All private eye Jaxon Jennings wanted was a vacation— just a few days to lie under the warm Caribbean sun with a cold beer. A much-deserved break from tailing cheating spouses, ex-cons, and insurance scammers.
But Jaxon’s hopes for time off are upended when his friend Max’s strange behavior lands the poor guy in the middle of an island murder investigation.
Jaxon works hard, and fast, to clear his friend’s name but makes a startling discovery: Max is a man with a dark past.
Unfortunately, someone from that dark past wants Max in prison or dead or both—along with anyone who tries to protect him. Desperate for answers, Jaxon races to save Max from a killer—and a murder rap.
Can Jaxon exonerate his friend in time, or will the killer find him first? Is Jaxon next on the hit list?
From the first page of his latest Jaxon Jennings thriller, Eye Strain, author Richard C Hale mashes the gas and refuses to let up. A pulse-pounding manhunt that hooks you in and refuses to let go, Eye Strain will keep you guessing to the very end.
Richard C Hale has worn many hats in his lifetime including Greens Keeper, Bartender, Musician, Respiratory Therapist, and Veteran Air Traffic Controller. You can usually find him controlling Air Traffic over the skies of the Southeastern U.S. where he lives with his wife and children.
'm finished with Eye Strain: I finished Eye Strain last week and as usual Richard gives us a good fast paced thriller this one was a little different and really kept us busy until the end good strong characters kept you interested all the way through my only problem was it was a little short top read waiting eagerly know for the next book from Richard 5 starts
I really enjoyed this book, it is set on a Caribbean island where Jaxon is due spend some down time with a group of friends, but one of them manages to get himself involved in a murder investigation. As always with Richard Hale's books, the characters are well drawn, the plot is original and pleasingly convoluted and the pace is maintained from the start. I particularly like Jaxon Jenning's rather curmudgeonly character. The final explanation of the mystery is surprising and makes for a very exciting ending. It has been a while since the previous book in this series, but it was definitely worth the wait! I did receive a free copy of this book, but I have no other affiliation with the author and voluntarily wrote this review based on my own opinions.
What a cracking opening, a blast from the past into Jaxon Jennings Army days and one that I think would be etched into his mind until the day he dies. Back in present day Jaxon, his wife and two sets of friends are taking a well deserved holiday in the Caribbean, Jaxon and Vick, Max and Shelly, Ray and Laurelyn. They are all more like family then friends and have that banter and leg pulling that never manages to insult no matter what is said. A perfect setting with perfect friends and away from all the hustle and bustle of work but we are talking Jaxon Jennings of course and if he isn’t the cause of trouble it still seems to follow him. Trouble doesn’t take a day off, not where Jaxon is concerned. This break away from it all is soon going to be turned into a bit of a bus man’s holiday for all concerned. Leaving them with a feeling of more like being on Alcatraz than a paradise island.
I have been reading Richard Hale’s books for a few years now and he always wows me with his originality and this book is no exception. The thing that I love the most is how he takes that extra step with a plot. He is a master of suspense that will play with your mind and deliver the goods when you least expect it. You really have to love Jaxon. He isn’t a young bloke anymore and makes it perfectly clear that he doesn’t suffer fools gladly but boy does he give a 100% dedication to getting the job done. He really cares for those that matter. The banter that goes on between him and Vick is just magic. What a perfect pair.
The characters in the book are all very easy to remember because the book isn’t over crowded with people that don’t need to be there. All of the Jaxon Jennings novels are very different with this one for me having a bit of a James Bond feel. It is a pure adrenaline filled mind blowing Wow!
I wish to thank Richard Hale for an ARC of this novel which I have chosen to review.
Fast pace like Richard C Hale's other books. Good read. I bought it the very day it was released and finished it the next day. Lots of adventures and surprises along the way. I did enjoy it but government/spies are not my favorite books to read.
P.I. Jaxon Jennings goes on a Caribbean vacation, wanting nothing but relaxation. Soon he finds his long time friend Max involved in a murder investigation. Besides his (Max) unusual behavior, he has a hidden past, which is not favorable. Now the past is catching up with Max, someone want him in prison or dead. Will Jaxon be able to help his friend, without being targeted as well.
A fast paced action filled original thrilling story. I liked Jaxon since I read the first book, and I still like him now. A page-turning thriller, with a lot of twists turns and who-done-it up until the very end. I found Eye Strain very enjoyable and feel others will as well. I highly recommend to those who love thrilling reads.
I kept reading and waiting and reading and then I didn't care anymore. I wasted hours on this book. Liked jason Jennings earlier but won't look for more.......couldn't finish this one.
The author has again written a book that draws you in and holds your interest from the first page to the last page. The twists and the unexpected in the book surprises the reader. I recommend this book to all mystery fans.
I have become a fan of Richard Hale. I have ready a few of the Jaxon Jennings series. They are all unique and fast-paced and hard to put down. Keep them coming.
I love the Jaxon Jennings series by Richard C Hale and this, latest, book didn’t disappoint. The book begins with Jaxon and Vick taking a much needed holiday, away from work and an energetic 2 year old, on a paradise island. They arrive soon after the first murder victim is found and the holiday is ended before it began as their friend is suspected of the murder.
This book has so much going on with explosions, dead bodies and events from the past rearing their ugly heads.
Jaxon's character has been successfully built in previous books and I like the way that Richard has written this book in a way that it can be read very successfully as a stand alone but is still the latest book in the series for those of us that have read the earlier books. Jaxon is a ex policeman who is now a PI helped by Ray who is also a Policeman. Their partners, who make up this foursome, are FBI agents. The 4 people make for a very effective investigative team with contacts and access to information to enable this.
The events on the Island bring them into the sights of the local Policeman who is a very unique frenchman who develops a very unusual relationship with Jaxon and his friends.
The story centres around Max who was badly injured in a car accident and was saved by Ray and Laurelyn who happened to be in the right place at the right time. He loses his memory and rebuilds a new life but people want him to return to his previous life and will stop at nothing to get him back or eliminate him.
There is a spy and secrecy element to this story which adds to the suspense that starts on page 1 and builds throughout the book.
A book that grabs the reader from the beginning and doesn’t let go. I eagerly await the next book.
I won a free copy of this book in the Launch Promotion competitions.
Another fantastic book from Hale. I have read pretty much all of his books now and I have enjoyed every single one of them. This on has a different setting and Jennings is trying to enjoy a holiday with his friends but obviously strange things start to happen, and Jennings can't just sit back and ignore them. This book has twists and turns along the way and keeps you guessing until the end which is great. I won't give away what happens, I recommend giving it a read as you won't be disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed and second of this book and I'm sad I've finished it. I can't wait for the next book to come out. I was given an ARC from the author and have chosen to give an honest review.
A most enjoyable read by a talented writer, Richard C. Hale. His books keep getting better! I have read all of this author's books and have found them all to be engrossing page turners.
This new book, Eye Strain, is a fast-paced thriller that keeps the heart pounding at ever turn of events. What was supposed to be a relaxing vacation for the protagonist, Jaxon Jennings, turns out to be a mad chase to find the killer as more bodies turn up on this island vacation. A friend's life is threatened and Jaxon, fellow detective now PI, and his police officer friend, Ray, find themselves trying to solve a growing mystery as they become embroiled in more than they planned. Their very lives are on the line if they do not either get off the island or help local law enforcement stop the killer.
There are some surprises along the way that keep the reader guessing until the end. There is plenty of excitement and interesting characters abound throughout the story that keep the tension going up a notch.
I highly recommend this and all Hale's books to anyone looking for a thriller with a kick. I was gifted an ARC of this book and chose to give an honest review.
New book in the Jaxon Jennings series came out a few days ago. A fantastic read that kept me turning pages, and not wanting to put it down. The plot was intriguing, keeping me on the edge of my seat. There are certain actions and phrases Mr. Hale over uses at times. For example, if a character cried one single tear again, I was gonna scream. A tad distracting to me, but it didn't stop my enjoyment of this book. All I have to say is "come on April," so I can read the next story! !!
A fast paced, well crafted tale that keeps the reader glued to the page with a plot that twists more than a mountain back road. A totally enjoyable read through and through!
An excellent instalment in the Jaxon Jennings series, that both gives a glimpse into Jaxon's past and has a rollercoaster adventure in the present, set in the beautiful Carribean. The writing is (as usual for Richard C Hale!) excellent and really draws you into the story, and the characters are really realistic and you really care about what happens to them. I loved this book, and really recommend it, both to Jaxon Jennings fans, and to people who just like a mystery story with a bit of action/adventure in them - you don't really need to have read any of the previous Jaxon books to read this one! NB I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in return for an HONEST review
