If you want a light, uncomplicated read, this book is for you. I knew it was a ghost story when I started to read it and had been assured that it wasn’t a ‘horror, get behind the sofa’ sort of tale, for which I was highly relieved.
The story is set in the past, so courting and carriages appear; don’t we all love the romance of those times! This story has an interesting mix of characters, from Leigh’s rather headstrong sister to the rather-too-young-and-spoilt bride, from the rather delicious Robert to the stiff-collared Bernard.
I felt that the mishaps and misadventures of the young married couple rather detracted from what I felt should be the main storyline – that of the ghost and his past which caused him to haunt the place; I felt that in all truth, the author could have made more of the ghost’s background and reasons for the haunting. While I was glad that it was not a horrific ghost story, I think I would have liked the odd shiver, which I really didn’t get, in spite of the coldness and so on. I felt that, all in all, Leigh was rather too used to seeing ghosts that it neither surprised her nor bothered her much, except when she finally realised that the ghost could be a danger to her and that she was expected, somehow, to resolve the situation.
Having said that, I did enjoy reading this book; the writing was good, the characters well-developed and you could identify with the main character, Leigh, especially in her love for Robert. I don’t appreciate books where I can’t ‘get into’ the characters and I did with this book, even with Lucy, who needed some ‘help’ to get her marriage off the ground – what a good bunch of cousins and brother she had!
