The Dark Woods #1

Crimson Moon

Rate this book
In the old days, people whispered about the wolf, said he came only at night, and only by the light of the full moon. They locked their doors and huddled close to their fires, safe in the knowledge they could prepare for his coming. The truth is, no one is safe, because the wolf walks in the skin of the man. Always.

Harlow Hayes is a runaway, thief, and failed Southern belle. Forced to grow up fast after what her mama delicately referred to as, ‘the incident,’ she learns the hard way not all strangers are kind, real monsters hide in plain sight, and family can be found in the most unexpected places.
Harlow Hayes is about to meet the Wolf.

She was a runaway on her way to her grandmother’s house after her mother told her to leave, that she was an abomination. Harlow Hayes was young, lost and looking for the acceptance she never received from her mother or her absent father. She was alone in a small diner and then he walked in, a loner, a man slightly feral, very rugged and even a little scary. Some would call him wolfish and they wouldn’t be wrong. But it was his inner Big Bad Wolf who felt a pull to the frail looking girl and one good deed was about to put all three of them on a journey the man would fight every step of the way while the Wolf was positive Red was “Pack.”

Sherri A Wingler takes us on her version of Little Red Riding Hood, all grown up and not so afraid of the Big Bad Wolf, who actually turns out to be a bit of a conniver, a comedian and even a love-sick puppy! Get ready to chuckle as Wolf wages mental Hell on Grey, as they play tug-of-war for control over Grey’s body! All Wolf wants is to mark her, to make Red his, to protect her and to make a few puppies, too. All Grey wants is to fight his attraction to the red-headed spitfire and get her to Grandma’s house, safe and in one piece. All Red wants is to be treated like a normal adult, not a freak with skin that can sear another with her touch. Oh, and she may just find a certain Wolf that crawls into her head to be a font of information regarding the surly and standoffish Grey. Information that will come in handy to drive the man nuts and make him putty in her hands!

Of course all is not fun and games over the hills and through the woods to Grandmother’s house and as it turns out, it isn’t the Big Bad Wolf that Red needs to fear, after all, even with those big, sharp teeth…

CRIMSON MOON is the tale of a young woman with supernatural abilities, a werewolf and their journey to a budding romance and out of the clutches of danger! Sherri A. Wingler has shown her creative chops as she ventures into fairytales all grown up! Forget the blood and gore, forget the high speed action, settle back as these characters come to life, make you chuckle, shake your head and discover that even in modern times, there is nothing better than a well-told fairytale! Will they ever make it to Grandma’s house? Read it! You’ll thank me later for the recommendation!

I received this copy from Sherri A. Wingler in exchange for my honest review.

Wow! What a phenomenal read!
Sherri truly has a gift for storytelling.
Synopsis:
Crimson Moon is a saucy read about two supernaturally-enhanced humans. Grey is a much different take on a werewolf. His wolf resides inside in the background of the man's mind, but he will emerge when he needs to--or if he thinks Grey isn't making the best choices. Claws and fangs also show themselves when danger threatens. When he runs into seventeen-year-old runaway, Harlow, he is in danger of losing his heart. Harlow, or 'Red' as Grey likes to call her, is haunted by her own gift turned curse. Life has become very hard for the young woman ever since her skin 'turned on.' Not only can she knock other people on their arses; she will also take a piece of whom they are into her own mind for a limited amount of time, hearing their voice and becoming privy to some of their secrets.
Both are hard-core loners, Red's own mother kicking her out of her home when she learned about her abilities and Grey leading the lonely life of killer for hire. When Grey takes pity on Red and attempts to buy her a meal in a diner, he gets more than he bargains for. Insulted, the young girl gives back the money for the meal but ends up accepting a ride with the surly werewolf, who decides to see her safely to her grandmother's doorstep. But as they make their way to Alaska, the friendship developing between the two may become a bond neither of them can live without
Review:
There were two things I loved the most about this novel: the snippy dialogue between the characters (and internally between both of them and the wolf) and the pacing and development of the relationship between the pair. Grey's dialogue with the wolf had me laughing out loud on several occasions, as well as the banter between Red and both Grey and the wolf's voice inside her mind. Some examples:
Wolf: "Our cubs are going to be idiots if they take after you."
Grey: "Shut up, flea bag. For once, you were useful."

Harlow to Grey: "Go pee a circle around some other girl."

Grey to Harlow: "I'll track you. Bring you back."...
Harlow to Grey: "Try it and I'll zap your sorry ass into next week."

The language was quite poetic in places, elevating the writing to a level beyond the norm. Some examples:
"Glass makes an almost cheerful sound when it breaks, like the shattering brings it joy."
"The screams went on and on for the longest time. I lost my battle to stay awake and fell asleep to them like a nightmarish lullaby."
"He tasted of cinnamon and coffee and dark promises."

The characters and plot were developed as well as the very natural flowing dialogue. I felt like I knew both Harlow and Grey very well, and the supporting characters were miles away from two-dimensional. Although there was plenty of sexual tension between the two main characters, it didn't slip into the realm of unnecessary, overblown sexual detail, nor did the characters just jump into bed together (besides to sleep) at the first convenient moment. A REAL relationship developed, one that is multi-dimensional and based on far more than base lust. The spicier parts of the book were executed perfectly with finesse and class and no nasty details (my own personal preference as a reader).
The action scenes were also well-written with plenty of detail and enough emotional impact to pull the reader into the scene and make me feel pain and anger along with the leading characters as I read them. There is a hint of mystery, especially toward the end, that left me guessing and eager to read the next book in the series. Like the best books and TV shows, the ending is left open, leaving me wanting to know more about the characters and how things would play out for them.
If you're a fan of snarky banter, well-developed supernatural creatures and sexual tension that leaves enough to the imagination, you will love this series. I can't wait to read book 2!
**An ARC of this book was provided to me, so I won't address any errors found (although they were few and far between) as the book was set for further editing.

I'm not sure if I'm ready to write this review yet, because I'm still numb from the ending. I knew it was coming. Even halfway through the book, I knew I didn't want it to end
Thankfully it's only book one in which I am POSITIVE will become one of my favourite PNR series. It is, frankly, stunning!
The book is a loose retelling of Little Red Riding hood...if you can imagine a fairy story filled with some of the best written sexual tension I've ever read.
Let me start with the characters. There are no goody-two-shoes toons in this book. Each one has a chequered past and character flaws which make them pop off the page and into your hearts. You will laugh. You will cry. You will snarl at the pages in frustration!
The plot picks you up on the first page and doesn't let up until it deposits you as a gibbering mess at the end. I know, because at this moment, I am said gibbering mess. I will recover, but I'm certain it'll be a few days before I can pick up another book.
A titanium-clad five stars!

OMG! OMG! OMG! I am speechless and for anyone who knows me that is a rarity. This book sucked me from the first lines and held me all the way through. The pacing is perfect all the way through the book, it is steady and builds the relationship between reader and the main characters. The last 20% of the book picks up the pace while your heart pounds inside your chest and you are unable to put the book down until the conclusion. And wow what an ending. There were twists and turns which I didn’t anticipate, just as I thought I was getting where it was going it swung a loop and blew my mind away.
Ok so maybe I’m not so speechless after all. This book deserves all the accolades that can be thrown at it.

The characters are strong and believable (in an unworldly way), they’re consistent and likeable. I love the dialogue between them and more than that I can’t say without giving anything away.

This author is now one of my favourite authors. Everything I read by her is of this quality and getting stronger.

Can I respectfully ask that the author gives up her social life in order to get the next two books out quickly. I need to read them. Finishing this book has left a gaping hole.
If I could give this more than 5 stars I would.

If you have any sense whatsoever you will pick this book up and devour it.
Oh and last but not least – wow on the cover.

Book 26 of my Reading Challenge
This book was over way too soon I am totally in love with Grey now I will just have to keep reading over my favourite sections. I will share them with you later. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Update

A novel easily devoured, a YA read with a twist in the tale of the Wolf & Red Riding Hood.

I love the work of this author, she never ceases to amaze with her stories for young adults, and ‘Crimson Moon' is no exception. There is a brand new twist in the tale of the wolf and little red riding hood, definitely not your average story or your general run of the mill werewolf book.

This wolf walks in the skin of man, not only when the moon is full but every single day.

That man is Grey Wolfe (a more than apt name) and although he is a bad guy, when it comes to ‘Red’ our little runaway Harlow Hayes, his thoughts are to help her. On the other hand the Wolf within simply wants to possess her and make her one of the pack.

I found myself devouring the book, for me it was a real page turner and I loved the main characters. Grey was my absolute favourite I see him as a handsome hottie, hard on the outside with a dreamy caramel filling, depending on the temperature either soft and gooey or firm to the bite.

Then there is Wolf the tough nut in the centre which sometimes I love and at others loath. Wolf acts upon sharp instincts, he is after all a creature of the wild but I found him at times annoying like the nut in the centre of a chocolate that gets stuck between your teeth. However, having said that he is a character you never forget the memories come back time and again just like the nut when a tiny piece falls and grazes your taste-buds releasing the full flavour once more.

Grey is a character made for dreams, the author gives us truly delectable descriptions so who would not fall for a handsome bad boy:-

‘Dressed all in black from his t-shirt and jeans to the beat-up leather jacket, Grey looked like someone you wouldn’t mess with. There’d been a five o’clock shadow on his jaw way before five o’clock, but it kept him from being a little too perfect.’

SA Wingler also gives him wonderful thoughts, you are almost placed within his boots experiencing the words for yourself as they seem to lift from the page and waft beneath your nose:-

‘The scent coming off her was pure happiness mixed in with peaches and rain.’

For me a truly remarkable read but oh my goodness when it ended I felt so bereft. I cannot wait for the next book in the series, in the meantime I will simply have to re-read my favourite parts and visit with Grey in my dreams.

VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Great read!

I really loved the different take on the wolf in this series. Harlow’s “skin condition” was like nothing I’ve read before and I found the possibilities of what she could do with it to be fascinating and I’m excited to see where it goes as the series continues. I really enjoyed the personality of the flc in this story. She had a lot of spunk and wasn’t overly whiny. I think Grey could’ve used a shot of self esteem at times. The wolf however was hilarious!
I would have to say that my only struggle with this story was how much Grey seemed to be stuck on the age difference. I really wanted a solid explanation for why it was such a big deal considering how close to “legal” she actually was.
Overall the relationship between the characters developed nicely. It wasn’t love at first sight, you actually watched them become friends and learn to trust each other throughout the story. Which brings me to the ending. I had a hard time not tossing my Kindle at the wall, and I’ll leave it at that.
As always with this author, this book was very well edited. There were very little errors not even worth mentioning. I will definitely continue on in this series!

Although, this is a new twist on Little Red Riding Hood with Red having a special gift. Harlow left home because her mother couldn't stand the sight of her. Harlow had to do what she had to to stay alive on the streets until she met Greyson.

Greyson saw a young woman who was lost and maybe hungry. Little did he know she was a spitfire. She would take him through changes, and get his wolf to go against him. Greyson knew she was his, but he knew something was lurking in the outskirts.

When Harlow learns who her father is, and learns that Greyson will go to ends of the earth for her. Would that be enough?

It's a good book, but I hope the ending was just a start for a book two.

This superb start to a new series is a fun, and easy to read, book.

It's loosely based on the Red Riding Hood fairytale, but so much better.

Sherri A. Wingler brought her characters to life and I joined Red, Grey and Wolf on their journey to 'grandma's house'.

The booked grabbed me on the first page and held on to me right to the end. Now I can't wait to read the next book and find out what happens next to Red, Grey and Wolf.

What a story!
I'm all for being honest with no spoilers.

Its took a little bit to get in to the narrative, but I wasn't disappointed once I got my teeth into it. The characters are wonderfully showcased. With the lead being Harlow there is no damsel is distress I loved that she had all these strong men but her heroism really was highlighted.

I will say there was enough twists and turns in the novel that I couldn't put it down I had to find out what happens as quickly as possible. But nothing was so extreme it was unrelatable. We all need a Grey to protect us, and Harlow is such a wonderful character. I need the second installment asap please?

THE BIG BAD WOLF!

I was giving an ARC in exchange for an honest review! I LOVED this book! It's a fast-moving fun read! I got so caught up in the characters, there were times I'd find myself yelling at Harlow or Grey to "watch out"! I loved all the twists and turns. I can't wait to read book two, so I can find out what happens next. This is a fun series, and it won't disappoint you. You'll be glad you picked this one up!!!

Sherri A Wingler is one of my all time favourite writers. I was enchanted and completely hooked by this amazing story. Based on the Red Riding Hood fairy tale, it reads nothing like a fairy story. Instead it reads like a modern fantasy, mixed with some sexy sizzle. The characters jump off the page and you can't help but absolutely love them or wish them a messy end. This is not the authors usual genre but she is utterly at home in this genre as mush as in YA. I can't wait to find out what happens Red, Grey and the Wolf. Bring on book 2 already!!!

A new twist on werewolves. This lovely book was very interesting and kept my attention. I love Harlow her spunk and her mean streak that comes out. to play. At times she seemed really young and I'm hoping to see her grow as these books continue. Grey. tsk tsk. There were many times I wanted to reach my hands inside my kindle and shake him. Now his wolf on the other hand. Loved him. I also love how the author wrote about the wolf as he was his own being that was cool. Confusing sometimes be cool. Overall this was a wonderful read full of action and romance, twist and turns. The ending, however, well let's just say I could have thrown my kindle. I will be waiting for the next book. Can't wait to see what happens with Harlow's journey and Grey.

OMG
I love books like Crimson Moon.
It is kind of a modern day Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. It is so different from all of the other books that try to do something with Red Riding Hood and the Big bad Wolf. I've starting reading the book again because I have fallen in love with Grey and Harlow. Grey didn't want Harlow to find out that he was a wolf but then she was okay with it. I also love the little talks that Grey has with his Wolf. They are funny.

I need more

I was really loving this book. Till the end. It was like watching a movie where the character finds out everything was just a dream. I was so upset I almost did my review right then. Glad I didn’t cause my should have been asleep brain missed that there was another book and I wasn’t going to be left with that ending. So excited to read the next book. And I hope dear old dad gets what he deserves from the Wolf.

Reviewed for Readers Favorite

She might be young and she might be on her own, but she wasn't unable to take care of herself; not that Grey knew that exactly but he could tell there was something different about her. She wasn't fully human that was for sure, and why he felt the need to take care of her and keep her with him, he couldn't really say, of course his wolf wanted her but she was way to young, not even eighteen yet. Harlow was used to not trusting anyone, but there was something about Grey that had her wanting to trust him and then, once she had him and his wolf in her mind, she was even more inclined to trust him, although things got even more confusing. Crimson Moon by author Sherri Wingler is not your typical shifter novel, in fact even though Grey is part wolf, there is never any shape shifting, its more like a split personality issue.

Crimson Moon is a complex and twisted story that involves Grey and his past in a way, but mostly Harlow and the secrets about her life and her birth. Even when she finds out the truth, things are not going to be happily ever after, there is always going to be trouble when a wolf is involved. Author Sherri Wingler takes a completely different approach to the wolf-man hybrid and instead of having him shift his shape into the wolf, it is just a personality takeover, nothing in the body, physically changes, but as Harlow learns more about Grey she can hear the difference in their voices, the way they walk and talk, the way they hold themselves. This is not something I have encountered in a novel before and it made for interesting reading, although there was a real love-hate relationship between Grey and his wolf that I questioned. Since this is labeled as Book One, I would hope that Grey's past and some of the demons that created that love-hate relationship might be explored at some point in the future because at this point, I am confused by it still. There is violence and some intimate moments, so I would definitely recommend this for adult readers.

Highly don't recommend

Really wanted to like it but I really didnt.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

So I was excited for this book. A light romance, suspense, not a reverse harlem book that involves a werewolf. But not just your typical werewolf. This one doesn't change... At all. When I think of a werewolf, I think of a wolf shifter, pack life. This wolf literally doesn't turn into a wolf at all! First of all, his "shift" involves his teeth getting longer/sharper and his finger nails lengthening. That it. It's so subtle that he can walk through a bar and no one would realize what he is besides his gold eye color. Secondly, I absolutely HATED the human and wolf personalities. They were constantly bickering inside his head about things and it was honestly really annoying. The human side didnt have any confidence to do anything and was always putting himself down in some way. I wanted more of a protective, strong, confident character. Not a self conscious human who argued with his wolf side and can never be on the same page.

Lastly, the age difference was a problem for me. That seemed to be the real issue in this entire book. They spent more time focusing on the fact that he didn't want to be with her yet because she was 17 and underage. I wish this book was more center in her being of age and having an actual problem to solve.

Not much action, underage relationship, non shifting self conscious wolf and no explanation of his wolf side of her "power". Honestly, don't waste your time. I tried to finish this book but I just couldn't.

Wrong information

Ok I'm over half way through the book and had to go back and reread the description of the book over and over, no where does it say that the wolf form stays a man from!!! Makes no sense to me that he didn't change, unless he just had a personality disorder or multiple personalities. Not something I like to read. I like my wolf to be furry not just a "bad boy". I could over look that and the long winded conversations they each had in there heads but I can't over look the information about the park in Savannah. I live an hour away and even I know the park is 30 acres which is 0.0469 square miles not 30 miles!!!!! Google is a very good tool to use for stuff like that! In fact Google said it is 0.12 km square. This could have been a really good book if it had less head talking and less repeating conversations. Do not understand all the great reviews. Sorry my opinion.

Too Much

I could not finish the book, I actually became sick to my stomach.
The constant reminding that the heroin was underage and the hero looked 30ish but was older was sick.
Why do this when it would have been easier to make him young or her at least 19-20.
It was constant about her age, her smell, her body etc...
I can not nor do I want to get into a book that reads like a pedophile looking for permission to mate with a kid.
The writer could not stay away from the age difference and the struggle with his and the wolf desire to mate a girl underage.
I'm disgusted

It was okay. The story was basically this: Grey "we can't be together. I'm too old and your too young"
Harlow" I'm an adult!"
Grey "okay you're my mate"
Harlow" jk I'm gonna choose my dad who i thought was dead and never knew until less than a week ago."
There wasn't any background on why Grey wasn't part of a pack or why (since he was apparently so old) did he hate his wolf so much?
