I pretty much enjoyed this one. I missed Sylvia Day's writing and her books in general. I needed just that after the Shades of Magic trilogy that almost got me in a book hangover.
Dunno if it's me or this book but I'm not feeling any of this.
No chemistry since we have instalust here and they jump to bed 2 hours after meeting. And that was barely chapter 3. And once they started, they went on and on and on. And I hated that.
Plus, the heroine was just far from what I expected.
Or liked.
So nah.
I wanted to like it but I just didn't. Couldn't. There's nothing but fucking. No emotions, no connection, no character development.
And I think the biggest disappointment was simply the fact that this one is much longer than the previous books from the series so I expected more.
I wanted depth, I wanted feelings. I wanted something that would make me swoon. Because the synopsis sounded pretty good to me.
All I got was insta fucking and I guess that's it.
That was a wasted potential. And I couldn't care less how it goes.
Ok this name does not do this book justice. I should have kept a hose close by with the way this one lit me on FIRE. I found myself keep notes & highlighting my favorite lines. I wrote one note as the best line. This is Jared describing just meeting Darcy "She was hot monkey sex in a brown paper wrapper."
I think at one point I highlighted 2 entire pages. Sylvia day writes oral sex with such a ferocious passion that I was biting my lip so hard I tasted blood. I'm going to quote again and yes it gets dirty, NC-17 dirty so hold on to your panties..."I'm going to shove my tongue into your tight little hole and tongue-fuck you so often you'll feel strange when my mouth is not buried between your legs." Lots of dirty talk in this book and sex takes it up a notch on the kink factor.
Darcy is a fire inspector in a small town investigating a series of arson incidents. Each is a place that Darcy is tied to in some way. After the third, she calls in for help. Jared, a Deputy Marshal arrives and is hot on the case. Insta-lust also flares up. This was decent. Very heavy on the sex, but it also had a plot. I liked Darcy's vocation, different for a change. She also saved herself towards the end, so mad props to that. Jared was also likable, and I liked that he had moments where he was distracted. I would have liked more on the mystery and Danielle. The suspense element could have been better. Everything was wrapped up, but *more* would have been wonderful. The "why" was lacking IMO. But, this did have halfway decent plot to all the sex that was happening on the page.
On Fire has an apt title. The main characters certainly behaved as if they were on fire for each other, and it was a series of fires that brought them together.
This was actually my second time reading this story. I first read it a couple of years ago as part of Hot in Handcuffs anthology. It was the story I liked best in it. It was also a time when Sylvia Day's books and I got along so great. Now my tastes have shifted in other directions, but still I wanted to read this series, and even re-read this one. For old times sake, I guess, and because I needed something on the lighter side to read. But, as was to be expected, I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first time.
Darcy Michaels is a fire inspector, and when a series of fires went without getting any closer to identifying the arsonist, she called for outside help, and as fate would have it, that outside help included a man who'd soon set her body on fire, give her countless orgasms, and become very important to her that she couldn't imagine her life not including him, and that man's name is Jared Cameron. By soon I mean really soon, as in mere-hours soon that it all started, but somehow Ms. Day wrote these characters and the connection they felt that it all seemed natural.
On Fire is the longest Shadow Stalkers story, and while the others were about characters who had a history, here we have MCs meeting for the first time, so it's a good thing they had extra pages to develop their sizzling relationship. Jared and Darcy didn't waste a minute, and if I can say one thing about Ms. Days books, it's that they pack a lot of heat. For the most part, I like it, but honestly, after a while the whole "Oh, you're so tight" and "You're so big" and "You make me so hot" and whatnot talk gets to be a bit too much and rather annoying. Dirty talk is fine, but I would prefer it smaller doses. The same is with overly detailed descriptions. Nevertheless, Darcy and Jared were hot together, and I will give credit to Jared for only calling Darcy "baby" once. I wish it was none, because that is one of my big pet peeves, but I can live with once.
Bigger page count also allowed for some mystery and suspense to be a part of On Fire. As I said it was an investigation that brought Darcy and Jared together, and it uncovered some interesting connections to a past crime, which ultimately put Darcy in danger. It was interesting reading that. I didn't blow my mind or anything, but these stories, I believe, are mostly to have fun reading them, which I did. But now I think I'm ready for something different.
After almost two dozen titles by Sylvia Day, including contemporary, historical, and paranormal books, I can safely say that of all of them I liked her historicals best. I hope she'll write more of those. Until then, excluding One with You, I really don't see myself reading her books any time soon.
Scherzi?!?!? Diamine Darcy!!!!
This is currently the last in the U.S. Marshals series. The book is well named, not just due to the steamy scenes but the arsons plaguing a small town. There was almost no connection to prior characters, but it continues the theme of Marshals and is just mind candy. In some ways, it is like a Bugs Bunny cartoon – simply there for entertainment without being heavy on meaningful content. (*wink*) I read the ebook. 4/5
Sylvia Day’s “On Fire” is a steamy and suspenseful novella that perfectly blends passion with intrigue. Set against the backdrop of a sun-soaked paradise, the story follows Deputy Marshal Jared Cameron, who is tasked with investigating a series of mysterious fires. His investigation leads him to Darcy Michaels, a beautiful and enigmatic woman with secrets of her own. As the heat between them builds—both figuratively and literally—Jared must determine whether Darcy is an innocent bystander or deeply involved in the arson cases.
Day’s signature style is evident throughout the novella, with sizzling chemistry, intense emotions, and a fast-paced plot that keeps readers engaged. The romance is electric, with well-developed characters that feel authentic despite the shorter length of the story. Jared is a strong and brooding hero, while Darcy is an independent and resilient heroine, making their dynamic compelling from start to finish.
Though “On Fire” is a novella, it doesn’t feel rushed. The plot moves quickly, but Day still manages to build tension, both in the romance and the suspense elements. That said, some readers may find the resolution a bit abrupt, as novellas naturally have less room for drawn-out storytelling. However, the passionate romance and engaging mystery more than make up for it.
Overall, “On Fire” is a quick, satisfying read for fans of romantic suspense. Sylvia Day delivers her signature heat and intensity, making it a great choice for anyone looking for a short but thrilling escape.
Great little novella, action, steam and great characters, Sylvia never fails to impress me, she managed to craft a great story in few pages. Two minor nitpicks: -Every single male character was obsessed with Darcy in a way I found sort of unrealistic, like I get she was attractive, but come on. -Not specific to this book, but in general I dislike when the villain is someone we knew previously and only in the climax he starts acting like a complete loon, like you were fine two chapters ago mate, what happened? Also I would have liked to understand his motives a bit more, like why was he a loon all of a sudden? I did like the lack of I love yous exchanged (or not), Darcy and Jared knew each other for a few days, and even though their connection was there, no instalove was present which is a win in my book, knowing they will simply try seeing each other is enough of a happy ending for me.
This one was longer than the other novellas in the series. I again could only get it on audiobook and I fast forwarded or tuned out through most of the sex scenes. I always wonder if foul language is a fun escape for people or if there really are everyday people that say those things. I mean, I’m sure there are, but that’s a turn off for me. Again, I like some imagination left. I LOVED her Crossfire books. Maybe it wasn’t as vulgar or graphic? Or maybe the relationships were just better established and I could just skim over those parts. I don’t recall. Anyway, the characters in this book were ok, but I had a hard time keeping them straight on an audiobook where many names were similar. I would often forget who was even talking or who was there in the “scene.” I have done other audiobooks I’ve loved, but generally prefer actual books. Unfortunately libraries are currently closed. 😕
I absolutely loved the Crossfire series ❤ not long ago I tried reading another Sylvia Day book - It was a book trying to recapture the CF books and I honestly felt like exact or close to parts/phrases used. Turned me off immediately
Randomly I tried this one giving the author another shot. Although this is definite not anywhere in the realm with CF - it was still a decent book & held on to my attention. I enjoyed reading it.
Bottomline: Short & steamy, perfect intro to Sylvia Day if you haven't read her before.
This is a novella part of a series but you can read it as a stand alone. I highly recommend this novella to get a feel for the author. She has a series I LOVE (the Marked series) but this novella gives you her style in a short "wham-bam-thank-you-madame" package. She packs in SO many spicy moments in a short read. Seriously sexy stuff here. Not for the timid!
