The Four Points

Rate this book
First time being called pretty…first crush…first flutter of anticipation for a first kiss… first boy to kill himself inches from her lips.

In the Four Points we enter the world of a young teenage outsider and her struggle to be accepted-her struggle to accept herself. But ERIKA is far from a regular teen. Erika hears people's thoughts. She has blackout spells, waking up in places with no idea of how she got there...and strange, inexplicable things keep happening around her.

On the first day of 11th grade, Erika is compelled to intervene during a mass shooting at her high school. She is reluctantly propelled into the spotlight. A series of strangers start to enter her life...all connected by an odd symbol-a DIAMOND containing two eyes-a symbol similar to the birthmark on the back of Erika's neck. One of these strangers is a gorgeous young man named LIAM, who shares the very same marking. Erika will soon find out that she and Liam are, in fact, at the center of a worldwide struggle between the forces of good and evil. They are part of a secret society of "Diamonds" compelled to protect the world. And Erika is the "Western Point".

As the battle heats up between the forces of good and evil, Erika's instinct to push people away will be tested when she falls for Liam. Erika struggles to face the demons within her, the fear of being abandoned again. Erika must choose between the risky path of love and the familiar call of the Collector-a sinister, seductive immortal. Will Erika learn to trust? Will she ever feel worthy of Liam's love? Or will she let her insecurities, her fears, destroy the world?

I actually heard this book on Facebook. It was announced and I knew I had to check it out. I started reading it the next day. I quickly became hooked and was up far too late. There was just something absolutely addicting about it. It started off with a school shooting and that hit a little close to home since I was in high school in Colorado during the Columbine shooting so I found I wanted to hear more. I just couldn't stop reading after that scene. It just touched part of my soul that needed it at this moment in time to make me remember.

My favorite character was Erika. There was times I just wanted to scream at her and there were times that I just wanted to wrap her in my arms to keep her safe. She is a deep and a complex character that won't quickly leave me. She is a little sassy but more importantly she is extremely grounded and easy to relate to. Of course I also just adored Sofia. She is a pot of sass wrapped in a super model body. Something that was small but I found it added quite a bit to closeness of the Points was their choice of meals. I really enjoyed the fact that everyone got to choose a course. It shows the diversity of where all the characters came from. I also really enjoyed Mr Blithe. He is their own personal Giles.

My favorite scene was from the beginning during the school shooting. The emotions it brought out of me was strong and I found myself crying in the bathtub at midnight. It was such a emotional and pivotal point in the story. It was the beginning of a adventure. My second favorite scene was the boys showing off their strengths. It was great because it showed that these characters are just young adults off to save the world. It was such a innocent and fun moment.

I would recommend this book to anyone that is looking for a fast paced, adventure driven and sassy YA book. It has a diverse cast and a unique plot. It was just so different than your usual paranormal ya book. I will be gifting this to a few friends who will really enjoy it.

This book is so awesome! I started reading it in the afternoon and have to stop halfway because I need to sleep. BUT! I couldn't sleep because my mind was taken by the story. So, I kept reading till I finished it. My heart was practically racing while reading the book-not just because of excitement but also because of all the emotions I felt while reading. It really felt like I was part of this world. Liam, one of the main characters, was like one of my "love at first read"! I couldn't say more without spilling the beans. So I better spot it 'till this point before I do.

This is an excellent story. Sometimes it's hard knowing where you fit in life. Finding out that you have a larger destiny can be a blessing and a curse. Having the strength to follow that destiny is the biggest challenge of all. The story will take you on a journey where past and present collide and it's up to the Four Points to save the world from darkness. I hope this turns into a series, because I can't wait to know what comes next!

I had trouble putting this book down. It catches your interest from the beginning and holds it the whole way through the book. You have reincarnated souls, learning to control and use powers, choices to be made, learning to accept oneself.

Amazing

This is an amazing book by a first time author. The book is very well written, researched, edited and formatted. I have to say as a practicing Hindu this is the first time I have come across an author who portrayed Hindu beliefs in a proper way instead of making a mockery out of it to suit their purposes. She has researched things properly instead of using cheap, half truth documents from the internet.
This book has everything in it which is romance, action, adventure, old Hindu beliefs, urban setting, self doubting and loathing high school girl. The book also throws light on a very important and sad reality of school shoot outs.
I couldn't understand why Erika's mom made her daughter feel so bad and encouraged low self esteem instead of encouraging her daughter. She had a ton of problems and she passed it on her daughter. Erika for most of the time in the book frustrated me and angered me because of her ability to push people away and zero self esteem. How can someone be so week and with zero self esteem is beyond me. Even when her life was getting better and she saw proof of her power, she couldn't accept it. Rest everyone like Sofia, Jayson and Liam were amazing. Liam who is the most understanding boyfriend is pushed away many times still he didn't give up on Erika.
All in all a very great read. Give it a try.

The Four Points brings you Erika, a talented young girl growing up in a less than stellar home. Her mother is a pretty awful person and yet Erika still treats her amazingly well. Even when her mother essentially pimps her out to newsstations so they can "buy a new home", Erika goes right along with it. I understand she has low self esteem, from her home life and kids at school, but there has to be a point in which she draws the line at her mother's abuse. She's not completely aware just how strong she is. In an incident that tears the school apart, Erika gets noticed. Now she has the opportunity to leave home and explore her talents and where she fits into this new world.
This book was good and engaging, I found it often repetitive with the names (rather than using she/he), and Erika's disbelief that there was more to her than she knew was very off-putting. She can read minds, but any suggestion that she can do more is met with utter disbelief. I really dislike the fact the book ended on a cliff hanger, and that's it's been a year since it's been released with no follow-up book. It's a good book for a debut novel which just needs a bit of polishing to make it a great book.

At the best of times I really don't care for YA or romance but I liked the idea of "secret societies" and frankly was drawn to the fact that the first paragraph of the synopsis says the protagonists first crush kills himself (call me morbid) so I thought I would give it a try. Frankly it's an ok enough book that I finished it but I find my eyes becoming overworked as they are constantly rolling. The "love" story between Erika and Liam is weirdly unrealistic I think the term these days is instalove, in fact the other love story between Erika and another person (trying to make it spoiler freeish) felt more authentic because it had a backstory and a more realistic reason for being there then merely a man's chiseled chest, chiseled jaw and chiseled arms (I hope you don't mind the word chiseled because it's J.J. Melvin' s favorite word).

I really like the faux Hindu folklore background of the story it was a unique concept to me and was well thought out in fact I'm more excited about the next book 'The Story of Adhira and Erebus: The Beginning'.

Erika is a loner at her school. One day a boy tells her she is pretty and she should stay out of the quad. Well she can't resist going where she is told she shouldn't be and gets in the middle of two boys shooting up the school. After the shooting she is taken to a hospital where some people visit her and ask questions about "abilities" she has. Turns out she is point who is supposed to protect people. So she is transported to Oxford to train with other points. All in all not a bad book, the school shooting was a bit disturbing as these are happening too often. I can't say I'm dying to find out more, but I did enjoy reading this one.

A surprising, exciting read from a debut author. The perfect mix of reality and fantasy with lots of action, suspense and emotional turmoil had me turning pages well into the night. I am looking forward to the next story.

I would have never guessed this was JJ Melvin's 1st novel. It was very well written and took me on an emotional roller coaster that I didn't want to end. I was completely annoyed by Erika's insecurities and trust issues to the point I would yell at the book but then I would remember she was still a teenager. This book was fast paced and consistent making me not want to put it down. I love that this story does not have cookie cutter characters, plot or happily ever after ending. It is fresh and new and exciting. JJ Melvin is definitely a one-click Author to me now!

This story follows Erika, an 11th grader who hear peoples thoughts, as strangers with a bizarre symbol begin popping up in her life after she intervenes in a school shooting. Once Erika meets Liam, more comes to light about the secret society that the symbol belongs to and Erika learns that she is the “Western Point” and that she must decide what part to play in a battle between good and evil.

This story was amazing from start to finish. It is an edge of your seat fantasy adventure. The secret society that is portrayed is fleshed out well and Erika is perfectly portrayed. Erika feels like a teenager as reading the book in the way of her insecurities, but the author wrote her in a way that she isn’t edging on annoying. Erika just feels real. The only con is that the love story between Erika and Liam felt like it was forced and just added as an afterthought in some places.

Overall this book presents an interesting concept of secret societies and good and evil and the execution is near flawless. The characters are well described, and the character development is amazing. I would recommend this book, however, if you are the type of person that hates forced romance those parts of the book would annoy you. I would say to skip the romance parts if that’s the case because the story contained within is so much more than the love story.

For being the first book published by this author it is so well written. I really enjoyed it. Found it really hard to put down. It is in the YA genre but you could have fooled me with that rating on it. It is a book that can be read and enjoyed at any age. This story is about a girl who even at a really young age realized she was different than other people. She finds out just how different when there is a traumatic event that happens at her school. From there her real journey starts. You will have to get this book to find out more. So worth the read. Can't wait for more. And yes the ending to this one makes you want to throw things. I am hoping the author doesn't make me wait long for more!
