The most famous hardware man in the world (well, maybe) returns with his eclectic bunch of staff and dysfunctional customers in this short "equel" to How Much for a Little Screw?
As if things aren't bad enough, a gang of roaming conmen and women descend upon Little Sniffingham and threaten to strip and plunder, sparing no one.
Feeling helpless, he is determined to find a way of combating the rogues, but no one knows who they are, nor how and where they will strike next, and it isn't long before the victims begin dropping like flies.
Sharon: "This job ain't just about keeping shop – it's about keeping friends."
GRAHAM HIGSON lives in an outlying Pennine village and shares this blustery environment with a growing collection of books, a workshop piled high with offcuts of oak, his understanding wife and one mean mortgage. His two grown-up children are among his best friends.
Having written professionally for over 40 years (when he was at school, he says)), Oak Seer: A Supernatural Mystery was the first of his published novels, followed by Flither Lass, his historical novel set during WW1, and his How Much For a Little Screw? series of fictionalised memoirs
He lists his hobbies as swimming, reading, watching lots of screen drama, helping to republish the novels of Leo Walmsley, and searching for that elusive moment of self-discovery.
I loved Graham Higson's previous full length book 'How Much for a Little Screw' and what a delight to find that he's writing more 'episodes' from his time behind the counter in a DIY/Hardware store. This makes for many interesting and amusing interludes. If you've already read the first, this is a great addition-but it can certainly standalone too.
I love the local accent expressed through the writing. Ha ha! Is there really a product called this? On consulting my 'Screwfix Direct Catalogue'-yes there is!!!! A fair few chuckles and an entertaining read. The weird, wonderful and downright funny things customers ask for in a regular little hardware and DIY store! Some absolutely priceless quotes and laugh out loud moments. And suddenly: Serious stuff too.
A great companion volume to the original How Much for a Little Screw book-I hope there will be more episodes. A great fun quick read.
All the characters are back from Little Sniffingham!
I read Graham's first book "How much for a little screw". It was a hoot, so I had to grab a copy of the " equel". All the main characters are in full swing for a mystery. Poor Maggie does get the shaft for awhile while Graham runs around town trying to solve the mystery of the Con artists. Great little sequel and ready for more Sniffingham shenanigans!
