A father in Hell, a dead lover, and a demon gangster on her tail. Today is the best day of Tazia’s life.
Demons are taking savage control of the disillusioned and down-at-heel. Half-vampire, Tazia, wants no part in it. She’s embracing her first taste of freedom in one hundred and fifty years. But liberty doesn’t come easily. When her celebrations are interrupted by a psychopathic angel, she is forced into a distasteful alliance to save the demon who was once her jailer.
Assisted by her best friend, a sex-addicted technomancer called Billy, she struggles to free herself from the angel’s evil plan. No easy task, when faced with resistance from a demonic terrorist, and pursued by her ex-lover—a human mercenary now out for her blood. If she fails, will Tazia ever regain her freedom or will she be forced back into a life of tortuous incarceration?
Scratching in the Dirt is the first in the Written by Birds trilogy, and is an adult urban fantasy novel set on the streets of modern-day Turin, London, and Detroit. It treads lightly in the darkness, with not a small amount of blood and gritty humor. Just ask the birds.
It takes a lot of skill to take a tired concept (in this case demons/vampires/etc) and craft a story that's truly enjoyable. I might have said it was impossible to do so, until I read Scratching in the Dirt. There was just something about this book that pulled me and kept me turning the pages. I really dug Tazia's whole character, BAMF to the max. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait for what's to come.
This is the first book in the Written By Birds series. It's a well written but bit of a different take on the whole vampire/demon/angel thing. At times, you forget there is even a paranormal aspect to the story. We get glimpses of what's to come but we don't get the full story just yet. I'm thinking the "big picture" will be revealed in coming books. 18 + for language, violence and sex (though not overly graphic).
An unexpected gem of a hook! I got this first of a series free through Bookbub or something like that. Anyway, as from prior experience, I didn't expect much. I was so pleasantly surprised!
Anastasia is a half-vamp assassin with a soul on lockdown in the middle of a dystopian world overrun by demons. She's only just gotten free of her cruel demon father to find out she has to rescue him in his afterlife. Not only that, but she's on the run from her unkillable ex-lover Soren, who comes after her like the terminator. Or does he? The story is complex and twisty, with a rather shocking ending. Can't wait to read the next in the series!
Tazia is the mc i'm not very far into the book. it's already different then i thought it would be. it's kinda boring hopefully it pick ups. right now i want to put DNF on it and come back to it later. just wasn't' feeling it.
