I seem to have been the first person to read/review this title on goodreads, so I will leave a detailed review for the curious. It is a strange and uneven hodge-podge. Perhaps of interest to the Hilaire Belloc completist?
Contents:
Hilaire Belloc and the Counter-Revolution by Douglas Jerrold
"The hour of the counter-revolution has not struck. And its issue is, therefore, not yet determined." Still waiting 77 years later. Not holding my breath. 1 Star
The Man Who Tried to Convert the Pope by R.A. Knox
Spoiler: it was George Townsend, D.D., Canon of Durham on a tour of Italy in 1850. I love Ronald Knox. So disappointed by this essay. 1 Star
On Newman, Chesterton, and Exorbitance by Douglas Woodruff
Very interesting and readable essay. 5 Stars
Alpine Mysticism and "Cold Philosophy" by Arnold Lunn
H. Belloc quote was most interesting part of this essay, which generously, should have been trimmed from 17 to less than 3 pages. 2 Stars
The Piety of Cicely, Duchess of York: A Study in Late Medieval Culture
For the student writing a master's thesis on Cicely, Duchess of York, (whoever she was?), this essay might be solid gold. For the rest of us? No. 0 Stars
The Meaning of Anthony Trollope by Christopher Hollis
Never read Trollope, don't intend to. But still, this was a well-written and captivating essay. 4 Stars
Byzantium to Oxford by Gervase Mathew, O.P.
I believe the shortest essay in this book, but still much longer than my attention span on this subject: Volumes contained in the Oxford library which physically traveled there via Byzantium. 1 Star
The Library at Naworth by David Mathew
Even for the student writing a master's thesis on Lord William Howard, (whoever he was?), this essay would probably be useless because the student would have access to all the source material used in this Essay. For the rest of us? No. 0 Stars
Andre Chenier by J.B. Morton
Who was apparently a French Poet. No. 1 Star in case I missed something
The Pre-Conquest Saints of Canterbury by W.A. Pantin
Mostly their names. A lot of names. 1 Star
The Myth of Arthur by David Jones
Did you know there was a myth of Arthur, king of the Britons? There was. 1 Star for the quotes contained in the essay by other authors
