His "poor me" whinny got old after awhile. It was a long read and most parts I skipped, but it was worth it to realize just what a terrible person this dude is.

This is the fourth book in the (Mercy Hills pack series )

This book was amazing out of all the books in this series this one resonated with me the most the story the couple was just fantastic . I really like this series there are no instant sex instant love these couples may have unusual circumstances but the love and devotion is there the and the sex is scorching 🌋 . Plus the characters are relatable you see their struggle you feel their sorrow and you applaud their triumph this book out of all so far really moved me looking forward to more of this series .

I love this series and this was a great edition. I just loved Holland. The story gave such great emotional angst to his sad story. I felt the magnetic pull of his sorrow and sadness. I did like Quinn, and thought he was perfect for Holland. I will admit I didn't feel quite the connection with them and with other previous couples, but this series is by far one of my favorites and I love Ms Byrde writing style. Another wonderful Mercy Hills tale. Love.
