I'm a children's writer based in Scotland, and most of my fiction is inspired by the Scottish landscape and local legends. I love writing fantasy adventures for 8-12 year olds, including the Fabled Beast Chronicles and the Spellchasers trilogy, but I also love creating stories for other age groups. I've gone darker and more dangerous in my YA thriller MindBlind. And I've worked with amazing illustrators on picture books, including a retelling of the Scottish tale of the kelpie, The Secret of the Kelpie, with gorgeous pictures by Philip Longson, and a new fable about Nessie, The Treasure of the Loch Ness Monster, with fabulous artwork by Nataša Ilinčić. I've written collections of myths and legends, including heroine tales from all over the world in Girls Goddesses & Giants, and Scottish tales in Breaking the Spell and Viking saga tales in The Dragon's Hoard, both illustrated by the wonderful Cate James. I'm passionate about sharing old stories, creating new ones, and inspiring new young readers and writers. And I'm writing more adventures and retelling more myths, right now! But I'm also reading... I read a lot of non-fiction, because a lot of my fictional ideas are inspired by folklore and history. I also read a lot of children’s fiction, because kids get all the best stories! And sometimes I remember how old I am, and read books for adults. I also love discussing books, and answering queries about my books and stories, so please do get in touch. After the events of the previous book I was eager to make a start on The Shapeshifter's Guide to Running Away. Molly is the only one left with her curse, and it's getting harder to change back to human each day. With the help of her new friends they travel to the Promise Keepers Hall to find a cure for the curse. But upon arrival they find that the enemy is closer to home than they realised.
I really enjoyed getting to see the team back together again working to help Molly find a cure for her curse. We also get a proper introduction to Theo (the toad) who eventually decides to help Molly, but his initial introduction wasn't the best, and doesn't earn him any points on making friends and this animosity does continue throughout the book.
I really liked the new task the team has from visiting the Promise Keepers Hall, and how this is represented on the cover itself. The whole magical world of the Spellchasers series sounds such a wonderful, if not creepy place....especially with the newest creatures we get to meet within the pages of The Shapeshifter's Guide to Running Away. I loved getting to see the characters personalities and abilities shine out even more, especially when they are put to the test. However I think there was a character that was slightly too judgemental which put a lot of strain on the friendship, as well as the task at hand.
Final Verdict I really enjoyed The Shapeshifter's Guide to Running Away. The team has grown in themselves as well as a friendship, but there are still 'real' problems of teenagers and friendships that everybody goes through. I liked how more of this magical world was revealed to us and it makes me even more eager to crack open the pages of the next book and get started.
I've been reading the book on and off for a few months. You have to read them in order so you know what is happening. The book is ok, now I've read the first two I really need the last one.
An assured follow-up to the first book in the trilogy. I loved getting to see the team from the first book reunited and learn more about them, especially as they have to become more independent because all of the adult witches and wizards are mysteriously disappearing. I liked Theo as a new character (at least in human form) and his magic opens up lots of possibilities for the third book. I really enjoyed how each character developed, with Innes standing up against his father, Atacama balancing the demands of his family and friends, Molly wrestling with the fact that she actually enjoys part of her curse and Beth realising that things might not be as black and white as she had assumed. In fact, I think that this understanding of the grey areas of magic is a theme throughout the book. Can't wait to read Part 3!
Bought this for my 9 year old and he loved it! Great characters and an engrossing plot make it perfect reading for kids and adults. Looking forward to reading the others in the series.
This is the second book in the Shapeshifter trilogy and Lari has really upped the jeopardy for our heroes, especially Molly. This story is full of magical imagination; it's like the magical ideas equivalent of a sweetie shop. As someone who loves magical adventure stories I was in my element. Sometimes the middle book in a trilogy can suffer from being the bridge between beginnings and ends but this has not happened here at all. Guide to Running Away is a story all in itself whilst neatly and cleverly preparing the reader for the finale in book three. Lari has also upped the scary stuff too and the ethical dilemmas. As always Lari has created not just a stonking good story to read and enjoy but a book that schools can get their teeth into and use as an exceptional teaching tool for issues such as friendship dilemmas, environment, debating right and wrong, and ethics.
