Empire of Shadows

Empire of Shadows opens with Anasofiya, Finn and Aidrik’s search for Finn’s grandfather’s house in the Scottish highlands. They are desperate to find shelter in time for Ana to give birth. Finn’s strong connection with nature is growing rapidly, thanks to Aidrik and finally, with some assistance, they find the house in a clearing in the forest. Limited by the fact Empyrean blood causes babies to grow rapidly and, as in a few weeks the child’s appearance will be that of a young man, this was their only option.

They stay for nearly three months as Ana recovers and the now adolescent Aleksandr continues developing.

The narrative alternates between several groups ~ Nicolas and those family members at Ophélie ~ Finn, Ana and Aidrik with Agripin and the Empyrean Senetat ~ and Amelia and Jacob in Ireland.

As Ophélie is being readied to house and educate as many Empyrean children as possible, Nicolas is feeling inhibited by events. Knowing he will follow through with his commitment doesn’t make things any easier, being responsible for others is completely out of his comfort zone and he struggles with unfamiliar emotions. The Deschanels, and Oz, are all involved in the project and have their individual tasks. The uncertainty of what is to come and the unpredictability of how long much longer Ophélie will stay under the Empyreans’ radar is affecting them all.

The threat of the Eldre Senetat hangs over Aidrik, Finn, Ana and Aleksandr. As Aidrik appeals to Agripin, the son of the Empyrean emperor, for help, Amelia and Jacob begin to learn about their destiny and past connections. Shocking events in Ireland take them to the edge and beyond. All the family members need to use their enhanced resources like never before. Lives are on the line.

Empire of Shadows weaves together storylines, past and present, and a lot of questions are answered, even as more arise, in a turbulent and highly charged narrative. The situations the characters find themselves in are dangerous and challenging in the extreme and the parallel storylines keep the fast paced narrative flying along, tragic and terrible as it unfolds.

The relationships and characters, and there are lots both new and old, are detailed and defined and considerably more developed. The writing and plot line are incredibly imaginative and involved. The continuation of the druid storyline and Amelia and Jacob’s story is one of my favourites and the mythology aspect is an added bonus. A fascinating continuation of the saga.

Myths of Midwinter

Lauren Weatherly is given the task of supervising Quillan Sullivan’s work, or rather the lack of it, at Sullivan and Associates, the family’s law firm. Quillan doesn’t want to waste time working when he can spend it enjoying himself. Although he doesn’t yet realise it, Quillan has a rare gift which, coupled with his feelings for Estella Broussard, who loathes him but will use him for her own ends, land him in serious danger.

At Ophélie there is a search party looking for the missing refugee children, Nicolas needs to take Mercy to Colleen in New Orleans and Finn is desperate to find Ana. Together with Aleksandr, Nerys, Anne, his brother Jon and of course, Forbia Finn begins the long and dangerous journey to rescue Anasofiya. Finn has not yet forgiven Jon and is against his involvement. Although Nerys is keeping a secret despite her promise to Finn, she explains to him that Aleksei is the son of the prophecy and his birth was foretold thousands of years ago.

Continuing the saga of the House of Crimson and Clover this is definitely not a stand alone read. The story is told from various points of view and even being one who has followed from the beginning, it took me a little while to bring to mind all the previous plot lines and settle into this instalment. When I did though, it drew me in completely and the multiple storylines blended together nicely. I’m glad Jon has reappeared and seems to want to make amends. I loved the inclusion of Riley, Quillan’s twin, and their interaction and relationship. The paranormal aspect is always in evident in some form, but the elements go that much deeper and more sinister in this story.

The attention to detail, complexity and obviously deep research is impressive to say the least. The story is extremely imaginative and innovative and I always enjoy the mythology references. Wonderful storytelling and a blockbuster of a series.

The Hinterland Veil

Nicolas is desperate to find a way to help Mercy, and worried for her state of mind, after her death and resurrection as a human. He needs to get her away but isn’t sure where to go, until he speaks to Oz, who gives Nicolas an idea. He persuades Mercy to take a trip and they fly to Glasgow then travel on to Portree, on the Isle of Skye with no idea what awaits them.

Finn, Aleksandr, Jon and Anne, searching for Anasofiya, are with the Quinlans in Ireland. Finn has agreed to train with Padraig, controlling and utilising his abilities, to help find Amelia and Jacob, which will aid his search for Ana. The training is a struggle, until he has a breakthrough and finds himself able to time travel.

Aleksandr is finding out more about himself, his destiny and the extent of his power, as well as falling in love. Meanwhile Anasofiya, Cyler and Agrippin are dealing with their individual struggles.

There are a lot of characters with expanding, yet connected, storylines, in this intricate and involved saga. As it develops and unfolds, each volume deals mainly with specific and differing groups. The storyline is complex, so detailed with incredible and totally unexpected twists. I love Finn, Ana and Aleksandr and the relationship between them. All the characters are extremely well defined and have evolved enormously. An amazing series.

What a treat to have three of Sarah Cradit's House of Crimson and Clover books bundled together. This series is phenomenal!

Empire of Shadows by Sarah Cradit continues the epic tale of the House of Crimson and Clover.

This full length novel is not a stand-alone read. There are an increasing number of characters in this series. In fact, the author provides extensive timeline and family trees at the end of Empire of Shadows. The plot of this novel is quite complex. There are three major story lines each told from the perspective of multiple characters. While the stories don't converge per se, they will eventually come together as Sarah Cradit's human and fantasy worlds collide.

As her fans have come to expect, Ms. Cradit has developed detailed characters and painted rich scenes. She has done quite a bit of research on mythology and folklore, and Ms. Cradit has woven in some lovely tidbits of Irish folklore into Empire of Shadows.

Fans of House or Crimson and Clover are sure to revel in the continuing tale of the Deschanels, the Sullivans, and the growing number of Empryrians!

Myths of Midwinter is part of The House of Crimson and Clover series by Sarah Cradit. It cannot be read as a stand alone novel. In fact, even followers of the series might need to check the family tree, time line and character encyclopedia in the appendix of this book.

Myths of Midwinter is told from multiple points of view. I would say there are three discernible storylines in this book; within each story line there are multiple narrators. At first, it felt a bit choppy, but as I remembered details from prior books, the story started to flow better for me. The plot is evenly paced, and Ms. Cradit has built in a strong sense of foreboding and tension into this installment of her series. The series is very detailed, and Myths of Midwinter increases the complexity of the series dramatically.

The cast of Deschanels and Sullivans in the series continues to expand. In addition to new family members, some previously known family members discover hidden powers and paranormal skills. I loved the addition of Lauren Weatherly; she’s a young attorney working at the Sullivan law offices. I see the potential for another love triangle in the future of The House of Crimson and Clover!

Cradit has masterfully created a fantasy world for her stories to take place. Most of the series to date has taken place in the world as we readers know it, and in it, Cradit has embedded an intriguing mix of paranormal capabilities, the occult, Irish mythology, and history. The details about a couple cemeteries in Louisiana adds a little spark to the touristy cemetery tour hosted by some of the Broussard family. It is clear that Cradit puts a lot of time into researching everything she adds to her stories; the occult artifacts, etc. such as the charms/ruins found by Quillan, and the big-reveal letter found by Estella. Cradit then takes that research and weaves rich dynastic worlds in which her necromancers, starlight awakeners, time shapers and humans interact.

The Hinterland Veil by Sarah Cradit is the 17th installment in her House of Crimson and Clover series. As with her prior books, this latest installment does not disappoint--4.5 stars from me.

Cradit has created a detailed fantasy world that coexists with the world as we mortals know it. Her characters are detailed, developed and continually growing in their role in the The House of Crimson series and Clover. Cradit’s series installments alternate between lagniappes, where she creates the background for existing characters or introduces new characters, and novels where the story progresses. The House of Crimson and Clover grows more detailed, broad, and complex with each installment.

Hinterland continues the story of the Deschanels, Sullivans and the Empyreans and the threat of war and destruction. Agripin, Cyler, and Anasophia continue their power struggle. Finn continues to search for his soulmate, Ana. Their relationship/story has been my absolute favorite of the entire series. From their first meeting in The Storm and The Darkness, you could feel they were destined to be together. Their son, Aleksandr, struggles with discovering the extent of his power as well as his destiny as part of the prophecy. Nicolas and Mercy are on their own journey, and it will eventually bring them back to the epic battle between these two worlds. Then there is the sibling rivalry between Agripin and Oriana…actually, the family politics abound on both fronts!

The worlds in The House of Crimson and Clover are filled with possibilities. There is magic, time travel, other realms and paranormal beings. The ancient, powerful beings and humans alike struggle with family, power, and love. The Hinterland Veil ends not with cliff hangers but many loose threads that will eventually be woven into subsequent installments of Cradit’s epic saga.

While a few of the lagniappes can be read as standalone novellas for readers who just want a taste of Cradit’s creative writing style, to follow and enjoy The House of Crimson and Clover series, the books must be read in order. You cannot skip around or pick up the series in the middle. This series is so broad and complex that even though I have read every book in this series, I still need to refer to the family trees, time lines and definitions in the books’ appendices.

This review is one for each of the 3 books in the set.
Book 5 Empire of Shadows
The Deschanel clan is back with a vengance. As usual they're all set for whatever comes their way. I have to admit 700 pages was a bit overwhelming, but I'm glad I stuck it out because this was by far the best book in the series. We meet new characters and catch up with some of the old, some we love and some we love to hate. All I can say without spoilers is this book will blow you out of the water. So many things have happened, some happy and some devastating. Ms. Cradit you've done it again but this time with a giant OMG!! Thank you for giving me the honor of reading your book. 5 stars can't don't this story justice and neither can this review.

Book 6 Myths of Mid Winter
This series just keeps getting better and better. I can't believe that Jon is back and wanting to change. He's decided to help Fin, Aleksandr and Anna find Ana and along the way find his self again.
Estella Bouussard is back from school in France and looking for a necromancer so she can emass power.
Quillan Sullivan is a necromancer but he doesn't know it and he's in love with Estella. She uses him once she finds out what he is and even though she's a royal bitch to him be thinks he can eventually win her love if he does what she wants.
Katja thinks she's finally figured out what she needs to do to end the curse. But can she bring herself to do what she believes is necessary to end it all?
These stories just keep getting better and better. I'm HOOKED! I read them as fast as Ms Cradit sends them to me and I impatiently wait the next. I'm dying to know what's going on with everyone. Will the curse be broken eventually, can Fin find Ana, is Jon ever going to be normal again? Can the prophecy be fulfilled? I have lots more questions that I hope Sarah will answer eventually.

Book 7 The Hinderland Veil
I love that the gaps in the history between the Dechanels and the Emperians are being filled in more with each story. Ana is still being held hostage but will she realize embracing the dark power within her can allow her to escape? Aleksei and his father Finn are still searching for Ana while Padraig helps Finn learn to harness who and what he is. Aleksei is turning into such a major character, his maturity level is amazing but I love how he can still be a child sometimes. Nic oh Nic I love you but I hate you, you are such a selfish S O B but you can also be so loving and loyal. When Nic finally realise he truly loves Mercy I was so happy but with h being so self centered for so long I'm afraid its to little to late. There are so many characters finally embracing who and what they are its awesome. I love this series and have been hooked from book one, I can't wait to see where it goes from here.

Myths of Winter - I am really loving this series. I happened upon Sarah from a book give-a-way and I have been unable to put down the series. I love how she continues to bring it all together weaving a wonderful tale that is hard to put down. I can't wait to see what happens as the fulfillment of the prophecy approaches. Will Finn find Ana? Will Jacob and Amelia return? What will happen with the twins? Each book just gets better and better. What's next?

Empire of Shadows - I think I have said it before but Sarah shows herself to be a masterful story teller. That is shown by how she weaves this story and wows you with every page. The range of emotions and depth of the characters will grab you as you speed thru the book unable to pace yourself. Just when you think you have it all figured out something else goes down and you are wondering what could possibly happen next. This is a series you wont put down until the last page of the last book when you can finally take a breath!

Hinterland Veil - I don't know how she does it but this is another solid home run for Cradit and the House of Crimson & Clover series. From page one you are once again racing thru the pages to see what happens next. Such a AMAZING weaving of a story that keeps you struggling to keep your emotions in check while Cradit draws them out and spills them across the pages. You can't help but become invested in every step that is taken thru her written words. I love this series and can't wait to see what the next book entails. This is a true journey that you will absolutely love.

This boxed set contains books V-VII in The House of Crimson & Clover series. If you haven't ready any of these, you should. Sarah M. Cradit has a gift for storytelling. I foresee fame in her future.
Empire of Shadows is my favorite book thus far in the series. There is love, danger, betrayal, and friendship. Most of all, there is phenomenal story telling.
Myths of Midwinter is an amazing read. I laughed, cried, got really angry, and rejoiced with the Deschanels and the Sullivans. I can't wait to join them on the remainder of their journey.
The Hinterland Veil is another wonderful story. I don't know how she does it, but she does it every time. Cradit has created another literary masterpiece. I anxiously await more of the characters I have grown to love.

who would have thought I love fantasy?

This series has been a real blessing in a year of pretty sh*tty circumstances world wide. I loved the personal view points of the characters, their depth & storylines. Each member of this family completely individual & interesting.

I loved how their stories were woven together but individual stories in their own right, I loved the fierce women & the matriarch who looked to her sisters for support & wisdom more than the men & this is what underpinned the strength of the family I think.

The House of Crimson & Clover - Vol IX-XII

So many characters, so many story lines and no end in sight. My favorite characters are Finn and Ana. These stories are filled with magic, denial, deception, evilness, violence, supernatural powers, honor, respect, trust, healing, faithfulness and love.
I enjoyed the stories and hope to buy the next books in the near future.

Witches with twists

Interesting characters. The author left the stories for each group of characters enough to expand on further. I'm ready to start the next one!

EMPIRE OF SHADOWS

Floved this one. It was stunningly written.

It was literally nail biting. I was on the edge on my seat. So much going on but easy to follow. From one disaster to the next. Pure genius.

More abilities discovered through all the devastation. The emotions speaking out. Jacob and Amelia on the road to self discovery, realising they are both a major part on things to come. Ana going supernova when her evigbonds life is cruelly taken. And.....John returns...wth!!

It really did captivate me!

MYTHS OF MIDWINTER

I am speechless. What can you say about a book that keeps on amazing you, without giving away spoilers? When i put my kindle down, i want to pick it straight back up to get to the bottom of all the craziness. It is seriously mind boggling. Sarah has one amazingly creative imagination and the way she writes is pure gold. The twists and turns in this series, its quite frankly incredible. Every single page has one aspect that keeps your mind reeling. All i know is that i an eager to get to the bottom of this and i do not think my mind will settle until it all comes together. Will they ever truely know peace? Just wow.

HINTERLAND VEIL

Ahh, still totally amazing.

Ana is incredible when she goes Super Nova. She is now a force to be reckoned with. Through all the turmoil, she is still amazing. It will be interesting to see what happens with her and Jon. Also Jon and Anne. Has he really changed? Lets hope so.

Will Mercy get her baby? Soooo many questions. So i am keeping it short and sweet because i need to read the rest haha
