The feature ended last volume; this book is just full of bonus features. We are presented with several fine if not particularly important side stories about what the supporting cast was doing while the time traveling protagonist was in a coma or working on his own to prevent the Darkest Timeline from occurring. Not bad, but not essential either.
Definitely got a few happy/sad tears out of me. Not a necessary addition to the story, but if you love Erased as much as I did, it's a wonderful companion.
Loved this!!! Very emotional going through why people dealt with during one of the main plot-points in the main series.
I found this a little superfluous as we had an idea already of what was going on with the characters but it’s nice to get a bit more backstory on them and an insight into their home lives apart from Satoru.
The artwork is the same gorgeous stuff you’d expect and all the short stories are really heart-felt!!
Tears and cheers as we see the story from new perspectives.
Like in movies sometimes a series cannot always get a chance to tell all of the stories involved in the pages due to timing and space but thankfully this fantastic series of 2nd chances turned murder mystery got a chance to tell some of these stories sfter the story concluded. Liek the other omnibus volumes this book (although smaller in width and price) has a nice hardcover that is simple white with silver lettering on its spine which you may or may not even notice thanks to the dust protector that comes with the volume showing Airi in her iconic picture viewing finger pose.
What I did not expect when opening the book was the story about Kayo being so well drawn that I started amused as she was older then they show the scene of her and her classmates being told about the fate of Satoru. I am not going to spoil it for those that have not read the actual story yet but I suddenly felt rage, sorrow, and sympathy as Kayo dealt with her own feelings upon hearing the truth. Literally so emotional tears started and I had to put the book down.
The rest of the book was good too but thankfully it did not have the same emotional impact of the first chapter though Kenya's chapters are a good summery of the story through the eyes of the child who had to grow up to fast in his own ways.I also loved how Sachiko's chapter was told in a diary format and we get to see her reasons for her actions in the series as well as her internal thoughts and finally we see a bit into Airi's world as she seeks out changes in her own world just to discover a person that she will change forever in her own way. So many good stories and a fine end to a great series. :)
I didn’t expect to like this book but I did. This is a book with POVs from other characters - main protagonist’s friends (the one he tries to save, his best friend and the girl he likes in present day) and his mom. I realized how well all the characters in this series were developed since I feel for every single one of them deeply, even when the main protagonist is not there. Definitely one of my favorite series ever. I am very sad that this series ended.
This volume is not necessarily a part of the series but it will help you understand the perspective of other characters and how Satoru's case affected them individually. I can honestly say that it is emotional and it helped me understand the characters far better than I did before.-- And this concludes the whole series! I already jump started on watching ep1 of the live TV version and it is so far, so good. The actors really capture those of in the manga and although they aren't what I imagined and vibe(d) them to be, their performance is still great. I also love the cinematography of the whole series, although the opening theme resembles a horror one. I'm not exactly sure why I'm babbling about the TV series here but just checkin' in to recommend it. (HAHA!)
~*~ " Congratulations... on your graduation! There have been many...fun things...sad things...successes...and failures. Today you graduate elementary school...but I'm sure there's a part of you that's not fully satisfied. That goes for me too. And yet...I think filling in...that 'hole' in your heart...is what life is all about."
" I was yearning for the things that Satoru had, like 'determination' and 'consideration. What I wanted was right here...in my friends! I became able to take more direct action (although only where Satoru was concerned). I became able to say what I truly felt (although only to Satoru). Like Hiromi, I became able to appreciate everyone's good points. -- Every day from then on was like a jewel to me."
"Kenya-kun...you've got it wrong. Regret...is necessary...but you can't blame yourself for what happened. What you should think about is how to expand on your virtues. There must have been something you did that you can look back on and praise yourself for. "
"It's not a bad thing to have a goal that's far way. But you haven't reached even that step yet. First, do everything you can where you are right now, giving it all you've got. After that you can focus on the crimes and such."
"Kindness is all around me. And it's thanks to you I was able to change."
"Risk should be avoided. But..they musn't be feared. When you become an adult...you get more responsibilities. Just comes with the territory. The more you saddle yourself with...the harder the legwork becomes. What I want to do is just play it safe...and risk letting my judgment get dull. Yeah. Luckily our advantage right now...is that we're not afraid of risk...so we can act freely." If not today, tomorrow. If not tomorrow, one day...one day I want him to become a boy who doesn't abandon things."
"Katagiri-san...what's your goal with these photos? I take photos of the sky because to me the sky represents 'possibility' itself. Cameras and photos don't lie. I think that's why the photographer's feelings can be conveyed to the person looking at the photo. A faraway family...a special someone I haven't met yet...a place to fit in...me...all those things...are under this one sky. That kind of feeling is my goal."
"Failure...isn't 'square one'. Depending on you, it could have square ten, or even twenty! It's okay to return to the starting line over and over. That's where you learn from your failures and set out again. Airi, your single-mindedness and loyalty to your own sense of 'justice' are good...but you lack patience. So maybe quitting your job was a 'failure'? Still, there's nothing wrong with failure...as long as you don't let it go to waste...okay?"
"I like this silence. On snowy days...there are fewer people and cars. A stillness comes. It kind of feels like the world...is being reset."
"Your kindness and cheerfulness...saved me."
"I guess I mean more like, your heart suffers...from lack of oxygen. You've got a lot to offer (like your smile), Airi...so try not to forget that. "
"..But I think...places that stay in your heart and mind are places in which you can recall things that become 'keys'...which form your current self. --So...I enjoy writing and drawing memorable places and moments...as well as hearing about other people's 'places'."
This is my first review on a Manga. And this is the second Manga which I have completed. The first was Death Note. I did not feel much suspense while reading Death Note since I had watched the Anime before reading the Manga. But reading Erased (English name of Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi) was a touch different, and hence the motivation to write something about it. Below are my good and bad aspects of this Manga.
THE GOOD
No time is allocated for plot setup, and character establishment. It straight away dives into the plot. I found the story to be very interesting. It took me a while to get connected, but once I crossed three Episodes I was hooked to it. I did not expect this Manga to be going into the cat and mouse genre, as I thought from the initial episodes that this was mainly about “reruns”. The killer reveal was good, though it was not top notch. The suspense building is what I enjoyed the most in this Manga. The school portions were so good to read, especially the chemistry between Satoru and Hinazuki. Volumes 2–8 raged like fire, and absolutely kept me in the hook. I also loved the friendship between Satoru and Kenya.
THE BAD
I had difficulty processing what the heck was going on in the first few pages of the first few episodes. And this continued even at some other episodes towards the end. I felt few portions were rushed, and did not have proper explanation or the sketching to help the plot. I was not sure why there was Volume 9. I get that it dwelled into few character’s backstory and how it all connected to Volume 8 (which is the actual ending), but that should have been before Volume 8. Basically both the volumes could have been swapped.
FINAL SAY
To be honest, I picked this Manga as a means to increase the number of books I read in 2024. My initial plan was to read 4 or 5 Volumes at max. But I ended up binge reading this completely, as the plot sucked me into its world. This had a closure compared to my previous Manga read (One Piece), which I have not completed yet. I had found this Manga title, when I began researching about Manga similar to Death Note. Now that I have completed this, I understand why Erased showed up when I looked for something like Death Note. A short (I think?) and a gripping story!
Cerita spin-off dari komik utama.
Paling heartwarming pas ortunya peduli banget sama Kenya.
Sachiko Fujinuma, ibunya Satoru.
Kerja jadi fotografer. Kayaknya jarang senyum, tapi pas memutuskan senyum malah ketemu masa depan wkwkwk XD
I had no idea this was out, and then I saw it at Barnes & Noble. So I didn't buy it and read it on one of their uncomfortable chairs instead like a good opportunist.
I'm on the fence about this. On the one hand, I'm glad to read something else in this series because I like it so much. On the other, I think these stories detract from the strength of the series because of the changes in perspective. Our experience reading 僕だけがいない街 is limited to that which happens to Satoru. To me, the series is complete with his story alone. And, though it's interesting to see what the other characters went through, these feel like an unfocused fan-service afterthought. As if the editor said, "Hey, let's make more money," and this is what popped out. It's like that your name. Another Side: Earthbound fiasco that I read last month. That thing was just unnecessary. But I like 僕だけがいない街, so I'll allow it here.
The stories themselves, for what they are, aren't bad. They're not great, but they're not bad.
This is a new scenery to me as this involves a different point of view for this volume. To be specific, this serves as a spotlight for Satoru’s beloved friends and mother who mean the world to him.
I love how we’re getting a refresher on everything that’s happened in their perspective. It’s like gathering the little pieces together until you’ve come to the point you’ve connected point A to point B and before you know it, you’ve got a figure of your own to marvel at.
Out of the characters presented in this refresher of a volume, I like Sachiko’s the most. Sachiko Fujinuma, Satoru’s mother, is a brave warrior. I have to hand it to her for overcoming the battle she has to carry alone from what happened to her son. I can’t imagine how much she’s been through being a single mother to Satoru and earning a living for their own sake at the same time.
Juggling them accordingly is sure to be a chore, but knowing her personality, she isn’t the sort who dwindles over life’s inconveniences. That’s Sachiko-san for you.
This is a bonus story volume focusing on a few people close to Satoru and what they did after Satoru fell into coma (except Airi's story takes place in different time). It was nice to learn a bit more about the other characters because I mostly like the supporting cast more than Satoru himself. I liked Sachiko's chapter the most because it revealed what she had thought during some events of the main series and also tiny bits of how she was in the school, further demonstrating how awesome she is. Ken'ya's story was quite a quickfire even though he got more pages than others but what I liked about it was how it showed what a good bunch of those kids were and how they supported each other even though they didn't always even do it consciously.
Nice little extra but not a mandatory read, it doesn't add anything super important to the story. Art is what it is.
This said number five and it felt like it fit. You found out what happens to everyone when Satori is in a coma. You also get a glimpse of Ari so you feel something is up with why she is so important but I can’t figure it out. You learn about Kenya and Satoru’s mom who is awesome! Kenya felt he was missing something until he got involved with Satoru. He was pretty arrogant and mean as a kid which was surprised cause you know him as a good person from Satoru’s perspective. Then you saw from Satoru’s mom’s life of helping her abused friend and why Satoru was so unmatched to people and things because he didn’t want to get hurt, and how she viewed his sudden change. Nice little filler book can’t wait to see the rest.

Like the author said at the end of volume 4, there was still a bit that needed to be said. That being true, even though this volume offers a different point of view on relevant events and explains a bit more about what the characters besides Satoru went through, at the end, maybe it is the romantic in me that would like to see a little bit more of Satoru’s future. I guess I was looking forward to it with this volume. In any case, at least for me, one of the signs that I’ve read a good story is when I have a hard time of letting go of its characters and the story itself, and since that is what happened with Erased, I think even with this small complain all 5 volumes are really great and I’m glad Kei Sanbe decided to add this 5th one.
It was intresting seeing the perspective of Kayo, Kenya, Sachiko, and Airi. Kayo was fun and uplifting to see her start the life she never got before, to see her live in the now. It was brilliant to see Kenya's dedication to his friends and dreams, the way he went for justice and he became one of my favorite character interlude. Sachiko was so heart warming and the way she always uplifted Satoru was lovely. To see more of Airi was fun and to see their meeting again was brilliant. This was a great look into what they were doing while Satoru was in a coma and when he was facing the criminal. This was a great companion piece to the series, so fun and enjoyable. This story was so worth the read.

i’m glad this was made with the time slip in erased we miss out on a lot in order to keep the main plot going but it is really nice to hear the stories of some of the supporting cast and all of it is really strong since the supporting cast is a group of really compelling characters kenya and sachiko’s chapters were my favorites seeing kenya’s determination and how much satoru impacted him and sachiko’s diary throughout her chapter man she is such a good mom such a well thought out series very glad i read it
Not so much as a conclusive ending as I'd hoped but....I still loved reading how the other characters were taking in the events. Kenya's section was especially interesting, which is probably why he got two chapters. His mom was just....amazing and Airi's seemed....weird to me. Just the same as the original manga where they see each other and thats it. Guess we are to assume Satoru and her become friends again or more. Definitely a good addition to have for anyone whos read Erased.
This was cute. Nothing to add to the main story. Just a little fluff. We get to see some backstory about a few key characters. Giving them even more depth. As well as seeing what they did after the tragedy that happened. How they dealt with it and learned to move forward. It was a nice read and gave a lot more of an understanding to some of these characters. Which I really enjoyed. Definitely worth the read if you enjoyed the main series.
